The document summarizes the FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) model presented by Dr. Barbara B. Tillett. The FRBR model conceptualizes catalog records as entities and relationships between works, expressions, manifestations and items. It aims to improve user tasks like finding and identifying related resources by collocating different versions of works. The document outlines the FRBR entities and relationships and provides examples to illustrate how they can be applied in an "FRBR-ized" online catalog display.

Identities in Displacement: Difference and Dislocations in Multi-Ethnic Literatures and Cultures (MELUS)
“African flowers are not meant for parlors,” says the Arabic character Dar in the Edmund Greville’s film, Princess Tam-Tam. This line expresses the conference theme of displacement and dislocation better than any other in the film. The year was 1935 and the famed dancer Josephine Baker lived as a displaced person, one who self-exiled to France in order to escape the racist ways of life in the United States. The film Princess Tam-Tam features Baker’s character Alwina as one who is displaced from her poor home life to that of her rich, white benefactor, Coton.
Previously written as a seminar paper, this presentation will go further by examining how difference and dislocation functioned in a post war world. By drawing on the Orientalism work of the late Edward Said, I will suggest that session participants consider Baker’s defiant and heroic acts as ways to represent herself and counteract media attempts to monopolize her talents. Critics can read the film as a text about subversion and subtle resistance disguised in various motifs throughout the mis-en-scene. By showing brief clips, I will provide conference-goers the opportunity to judge the significance of Baker’s role and the message she was trying to send as an actress in exile and a social activist. If Baker is the African flower, what were the ‘parlors’ surrounding her? How is African culture represented in the film? More importantly, how does Baker shape her individual identity and her identity as a transnational African-American? It will be interesting to re-view this film for its artistic beauty and its messages about displacement. Finally, I hope to add to the quiet conversation about Josephine Baker’s work which one might say is twice displaced. As scholars, we can situate and re-locate Baker and find significance in her legacy.

From Record-Bound to Boundless: FRBR, Linked Data and New Possibilities for S...NASIG
As resources have become ever more complicated in a digital world, it is evident that cataloging practices and the metadata standards we use to guide these practices are becoming more constrained. Nowhere is this more apparent than with the cataloging of serial publications. For librarians, serial publications have been a constant challenge due to issues such as the multiple version problem, frequent changes in title or issuing body and complex publication histories. For users, serial publications are challenging due to the fact that a boundary has been established in the library profession where serial publications are described by librarians while the articles contained within those publications are handled by indexing and abstracting services. Although web-scale discovery systems have attempted to bridge the gap by providing a single point of discovery, user access is far from seamless. Recent changes within the library community can have a significant impact on serials cataloging and may help improve information retrieval for the end user. The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) holds great promise for alleviating some of the problems related to serials cataloging. While FRBR provides a useful mechanism for re-examining many of the problems with serials cataloging, the principles of Linked Data may further transform the way in which resources and the relationships between them are captured and presented to our users. By taking description out of our current record constraints, serials librarians will better be able to express how a particular journal has changed over time and the relationships between multiple versions of the same publication. The Linked Data model also opens up many opportunities for the provision of value-added content to bibliographic descriptions. Shifting description to a Linked Data model may not only help to alleviate many of the issues related to serials cataloging, it can also help users better understand and use bibliographic data effectively.

Editor's Notes
Abstract: The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) is a conceptual model of the bibliographic universe, describing the entities in that universe, their attributes, and relationships among the entities. Additionally, the FRBR report identifies specific user tasks, reinforcing the traditional objectives of library catalogs for finding and collocating materials. These concepts are important for us to communicate with other information communities in the global environment as we together build systems to find, identify, select, and obtain materials. This presentation covers the basics of FRBR and indicates its influence on activities in cataloguing code developments worldwide. ------------------------- I am very pleased to have this opportunity to share with you the conceptual model presented in the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records - the entities, relationships, and attributes from that model and to describe how it is currently affecting work on the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and the extension of the model into the area of authority control. I was a consultant along with Tom Delsey, Elaine Svenonius, and later Beth Dulabahn of the Library of Congress in developing the conceptual model within IFLA, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.
