A high school freshman creates a fake social media account for the purpose of tricking
another student. The fake account is used to show romantic interest in the targeted
teen, and many deceptive techniques are used to make the targeted teen think that the
fake account actually belongs to a real person. The holder of the fake account
eventually reveals the trick, posting screenshots on a popular social media platform of
embarrassing texts and admissions by the targeted teen. A few days later, the targeted
teen waits for the cyberbully outside of school and physically attacks the cyberbully,
sending the cyberbully to the hospital. The parents of the cyberbully want to press
charges against the targeted teen.

Before the beginning of a school day, law enforcement arrest a 15-year-old student who
attends the local high school. Students, teachers, and even family members describe
the student as a “loner.” Some students do not even recognize the student, while others
are unaware of his name or refer to him in derogatory terms. The student does have a
small group of fellow students with whom he socializes sometimes during lunch, but it’s
unclear whether these are friendships outside of school. Teachers describe the student

The Crime
The New York City Police Department requested the assistance of the FBI after police detectives came to an apparent dead end in their investigation of the murder and mutilation of a twenty-six-year-old woman whose body was found on the roof of a Bronx public housing apartment building where she had lived with her parents. An investigative task force of twenty-six detectives and supervisors had interviewed more than 2,000 individuals, many of whom lived or worked in the apartment building. Record checks of known sex offenders in the area were of no assistance. The police had twenty-two “good” suspects but nothing conclusive.
A fifteen-year-old boy had discovered the victim’s wallet in the stairwell as he was leaving the building on his way to school. Upon returning home from school for lunch that afternoon, the boy had given the wallet to his father, who went to the victim’s apartment to return it. The victim’s mother then called the day care center where the victim worked to notify her daughter that her wallet had been found. At that time the victim’s mother was told her daughter had not shown up for work that morning. The mother, the victim’s sister, and a neighbor then proceeded to search the building and discovered the body. The body was located at 3:00 p.m.; the victim had left her apartment at approximately 6:15 a.m.
The victim was found nude. She had been beaten about the face and strangled with the strap of her purse. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation—first manual and then ligature. The victim’s jaw and nose had been broken, and several of her teeth were loose. She had sustained several other facial fractures. Her nipples had been cut off after death and placed on her chest. There were bite marks, which were determined to have occurred after death, on her thighs. Numerous contusions and lacerations were present on her body. “You can’t stop me” was written in ink on the inside of her thigh, and “Fuck you” was written on her abdomen. A necklace pendant she usually wore was missing and presumed taken by the killer. Her underpants had been placed on her head and pulled over her face. Her nylons had been removed and loosely tied around her wrists and ankles. Her earrings had been removed and placed symmetrically on each side of her head. An umbrella and writing pen had been forced into her vagina, and a hair comb had been placed in her pubic hair. Semen was recovered from the victim’s body; it appeared that the killer had stood over the victim and masturbated. Human feces were discovered on the roof landing and were covered with the victim’s clothing.

He remained out of the system from the age of 12 until the age of 18, when he was arrested for indecent exposure.
His IQ was recently assessed using the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI test) and estimated to be 70 (verbal IQ was 72 and performance IQ 73). His current communicative and daily living skills are equivalent to that of an eight-year old boy, and his socialization domain is equivalent to that of a seven-year-old. He has a reduced capacity to learn new information and to solve problems. He has a fourth-grade education and cannot read very well. He has not yet registered as a sex offender in the state. The PSIR recommended some form of cognitive-behavioral treatment.

A high school freshman creates a fake social media account for the purpose of tricking
another student. The fake account is used to show romantic interest in the targeted
teen, and many deceptive techniques are used to make the targeted teen think that the
fake account actually belongs to a real person. The holder of the fake account
eventually reveals the trick, posting screenshots on a popular social media platform of
embarrassing texts and admissions by the targeted teen. A few days later, the targeted
teen waits for the cyberbully outside of school and physically attacks the cyberbully,
sending the cyberbully to the hospital. The parents of the cyberbully want to press
charges against the targeted teen.
Week 3
Before the beginning of a school day, law enforcement arrest a 15-year-old student who
attends the local high school. Students, teachers, and even family members describe
the student as a “loner.” Some students do not even recognize the student, while others
are unaware of his name or refer to him in derogatory terms. The student does have a
small group of fellow students with whom he socializes sometimes during lunch, but it’s
unclear whether these are friendships outside of school. Teachers describe the student
as a good student but quiet. One of the student’s lunchtime acquaintances refers

A 15-year-old holds up a corner convenience store using a gun. Although the offender
threatened the clerk with the gun, no one was injured. The 15-year-old has no prior
record. The offender did run from police when he spotted them coming up the walk to
his house, but once apprehended, he did not resist arrest in any other way.

When booked into the local jail, John sliced his wrists with a razor and attempted to hang himself using a torn T-shirt. The cuts were superficial and the noose broke, causing John to fall to the floor and hit his head. He never lost consciousness. His defense attorney requested an evaluation for competency to stand trial and legal sanity. After a three-month treatment with psychotropic medication for depression, Doe was found competent to proceed to trial. The evaluation for legal sanity did not produce significant results. Jonas has been placed on probation for indecent sexual behavior
Jonas has been placed on probation for indecent sexual behavior with a five-year-old boy. This is his first felony offense, with two prior misdemeanor offenses as an adult—one count of indecent exposure and one count of misdemeanor theft. Jonas is now 20 years of age and lives with his maternal aunt, who was his guardian from when he was the age of 12 until he turned 18. Jonas has never been to prison.
Jonas suffered emotional and sexual abuse from his stepfather and mother for the first six years of his life, when he became known to Social Services investigating his case. This investigation resulted in his stepfather being charged with Indecency with a Child, and Jonas was placed in foster care. While in foster care over the next several years, Jonas was adjudicated numerous times for fire setting and cruelty to animals, for which he was finally sent to juvenile detention. While in detention at the age of 12, he tried to hurt himself and was removed to a padded cell for further assessment. Testing revealed that Jonas had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and was prescribed Ritalin. He remained out of the system from the age of 12 until the age of 18, when he was arrested for indecent exposure.
His IQ was recently assessed using the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI test) and estimated to be 70 (verbal IQ was 72 and performance IQ 73). His current communicative and daily living skills are equivalent to that of an eight-year old boy, and his socialization domain is equivalent to that of a seven-year-old. He has a reduced capacity to learn new information and to solve problems. He has a fourth-grade education and cannot read very well. He has not yet registered as a sex offender in the state. The PSIR recommended some form of cognitive-behavioral treatment.

Around 12:00 p.m. on September 13, 2004, Fred Smith walked across the road to Bill Jones's house to ask for a ride. Although it was almost fall, it was still very hot outside and Smith needed to pick up money in a neighboring town. Smith didn't want to walk from Centervale to Roan County, so he offered to pay Jones $20.00 for gas and his time to drive Smith to pick up his money. Jones accepted Smith's offer; however, Jones told Smith that he had to pick up a friend at a car repair shop along the way. Jones and Smith drove to Thrifty Repair Shop and picked up Jones's friend, Roger Fish. Fish was not in a hurry that day, so he agreed to ride with the pair to pick up Smith's money.
The trio arrived at 200 S. Railroad Street, Brysonton, Roan County, AnyState. Smith exited the car and told Jones and Fish to wait in the car. As Smith walked toward the front of the residence, he yelled to the occupants inside, "You got some weed?" "Yeah," Raynard Jenkins replied from inside the residence. Jenkins greeted Smith at the door and asked him, "What you got?" Smith pulled out a Ruger SP101 .357 Magnum and shot Jenkins in the chest at point-blank range.
As Jenkins was falling toward the ground, Bob Marshall, a local drug dealer, jumped up from the corner of the couch, dropped a large bag of cocaine on the floor, and ran into the kitchen and out the back door. Smith chased Marshall, shot at him twice, but missed him. Smith ran back to the car and yelled to Jones, "Punch it! He tried to smoke (kill) me." The group sped away in a brown Ford Taurus, but were pulled over by Deputy R. W. Dunn approximately five miles from the scene. After coming to a complete stop, Jones threw the gun onto the rear floorboard of the car, next to Fish.
Deputy Dunn approached the car, asked the men to exit the car, and detained them to await another officer's arrival. When the officer was brought to the location where the men were being detained, a witness who saw the shooting identified Jones as the shooter. Smith, Jones, and Fish were arrested, transported to the Roan County Sheriff's Office for additional questioning, and booked into jail on first-degree murder charges.

State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Special Agent (SA) Pete Moss arrived at the scene at 200 S. Railroad Street, Brysonton, Roan County, AnyState, with CSI and SBI SA April Pearson at 1:03 p.m. to assist the Sheriff's Office with investigating the murder of Jenkins and the attempted murder of Marshall. SA Pearson interviewed key witnesses who lived in the immediate area within proximity of the crime scene, while SA Moss began drafting a search warrant. Although the Sheriff's Office had secured the scene around the house, SA Pearson secured an additional larger area that extended into the street. Both the interior and exterior barriers were secured with crime.

- 1. A 12-year-old boy was caught in the act of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old female acquaintance by the victim's 16-year-old brother, who had arrived home and observed the juveniles in the act. The 12-year-old juvenile suspect, in addition to sexually assaulting the victim, had beaten her with the heel of a shoe that was nearby. The victim was almost unconscious when the police arrived. Following the incident, the juvenile was arrested and detained by local police on the following charges: Attempted sexual assault of a minor Aggravated assault Minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage Unlawful possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) The juvenile suspect was a latchkey kid, a child who returns from school to an empty home, from a single-parent home. His mother works from 2 p.m–11 p.m. Monday through Friday, so the juvenile is often alone for hours upon his return from school. After a preliminary examination, the juvenile suspect explained that the victim purchased the marijuana and the alcohol earlier that same day. The juvenile explained that the victim had invited him to her house because they had "been liking each other" for a long time. Further, the juvenile explained that the alcohol and drugs were in the home when he arrived. He said that he and the victim began by smoking marijuana and drinking beer before they began kissing and fondling one another. Next, according to the juvenile suspect, they started to have what he described as consensual sex. After a short while they were interrupted by the victim's brother, who had come home from work. The victim’s brother then called the police to report the incident. The juvenile had prior detentions for violation of curfew, truancy, and attempted sexual battery. No further explanations are given. Assignment:

Perspective of the state's attorney Make suggestions to the court on how the boy should be punished/sentenced. Perspective of the judge Based on the facts of the case and procedures of the juvenile justice system, what would be the most appropriate finding for the court? Social norms are a mix of informal—often unspoken—rules, guides, and standards of behavior. These nonlegal rules and obligations are followed and fulfilled in part because failure to do so brings upon the transgressor such social sanctions as induced feelings of guilt or shame, gossip, shunning, ostracism, and not infrequently, violence (O’Donnell, 2007). Some states include status offenders in the same category as juvenile delinquents. Other states place status offenders into the position of children, juveniles, or minors in need of supervision.
