HAHNEMANN: A MULTIFACETED MAN
OF HUMANISTIC MEDICINE
‘Hahnemann was so far ahead of his
time that his teaching, in its higher
phases, could not be fully
understood until science in its slower
advance had elucidated and
corroborated the facts upon which he
based it’
…………Stuart Close in his work
The Genius of Homeopathy
Professor Dr. Riecke in a dedicatory speech (1833)
expressed himself forcibly in discussing Materia Medica :
‘In this matter we stand on a pinnacle of homoeopathy.
Whoever has at all realised the wretched state of Materia
Medica, whoever has regarded it as a medical romance, will
be glad to appreciate the significance of a meritorious effort
to give it a better foundation. Nobody before Hahnemann
completed the investigation of medicinal potencies by
experiments on healthy subject in such scientific manner….’
FATHER OF EXPERIMENTAL
PHARMACOLOGY
Hahnemann "possessed an extraordinary
understanding for the nervous and mental activities of
his patients…and [possibly] considered psycho-
therapy in certain cases to be more important, more
applicable than the use of homeopathic medicines,"
[R. Haehl, vol.1, 272-3]

PSYCHO-SOMATIC MEDICINE
EMERGING FIELD OF PSYCHO-NEURO-IMMUNOLOGY
Hahnemann "recommended the use of fresh
air, bed rest, proper diet, sunshine, public
hygiene and numerous other beneficial
measures at a time when many other
physicians considered them of no value.
Samuel Hahnemann (1792), The Friend of
Health
Pioneer of modern public health
AND sanitation measures
Hahnemann in 1830 discussed the role of
micro-organisms in the transmission of
disease in his article, "Cause and
Prevention of the Asiatic Cholera" in
which he refers to the "excessively minute,
invisible, living creatures, so inimical to
human life."
PROPONENT OF
CONTAGIOUS NATURE
OF DISEASE
"...only a very small quantity of the thyroid secretion stands
between intelligence and idiocy.
It is a gruesome thought to realize that the absence of one
chemical in such miniscule quantity can result in a failure of
development of the mind and body of an individual.”
The Glands of Destiny, Cobb, I. G

Drs. P. Bellavite and A. Signorini’s
For as two things are required for the production of
these as well as all other morbid alterations in the
health of man - to wit, the inherent power of the
influencing substance, and the capability of the vital
force that animates the organism to be influenced
by it…………….
(§ 117 of Organon of medicine-6th edition)
PROPOGATOR OF
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL
TRIAD OF CAUSATION
Arndt Schulz Law confirms
Hahnemann‘s biphasic action of
medicine, that is, the inversion of the
effectiveness of a medicine as a
function of the dose.(§ 62-66)
PIONEER OF BIPHASIC
ACTION OF MEDICINE
‘Only in the most urgent cases, where danger to life and
imminent death allow no time for the action of a homœopathic
remedy - not hours, sometimes not even quarter-hours, and
scarcely minutes - in sudden accidents occurring to previously
healthy individuals - for example, ………. from lightening,
from suffocation, freezing, drowning, etc. - is it admissible and
judicious, at all events as a preliminary measure to stimulate
the physical life with a palliative (medicines for symptomatic
relief).
HAHNEMANN
APPRECIATED SCOPE OF
ALLOPATHY IN EMERGENCY
MEDICINE (§ 67 FN)
APPRECIATION OF SURGERY BY
HAHNEMANN(§ 186)
For in the case of injuries accruing to the body from without, if
they be at all severe,…..the treatment of such diseases is
relegated to surgery; …….. in so far as the affected parts
require mechanical aid,……….. , may be removed by
mechanical means, e.g., by the reduction of dislocations, by
needles and bandages to bring together the lips of wounds, by
mechanical pressure to still the flow of blood from open
arteries, by the extraction of foreign bodies that have
penetrated into the living parts, by making an opening into a
cavity of the body in order to remove an irritating substance
or to procure the evacuation of effusions or collections of
fluids, by bringing into apposition the broken extremities of a
fractured bone and retaining them in exact contact by an
appropriate bandage,
HAHNEMANN’S INSIGHT INTO
MATERIALISTIC AND DYNAMIC
COMPONENTS OF HUMAN BODY
The organism is indeed the material instrument of
the life, but it is not conceivable without the
animation imparted to it by the instinctively
perceiving and regulating vital force (just as the
vital force is not conceivable without the
organism), consequently the two together
constitute a unity, although in thought our mind
separates this unity into two distinct conceptions
for the sake of facilitating the comprehension of
it. (§ 15 )
BACTERIOLOGY IN LIGHT OF VITALISTIC
PHILOSOPHY
It is important to understand that Hahnemann's expressed views
on the role of micro- organisms in the transmission of certain
diseases in his article "Cause and Prevention of the Asiatic
Cholera”, which in no way contradicts his very strong and
clear statements that disease is transmitted in a purely
dynamic way.
Micro-organisms,like all living organisms, include a dynamic
aspect without which they cannot exist; the material organism
and its dynamic presence form a unity (Aph.15). Therefore,
where they are involved in the transmission of disease, micro-
organisms act dynamically as well as having a material
BASIS OF PRESCRIBING:
CONCEPT OF ‘INDICATIONS’
‘If the physician clearly perceives what is to
be cured in diseases, that is to say, in
every individual case of disease
(knowledge of disease,
indication),………...’
§ 3 – Organon of the Art of Healing
EVOLUTIONARY
UNDERSTANDING OF DISEASE
(CONCEPT OF ANAMNESIS)
‘Useful to the physician in assisting him to cure are
the particulars of the most probable exciting cause of
the acute disease, as also the most significant points
in the whole history of the chronic disease, to
enable him to discover its fundamental cause, which
is generally due to a chronic miasm.’
§ 5 of Organon of the Art of Healing
MY CLINICALEXPERIENCES IN LIGHT OF HAHNEMANNIAN
WRITINGS
(EVIDENCE BASEDCASE STUDIES)
CLINICAL GEMS FROM WORKS OF HAHNEMANN
August Bier
CLINICAL GEMS FROM
ORGANON OF MEDICINE
CASE STUDY : a febrile child
A 6 yr. old child developed c/o fever with
very slight nasal discharge. During fever,
the child was overtly talkative as reported
by other. The sense of well being was
marked with low grade fever. Considering
the loquacity accompanying fever, I gave
the child Podophyllum 200, in dissolved
doses but with not much improvement.
CASE STUDY : a febrile child
The child continued to suffer from
low grade fever, complaining of
tiredness but with no localising
sign. The child gradually felt
increasing lack of energy and yet
there was no definite prescribing
clue.
§ 183 FOOTNOTE GIVES THE PRESCRIBINGCLUE
‘In cases where the patient (which, however,
happens excessively seldom in chronic, but not
infrequently in acute, diseases) feels very ill,
although his symptoms are very indistinct,
so that this state may be attributed more to the
benumbed state of the nerves, which does not
permit the patient’s pains and sufferings to be
distinctly perceived, this torpor of the internal
sensibility is removed by opium, and in its
secondary action the symptoms of the disease
The child was prescribed Opium in 30
potency with remarkable result and fever
came down within 4 hours of
administration of Opium.
PEARLS OF WISDOM IN INTRODUCTORY PART OF
ORGANON OF MEDICINE
 It is worthy of remark, that the morbid symptoms of
patients suffering from tapeworm are generally of such a
kind, that they are rapidly relieved (homoeopathically) by
the smallest dose of tincture of male-fern root; so that the
ill-health of the patient, which causes this parasitic animal
to be restless, is thereby for the time removed; the
tapeworm then feels at ease, and lives on quietly in the
excrement of the bowels, without particularly distressing the
patient or his intestines, until the antipsoric treatment is
so far advanced that the worm, after the eradication of the
psora, finds the contents of the bowels no longer suitable for
its support, and therefore spontaneously disappears, for ever
from the now cured patient, without the least purgative
medicine.
PREVENTIVE ASPECT OF MEDICINE
He is likewise a preserver of
health if he knows the things
that derange health and cause
disease, and how to remove
them from persons in health. (§
4)
PEARLS OF WISDOMFROM
The Chronic Diseases, their Peculiar
Nature and their Homœopathic Cure.
The dose of antipsoric medicine must not
be taken by females shortly before their
menses are expected, nor during their
flow; but the dose can be given, if
necessary, four days, i.e., about ninety-
six hours after the menses have set in.
HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT IN PREGNANCY
 Pregnancy in all its stages offers so little obstruction to
the antipsoric treatment, that this treatment is often
most necessary and useful in that condition. Most
necessary because the chronic ailments then are more
developed. In this state of woman, which is quite a
natural one, the symptoms of the internal psora are
often manifested most plainly on account of the
increased sensitiveness of the female body and spirit
while in this state; the antipsoric medicine therefore
acts more definitely and perceptibly during
pregnancy………….
CLINICAL TIPS
FROM MATERIA
MEDICA PURA
MAGNETIS POLUS
AUSTRALIS
Symptom no. 274 in Materia Medica Pura
Sore pain in the inner side of the nail of the
big toe, in the flesh, as if the nail had
grown into the flesh on the side, very
painful on being even slightly touched (aft.
8 h.).
MANGANUM ACETICUM:
AMELIORATION BY LYING DOWN
Symptom no 210: Deep cough, without
expectoration, all day, which ceased when lying
down returned the following day with tenacious
mucus expectoration,& pain as of a concussion in
the scrobiculus cordis & chest, but went off
quickly at noon. [L.Rkt. ]
Symptom no 279 :On rising up from bed, in the
evening, a severe burning over the skin of the
whole body, which went off on lying down again
in bed. (aft 8 h.)
MANGANUM ACETICUM:
AMELIORATION BY LYING DOWN
 Symptom no 91: Toothache of a horrible kind :it darts
suddenly into two somewhat decayed molars opposite to
one another-more in the upper-where the pain is then
indescribable, thence it goes occasionally into the arm, the
zygoma, the throat or the ear,& again returns to the teeth,
with complete prostration of the strength- he can scarcely
walk, he must lie down, with extraordinary internal
uneasiness & oppression; by a few mouthfuls of coffee the
pain when at its height, was momentarily removed, but
after a minute recurred with all its former violence- with
rather dialated pupils; it was somewhat elastic, or by
laying the forehead on the table, but it was much
aggravated by sitting upright. [Stf. ]
ARNICA MONTANA:
INTRODUCTION IN MATERIA MEDICA PURA
‘In some kinds of
FALSE
PLEURISY,
however, it is very
efficacious, in
such, namely,
whose symptoms
correspond to
those of this root’
WEEPING JUST
BEFORE OR
WITH COUGH
FEAR OF BEING
TOUCHED
PERCEIVING ARNICA FROM MATERIA MEDICA PURA
On the side of the nape a pimple that causes shooting and
ulcerative pain when touched.
(This kind of pimple, so painful when touched, with an
inflamed red areola, which arnica produces specifically,
bears the greatest resemblance to the well-known boils
(furunculi), and consequently these are homoeopathically
cured by arnica, and in persons who are frequently
troubled with them are prevented by the use of arnica,
and their future occurrence warded off, as experience has
taught me.) (aft. 48 h.).
He wrote to his friend Dr. Stapf, “Be
as sparing as possible with your
praises. I do not like them, I feel
that I am only an honest,
straightforward man who does not
more than his duty.”
HUMILITY PERSONIFIED
HAHNEMANN:
STAMPING CLINICAL
PRACTISE WITH TEACHINGS
OF THE MASTER
‘.your honor to me in deeds is manyfold more
worthy than honor bestowed by many in
words……..My faith in you stems not only in the
earnest efforts with which you follow the words in
spirit, but also your ability to enlarge upon their
clinical application for suffering humanity. ….
The generations of physicians shall respect you for
this.’
Extract from letter to Boenninghausen
Samuel Hahnemann, his Life and Work.
REMEMBERING
HAHNEMANN
For all his lifelong
hardwork, constant
endeavours for the
benefit of suffering
humanity; it has been
very rightly engraved for
him.

REVISITING HAHNEMANN

  • 1. REVISITING HAHNEMANN THROUGH HIS WORKS AND HIS PRINCIPLES
  • 2. PRESENTATION BY: DR. BIPIN JETHANI READER (NFSG)/ ASSOC. PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF ORGANON OF MEDICINE NEHRU HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICAL COLLEGE, GOVT. OF NCT OF DELHI E-mail: drbipin.jethani@gmail.com #9868396623
  • 3. HAHNEMANN: A MULTIFACETED MAN OF HUMANISTIC MEDICINE ‘Hahnemann was so far ahead of his time that his teaching, in its higher phases, could not be fully understood until science in its slower advance had elucidated and corroborated the facts upon which he based it’ …………Stuart Close in his work The Genius of Homeopathy
  • 4. Professor Dr. Riecke in a dedicatory speech (1833) expressed himself forcibly in discussing Materia Medica : ‘In this matter we stand on a pinnacle of homoeopathy. Whoever has at all realised the wretched state of Materia Medica, whoever has regarded it as a medical romance, will be glad to appreciate the significance of a meritorious effort to give it a better foundation. Nobody before Hahnemann completed the investigation of medicinal potencies by experiments on healthy subject in such scientific manner….’ FATHER OF EXPERIMENTAL PHARMACOLOGY
  • 5. Hahnemann "possessed an extraordinary understanding for the nervous and mental activities of his patients…and [possibly] considered psycho- therapy in certain cases to be more important, more applicable than the use of homeopathic medicines," [R. Haehl, vol.1, 272-3] PIONEER OF PSYCHO-SOMATIC MEDICINE
  • 6. CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE RE-AFFIRMS PSYCHO-SOMATIC MEDICINE EMERGING FIELD OF PSYCHO-NEURO-IMMUNOLOGY
  • 7. Hahnemann "recommended the use of fresh air, bed rest, proper diet, sunshine, public hygiene and numerous other beneficial measures at a time when many other physicians considered them of no value. Samuel Hahnemann (1792), The Friend of Health Pioneer of modern public health AND sanitation measures
  • 8. Hahnemann in 1830 discussed the role of micro-organisms in the transmission of disease in his article, "Cause and Prevention of the Asiatic Cholera" in which he refers to the "excessively minute, invisible, living creatures, so inimical to human life." PROPONENT OF CONTAGIOUS NATURE OF DISEASE
  • 9. "...only a very small quantity of the thyroid secretion stands between intelligence and idiocy. It is a gruesome thought to realize that the absence of one chemical in such miniscule quantity can result in a failure of development of the mind and body of an individual.” The Glands of Destiny, Cobb, I. G VISIONARY CONCEPT OF MINUMUM
  • 10. ACCEPTANCE OF SMALL DOSES IN ALLOPATHIC SYSTEM Interleukin 1, an important part of our immune system, has been found to exhibit increased T-cell clone proliferation at 1019. Chemicals in the brain called beta-endorphins are known to modulate natural killer cell activity in dilutions of 1018. Emerging Science of Homeopathy: Complexity, Biodynamics, and Nanopharmacology Drs. P. Bellavite and A. Signorini’s
  • 11. For as two things are required for the production of these as well as all other morbid alterations in the health of man - to wit, the inherent power of the influencing substance, and the capability of the vital force that animates the organism to be influenced by it……………. (§ 117 of Organon of medicine-6th edition) PROPOGATOR OF EPIDEMIOLOGICAL TRIAD OF CAUSATION
  • 12. Arndt Schulz Law confirms Hahnemann‘s biphasic action of medicine, that is, the inversion of the effectiveness of a medicine as a function of the dose.(§ 62-66) PIONEER OF BIPHASIC ACTION OF MEDICINE
  • 13. ‘Only in the most urgent cases, where danger to life and imminent death allow no time for the action of a homœopathic remedy - not hours, sometimes not even quarter-hours, and scarcely minutes - in sudden accidents occurring to previously healthy individuals - for example, ………. from lightening, from suffocation, freezing, drowning, etc. - is it admissible and judicious, at all events as a preliminary measure to stimulate the physical life with a palliative (medicines for symptomatic relief). HAHNEMANN APPRECIATED SCOPE OF ALLOPATHY IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE (§ 67 FN)
  • 14. APPRECIATION OF SURGERY BY HAHNEMANN(§ 186) For in the case of injuries accruing to the body from without, if they be at all severe,…..the treatment of such diseases is relegated to surgery; …….. in so far as the affected parts require mechanical aid,……….. , may be removed by mechanical means, e.g., by the reduction of dislocations, by needles and bandages to bring together the lips of wounds, by mechanical pressure to still the flow of blood from open arteries, by the extraction of foreign bodies that have penetrated into the living parts, by making an opening into a cavity of the body in order to remove an irritating substance or to procure the evacuation of effusions or collections of fluids, by bringing into apposition the broken extremities of a fractured bone and retaining them in exact contact by an appropriate bandage,
  • 15. HAHNEMANN’S INSIGHT INTO MATERIALISTIC AND DYNAMIC COMPONENTS OF HUMAN BODY The organism is indeed the material instrument of the life, but it is not conceivable without the animation imparted to it by the instinctively perceiving and regulating vital force (just as the vital force is not conceivable without the organism), consequently the two together constitute a unity, although in thought our mind separates this unity into two distinct conceptions for the sake of facilitating the comprehension of it. (§ 15 )
  • 16. BACTERIOLOGY IN LIGHT OF VITALISTIC PHILOSOPHY It is important to understand that Hahnemann's expressed views on the role of micro- organisms in the transmission of certain diseases in his article "Cause and Prevention of the Asiatic Cholera”, which in no way contradicts his very strong and clear statements that disease is transmitted in a purely dynamic way. Micro-organisms,like all living organisms, include a dynamic aspect without which they cannot exist; the material organism and its dynamic presence form a unity (Aph.15). Therefore, where they are involved in the transmission of disease, micro- organisms act dynamically as well as having a material
  • 17. BASIS OF PRESCRIBING: CONCEPT OF ‘INDICATIONS’ ‘If the physician clearly perceives what is to be cured in diseases, that is to say, in every individual case of disease (knowledge of disease, indication),………...’ § 3 – Organon of the Art of Healing
  • 18. EVOLUTIONARY UNDERSTANDING OF DISEASE (CONCEPT OF ANAMNESIS) ‘Useful to the physician in assisting him to cure are the particulars of the most probable exciting cause of the acute disease, as also the most significant points in the whole history of the chronic disease, to enable him to discover its fundamental cause, which is generally due to a chronic miasm.’ § 5 of Organon of the Art of Healing
  • 19. MY CLINICALEXPERIENCES IN LIGHT OF HAHNEMANNIAN WRITINGS (EVIDENCE BASEDCASE STUDIES)
  • 20. CLINICAL GEMS FROM WORKS OF HAHNEMANN
  • 21. August Bier CLINICAL GEMS FROM ORGANON OF MEDICINE
  • 22. CASE STUDY : a febrile child A 6 yr. old child developed c/o fever with very slight nasal discharge. During fever, the child was overtly talkative as reported by other. The sense of well being was marked with low grade fever. Considering the loquacity accompanying fever, I gave the child Podophyllum 200, in dissolved doses but with not much improvement.
  • 23. CASE STUDY : a febrile child The child continued to suffer from low grade fever, complaining of tiredness but with no localising sign. The child gradually felt increasing lack of energy and yet there was no definite prescribing clue.
  • 24. § 183 FOOTNOTE GIVES THE PRESCRIBINGCLUE ‘In cases where the patient (which, however, happens excessively seldom in chronic, but not infrequently in acute, diseases) feels very ill, although his symptoms are very indistinct, so that this state may be attributed more to the benumbed state of the nerves, which does not permit the patient’s pains and sufferings to be distinctly perceived, this torpor of the internal sensibility is removed by opium, and in its secondary action the symptoms of the disease
  • 25. The child was prescribed Opium in 30 potency with remarkable result and fever came down within 4 hours of administration of Opium.
  • 26. PEARLS OF WISDOM IN INTRODUCTORY PART OF ORGANON OF MEDICINE  It is worthy of remark, that the morbid symptoms of patients suffering from tapeworm are generally of such a kind, that they are rapidly relieved (homoeopathically) by the smallest dose of tincture of male-fern root; so that the ill-health of the patient, which causes this parasitic animal to be restless, is thereby for the time removed; the tapeworm then feels at ease, and lives on quietly in the excrement of the bowels, without particularly distressing the patient or his intestines, until the antipsoric treatment is so far advanced that the worm, after the eradication of the psora, finds the contents of the bowels no longer suitable for its support, and therefore spontaneously disappears, for ever from the now cured patient, without the least purgative medicine.
  • 27. PREVENTIVE ASPECT OF MEDICINE He is likewise a preserver of health if he knows the things that derange health and cause disease, and how to remove them from persons in health. (§ 4)
  • 28. PEARLS OF WISDOMFROM The Chronic Diseases, their Peculiar Nature and their Homœopathic Cure. The dose of antipsoric medicine must not be taken by females shortly before their menses are expected, nor during their flow; but the dose can be given, if necessary, four days, i.e., about ninety- six hours after the menses have set in.
  • 29. HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT IN PREGNANCY  Pregnancy in all its stages offers so little obstruction to the antipsoric treatment, that this treatment is often most necessary and useful in that condition. Most necessary because the chronic ailments then are more developed. In this state of woman, which is quite a natural one, the symptoms of the internal psora are often manifested most plainly on account of the increased sensitiveness of the female body and spirit while in this state; the antipsoric medicine therefore acts more definitely and perceptibly during pregnancy………….
  • 31. MAGNETIS POLUS AUSTRALIS Symptom no. 274 in Materia Medica Pura Sore pain in the inner side of the nail of the big toe, in the flesh, as if the nail had grown into the flesh on the side, very painful on being even slightly touched (aft. 8 h.).
  • 32. MANGANUM ACETICUM: AMELIORATION BY LYING DOWN Symptom no 210: Deep cough, without expectoration, all day, which ceased when lying down returned the following day with tenacious mucus expectoration,& pain as of a concussion in the scrobiculus cordis & chest, but went off quickly at noon. [L.Rkt. ] Symptom no 279 :On rising up from bed, in the evening, a severe burning over the skin of the whole body, which went off on lying down again in bed. (aft 8 h.)
  • 33. MANGANUM ACETICUM: AMELIORATION BY LYING DOWN  Symptom no 91: Toothache of a horrible kind :it darts suddenly into two somewhat decayed molars opposite to one another-more in the upper-where the pain is then indescribable, thence it goes occasionally into the arm, the zygoma, the throat or the ear,& again returns to the teeth, with complete prostration of the strength- he can scarcely walk, he must lie down, with extraordinary internal uneasiness & oppression; by a few mouthfuls of coffee the pain when at its height, was momentarily removed, but after a minute recurred with all its former violence- with rather dialated pupils; it was somewhat elastic, or by laying the forehead on the table, but it was much aggravated by sitting upright. [Stf. ]
  • 34. ARNICA MONTANA: INTRODUCTION IN MATERIA MEDICA PURA ‘In some kinds of FALSE PLEURISY, however, it is very efficacious, in such, namely, whose symptoms correspond to those of this root’ WEEPING JUST BEFORE OR WITH COUGH FEAR OF BEING TOUCHED
  • 35. PERCEIVING ARNICA FROM MATERIA MEDICA PURA On the side of the nape a pimple that causes shooting and ulcerative pain when touched. (This kind of pimple, so painful when touched, with an inflamed red areola, which arnica produces specifically, bears the greatest resemblance to the well-known boils (furunculi), and consequently these are homoeopathically cured by arnica, and in persons who are frequently troubled with them are prevented by the use of arnica, and their future occurrence warded off, as experience has taught me.) (aft. 48 h.).
  • 36. He wrote to his friend Dr. Stapf, “Be as sparing as possible with your praises. I do not like them, I feel that I am only an honest, straightforward man who does not more than his duty.” HUMILITY PERSONIFIED
  • 37. HAHNEMANN: STAMPING CLINICAL PRACTISE WITH TEACHINGS OF THE MASTER ‘.your honor to me in deeds is manyfold more worthy than honor bestowed by many in words……..My faith in you stems not only in the earnest efforts with which you follow the words in spirit, but also your ability to enlarge upon their clinical application for suffering humanity. …. The generations of physicians shall respect you for this.’ Extract from letter to Boenninghausen Samuel Hahnemann, his Life and Work.
  • 38. REMEMBERING HAHNEMANN For all his lifelong hardwork, constant endeavours for the benefit of suffering humanity; it has been very rightly engraved for him. NON INUTILIS VIXI
