The document summarizes several agricultural revolutions that have occurred in India: the Blue Revolution in fisheries led by Dr. Arun Krishnan, the Pink Revolution in meat production led by Durgesh Patel, the Silver Revolution in egg production led by Indira Gandhi, and the White Revolution in milk production led by Dr. Varghese Kurien. It then provides details about Operation Flood, the dairy development program established in 1970 that transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to the world's largest milk producer through cooperative societies linking rural milk producers to urban consumers.
Crop-livestock integration and intensificationICRISAT
The synergies between different farming enterprises ensure food and nutritional security, increase income, reduce risk and increase resilience.Integrated systems improve the input/output ratios of water, land, labor and other inputs.Integration of crops and livestock, specifically goats and groundnuts & mucuna have immense positive impact on women and children!
The fisheries and livestock sectors are two major pillars of Bangladesh’s economy, and more than 10 million people directly depend on these sectors for their livelihoods. These sectors are also important for food, nutrition, income, export earning, draft power, biofertilizer, and transport. The fisheries
sector is vibrant, contributing to about 20 percent of the agri- cultural GDP, while the livestock sector contribution is around 12 percent. These two sectors provide the major dietary protein. During 1994−2005 the food from animal origin increased from 76 to 113 gm per capita per day. About 63 percent of animal protein supply in the diet of the people of Bangladesh is obtained from fish.

Many developing countries still have a significant quantity of land available that is well adapted to rain-fed crops – about as much as now is being farmed (over 1.7 billion acres). These lands do not include areas inhabited by human beings, forests, or protected areas.
If a country can produce and export biofuels, it will have a stronger economy and more resources to address the needs of the poor.
Africa, with its significant sugar cane/Cassava production potential, is often cited as a region that could profit from experience and technology, although obstacles to realizing it (infrastructure, institutional, etc.) should not be underestimated.

The Indian economy is growing at the rate of 6 to 8 percent per annum. The livestock industry in India is the second largest contributor to gross domestic product (GDP), after agriculture, and accounts for 9 percent of the total. Consumption is likely to increase as follows: per capita milk from 240 to 450 g per year; per capita eggs from 40 to 100 per year; and per capita broiler meat from 1 000 to 2 000 g per year.

Smart Food crops are highly nutritious and targeting some of the largest micro nutrient deficiencies and needs, especially of women and children. Pearl millet has very high levels and bioavailability studies have shown that they will provide the average person’s daily requirement of iron and zinc. Smart Food allows us to have Sustainable Diets ie diets with low environmental impacts which contribute to food and nutrition security.
This Thematic Paper is part of a Toolkit for Project Design (Livestock Thematic Papers: Tools for Project Design) which reflects IFAD’s commitment to developing a sustainable livestock sector in which poor farmers and herders might have higher incomes, and better access to assets, services, technologies and markets.
The paper indents to be a practical tool for development practitioners, project designers and policymakers to define appropriate livestock development interventions. It also provides recommendations on critical issues for rural development and also possible responses and actions to encourage the socio-economic empowerment of poor livestock keepers.

Sustainability in the Dairy Sector: Nutritional, Environmental and Socio-Economic Empowerment
“Produce Milk, Drink Milk, Build Healthy Nation”
Sustainable Agriculture is an integrated system of plant & animal production practices that…….
Satisfy human food and fiber needs;
Enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends
Make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources & on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls
Sustain the economic viability of farm operations; and
Enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole

Ensure scientific management, considering the weather cycle
ADVANTAGES
6. Environmental & social issues
Degradation & loss of natural coastal resources
Local waters & sp. May also become contaminated with antibiotics,

Accumulation of organic matter leading to eutrophication
Exposure of coastal area to erosion, flooding, storm damage

20. SRI.LAL BAHADUR SASTRI visited ANAND on 31st October 1964.
as a result of visit NDDB established dairy development programme
known as OPERATION FLOOD
Link rural milk producer s to urban milk consumers through cooperative societies
This transformed India from a milk deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer
21. • Dr.VARGHESE KURIEN is known as father of white revolution, for his idea operation flood
• OPERATION FLOOD has made the country self sufficient in milk & milk products
through modernization of our dairy industry
• He founded around 30 institutions of excellence(AMUL,GCMMF,NDDB) which is
owned &managed by farmers and run by professionals
• Kurien was responsible for the creation & success of AMUL brand of dairy products
22. PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION
Operation flood was implemented in three phases:
PHASE-1 (1970-80)
• Financed by the sale of skimmed milk powder and butter oil donated
by the European union through the world food programme.
• Mother dairies were setup in Delhi , Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
22
23. PHASE-2 (1980-85)
• Increased milk sheds from 18-136.
• By the end of 1985 , 43000 village cooperatives and 42,50,000 milk producers were covered.
• Domestic milk powder production increased from 22,000 tons -1,40,000 tons by 1989.
• Direct marketing of milk by cooperatives increased by several million litres per day.
23
PHASE-3 (1985-96)
• Expansion and strengthening of infrastructure.
• Veterinary first aid, health care services , feed for animals were improved .
• Emphasis on research and development in :
Animal health-example: vaccine for theileriosis.
Animal nutrition-example : protein rich feeds, etc.
25. The Amul Model
The Amul Model of dairy
development is a three-
tiered structure with the
dairy cooperative
societies at the village
level federated under a
milk union at the district
level and a federation of
member unions at the
state level.
