Assignment: Gender Stereotyping
Gender stereotyping reflects the perceived psychological traits and characteristics of males and females, and the related roles that are thought to be appropriate for each gender in family, work, school, and society as a whole. Gender stereotyping impacts individuals in terms of how they view themselves and their place in society, as well as how society views the respective gender and the appropriate behavior and roles for each. The implications can be far reaching.
It is evident by studying history that gender stereotypes have changed over time. One obvious example is in the history of women's suffrage. It was believed in the U.S. that women were not sufficiently mentally astute to vote on the important issues impacting society. The belief was that a woman's place was in the home raising children and taking care of the domestic needs of the family. With women's suffrage in the early 20th century and the century that has followed, this stereotype has been changed. Not only do women vote but they hold every office at all levels including heads of state and presidencies across the globe. The 2016 presidential election even featured the first female nominee from a major political party.
As a foundation for the study of gender, this Application Assignment asks you to explore gender stereotypes in some depth, including a consideration of the numerous stereotypes for both men and women; how stereotypes differ by culture; and how stereotypes impact individuals of that gender, the opposite gender, and society as a whole.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review Chapter 3 of the course text,
Gender: Psychological Perspectives
, focusing on the definition of gender stereotyping, the impact it may have on society and individuals, and cultural differences and similarities in gender stereotyping. Remember that culture includes age, religion, sexual orientation, etc., as well as race and ethnicity.
Review the article, "Stereotypes as Dynamic Constructs: Women and Men of the Past, Present, and Future."
Review the article, "Bimbos and Rambos: The Cognitive Basis of Gender Stereotypes." Focus specifically on how the media perpetuates gender stereotyping.
Review the article, “Young and Older Adults' Gender Stereotype in Multitasking.” Focus on how this recent research suggests gender stereotyping is alive and well today.
Think about the following questions:
What are common stereotypes for men?
What are common stereotypes for women?
How have these stereotypes changed over time? What stereotypes have not really changed? Be sure to take into consideration different types of media such as film, TV, and literature as you prepare for this assignment.

Violence and the fear of violence are used to control women’s actions and bodies.Violence against women is produced at the intersections of race, class, and gender.Social institutions as well as individual men create and continue violence against women.Violence also occurs against others less powerful including children and those who cross gender boundaries.
Fraternities and Rape Culture (FF chap 42)According to the chapter, rapes occur frequently in fraternities (but not all fraternities) because the recruitment processes, structural characteristics, and treatment of women in fraternities produce a culture that accepts and promotes the sexual coercion of women.
The authors argue that most fraternities are deeply concerned with definitions of masculinity that are grounded in aggression, competition, and heterosexuality. Some fraternities try to recruit men who exhibit these stereotypically male characteristics.
Practices and structures in the fraternity such as the mistreatment of pledges, the focus on brotherhood, a concern about group loyalty, the use of alcohol, and the prevalence of violence and competition contribute to a rape culture.
The authors argue that women are treated as commodities by fraternities; they are used as bait (to attract recruits), as servers (filling men’s needs), and as sexual prey (conquest), and this can be found in the structural characteristics of fraternities (e.g., Little Sisters).
These characteristics not only contribute to the prevalence of rape, but they also make it highly unlikely that fraternity men can be adequately prosecuted for their crimes.
It is the fraternity as a group structure that contributes to the prevalence of rape in fraternities. According to the authors, fraternities must change dramatically before this can be stopped.

It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

If there is no discrepancy, or once the new shipment is received, unpacked, and cross-checked, Sharon stocks the shelves in the storage room and gives the supply bill to the clinic’s accountant, who ensures that the medical supplier receives payment.

Gender stereotyping reflects the perceived psychological traits and characteristics of males and females, and the related roles that are thought to be appropriate for each gender in family, work, school, and society as a whole. Gender stereotyping impacts individuals in terms of how they view themselves and their place in society, as well as how society views the respective gender and the appropriate behavior and roles for each. The implications can be far reaching.
It is evident by studying history that gender stereotypes have changed over time. One obvious example is in the history of women's suffrage. It was believed in the U.S. that women were not sufficiently mentally astute to vote on the important issues impacting society. The belief was that a woman's place was in the home raising children and taking care of the domestic needs of the family. With women's suffrage in the early 20th century and the century that has followed, this stereotype has been changed. Not only do women vote but they hold every office at all levels including heads of state and presidencies across the globe. The 2016 presidential election even featured the first female nominee from a major political party.
As a foundation for the study of gender, this Application Assignment asks you to explore gender stereotypes in some depth, including a consideration of the numerous stereotypes for both men and women; how stereotypes differ by culture; and how stereotypes impact individuals of that gender, the opposite gender, and society as a whole.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review Chapter 3 of the course text,
Gender: Psychological Perspectives
, focusing on the definition of gender stereotyping, the impact it may have on society and individuals, and cultural differences and similarities in gender stereotyping. Remember that culture includes age, religion, sexual orientation, etc., as well as race and ethnicity.
Review the article, "Stereotypes as Dynamic Constructs: Women and Men of the Past, Present, and Future."
Review the article, "Bimbos and Rambos: The Cognitive Basis of Gender Stereotypes." Focus specifically on how the media perpetuates gender stereotyping.
Review the article, “Young and Older Adults' Gender Stereotype in Multitasking.” Focus on how this recent research suggests gender stereotyping is alive and well today.

Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

When the clinic receives the shipment, Sharon unpacks the shipment and cross-checks the supplies that were shipped with the supplies that were ordered. If there is a discrepancy, the entire shipment must be returned to the medical supplier, who then rushes a new shipment to the clinic to be received the next day. If there is no discrepancy, or once the new shipment is received, unpacked, and cross-checked, Sharon stocks the shelves in the storage room and gives the supply bill to the clinic’s accountant, who ensures that the medical supplier receives payment.

I think this topic relates a lot to our discussion on what a “journalist” is and what sets them apart from pundits and bloggers, their obligation to present the truth. I can appreciate that Bella Stumbo chose to include the exact and direct quotes of Barry, accent and vernacular included. However, like all things there is a time, place, and reason. I believe that because Stumbo was writing a profile, she did the piece more justice by including the speech patterns. They show character and background in peripheral way. The rules for this week mentioned that grammatical mistakes should be used as they were spoken, but accents should not. There can be a fine line between those two. I’ve lived all over the world and I can tell you from experience, accents and vernacular combined can create something of a dialect. Regardless, we aren’t trying to be speech analysts, but writers. The audience and intention of the piece must always be considered. A running theme in the class has been to choose each word carefully, and if it doesn’t add to the story you don’t need it. For example, I found an article online that described Wendy Williams' reaction to a celebrity tryst:
‘It’s only been three weeks! And she’s 26! That’s old enough to understand—like, you don’t show your feelings on your sleeve in three weeks, you know? And he’s a 30-something.’
Here the writer is not only adding inflection or feeling by using multiple exclamation marks, but why add the “- li.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
