This survey was conducted with 20 university students in Ceuta, Spain to evaluate their English language abilities and preparation for the B1 certification exam. The majority of respondents were women between 18-25 studying subjects like business administration. While nearly all students recognized the importance of B1 certification, only about half had taken the exam. Most found speaking the most difficult and reading the easiest. Students reported needing 1-3 months to prepare, and had difficulties with listening and reading comprehension. Few engaged in leisure English activities to improve. In conclusion, students were not sufficiently prepared for B1 certification and relied on academies to strengthen their English skills, particularly speaking.
1. REVIEW OF THE SURVEY
Nowadays, the importance of acquiring a new language has increased
considerably. Therefore, all educational institutions put all their effort and commitment
to get their students to acquire a foreign language.
This learning is structured in levels, depending on the ability of reading, writing,
speaking and ability to list the main ideas of an audio. These are the levels (A1, A2, B1,
B2, C1, C2), and to move from one level to another these skills increase in difficulty and
skill
.Foreign language par excellence choicest for this type of instruction is English,
since by popular opinion is the most used.
In order to be able to determine the degree of knowledge in the foreign language
that the students have, in this case the university students, we have carried out a survey.
This survey has been proposed to university students attending the University of
Granada, in the Campus of Ceuta. And we try to know if they value the importance of
having a foreign language, which they consider more important, and within this, in which
language field they have more difficulty, or otherwise, it is easier.
This survey has been presented to different students, which will be classified by
gender, the degree they are studying, and their age.
From this first division we will observe the answers to questions as to whether or
not they have level B1, if the answer is yes, how many times they have taken the exam,
and how much time they have dedicated to their preparation.
RESULTS OF THE SURVEY
This survey has been carried out by 20 people, of whom 52.9% are women, and
47.1% are men.
2. The people in that sample of students are between 18 and 25 years old. Because
they are students, they spend all of their time only for studies and nobody of them is
working right now.
UGR Campus Ceuta offers a diversity of degrees and in our survey participate
students of all of them. When we analyse the data we may note that the majority of
students are from ADE department, 9 of 20 people, followed by Primary School
Education students, 5 of 20 people. Nursing department students get the third place with
4 of 20 people, and the smallest part of the sample are the students of Social Education
department, 2 of 20 people.
In addition, we found that 94.7% of the students surveyed knew the importance
of acquiring the B1 certificate. Also, 52.6% of the students had the opportunity to take
the test.
On the other hand, the part of the test that they consider more difficult is the
speaking and the easiest part is the reading. Also, we have observed that respondents think
that the average time to prepare this type of exams is between 1 and 3 months.
We try to find out the ability of the students in terms of the necessary skills in
learning a foreign language. Regarding listening and reading the majority of respondents
42.1% and 68.4% respectively, were not able to understand everything they heard or read,
but were able to extract the main ideas. And as for speaking and writing they are virtually
all able to carry it out properly.
Finally, we wanted to know if the students were doing any activity to improve
their level of English in leisure time, so we asked if they read a book or see some series
or film in English. This is an action that is recommended, because you learn the language
but in a more playful way, most of the participants in the survey did not carry it out.
3. In conclusion, the knowledge and learning of a foreign language is really
important, and within the university this importance becomes essential. This is known to
all, but through this survey we have been able to verify that the students are not
sufficiently prepared to acquire the B1 of any foreign language, in this case English, and
make use of the academies to improve in this field. When we learn a new language, as a
rule, the most complicated aspect is speaking, because we do not have the level necessary
to start a conversation. That's why respondents are aware of the preparation and time they
need to achieve this level.
PERSONAL OPINION
From my point of view, I believe that the Working Group we have had has been
cooperative, we have performed in the field with ease, given that we understand very
well because we think the same way.
On the other hand, this type of work I think it is flattering to our future teaching,
since from my point of view, I've learned a lot about ICT and in addition I have also
developed my imagination when it comes to the blog and the poster.
In addition I have practiced the use of English through this work and I have
realized that getting the B1 is not only one title to get your degree, but is a language
which, thanks to him, you can communicate with people to know another culture that is
not yours, I also think that is a self-improvement because speaking English will allow
you to travel around the world and communicate with your about. You can enjoy your
travel since English is spoken on 5 continents, and avoid you stressful situations caused
by the language barrier.
In addition, English is a universal language, the language of international
communication, trade and finance.
