History of pipe fitting jobs
=====================
My experience in pipe is extensive, and includes major sites, smaller sites, small workshops, and
supervisory positions as well. These include:
2014 July (2 weeks) Tan Burrup, Karratha area. A Downers job, via Phillips Engineering.
Employed as a pipe fitter, from 2 to 12 inch pipe. The job was originally for 6- 9 months, but our
parent company Phillips, and all of its people, were laid off the site unexpectedly, as a cost cutting
procedure by Downers.

2014 May – June (6 weeks). at BOC Kwinana. A Civmec job, via Goldwest Enterprises. Employed
as a pipe fitter Installing new plant, worked on 3 to 16 inch pipe. This was for a short term 6 weeks
assignment, to help them catch up on a job that was behind time.
Supervisor Tim said “Try Civmec for a job. You should be a supervisor”

2010 June 10 – 2011 April. (11 months) Pluto LNG Plant, Karratha. An AGC job. Site of 4,500
men. Employed as a pipe fitter. My peers considered me to be the best pipe fitter they had on the
ETP part of the plant (100 people). I connected a whole module that was 3 stories high, basically
on my own. Nothing that was supplied would fit properly, and there were multiple serious mistakes
in drawings. The client’s engineers normally required mountains of paperwork for revisions, and
weeks of delays could be involved. Here, the client’s engineers had faith in me and my solutions.
They just walked away from it, and left it to me to sort it all out (6 months).
The piping supervisor said: “I love your work”. I like difficult work!!
Then I worked on piping around the main storage LNG tanks (4 months). Stayed until the end.

crane barge needing 50 men. 2 months as a pipe fitter – mechanical fitter - boilermaker for
Westralian Engineering. Stayed until the end.

2. My work was regularly praised by site supervisor Peter Gibson ( ‘Gibbo’), as an example to others,
for quality, accuracy, completeness, and full paperwork done. My welder (Colin Young) was
considered by some to be the best welder on the site. Together, we were known as ‘the 'A' team’.

2002 (6 months). Crusader Engineering: Employed as a pipe fitter building a timber treatment
plant
2001 (2 months). Glenbrook Steel: 2 months as a pipe fitter and flux core welder on the ‘Co-gen’
project for Robert Stones. Other time there was to a total of 6 months.
2000 (6 months). Western Engineering: Employed as a pipe-fitter and welder at Nuplex chemical
plant. Did a complete installation on my own, with design, construction, and pre-commisioning.
Tanks, pumps, stainless tubing to 2 inches.
1996 (1 month). Kiwi Dairy: Site of 300 (?) men. Employed as a pipe fitter welder, for stainless
tubing to 2”. Largest dairy factory in the world, ‘Powder 5’ makes a ton of milk powder per minute.
1995 (15 months). Pacific Steel. Rod Block Project. Employed as a pipe fitter and pipe welder,
mostly 2" to 8", some 16”. Time in total there was 7 years.
Reference: Gareth George. Sadly killed in an industrial accident there, 2 ton of steel carried by a
magnet crane dropped on 2 men, and killed both of them. He was a great guy.
1984 – 85 - 86 (26 months). Marsden Point Oil Refinery, Site of 4,500 men. I was a team leader of
15 men on the pre - commissioning crew. I also had time there as a pipe fitter (high pressure
stainless) on the main Hydro-Crackers. Also aligned 12'' pipe to the Hydrogen powered turbines,
with a required accuracy of 1 thousandth of an inch across the flange faces. Other guys took 3
days to do one, but I took only 6 to 10 hours, so got all the work. I did extensive pre
commissioning, with supervisory duties on gasket replacement, torqueing of bolt sets, airflow
testing, water flushing, and hydro testing, I took the main hydro-crackers up to pressure tests, etc
1984 (3 months). McKee Oilfield Production Station, New Plymouth: Site of 180 men. Site
Supervisor in charge of 65 men. This was built from the ground up, starting from major soil
removal from hillsides. A hectic pace had diggers, cranes, fitters, welders and sparkies all within a
2 meters of each other, all at the same time. My duties were to organize our crew’s daily
operations, and ensure that everything flowed in a timely manner, on a high pressure job.
1983-84 (18 months). Motonui Gas To Gasoline, New Plymouth. A synthetic petrol plant, first of its
type in the world. Site of 1,800 men. 18 months. My business (Walker Engineering Ltd) contracted
to CBI (Chicago Bridge and Iron) to do all the nozzles and man holes for all of their tanks – lots of
them. Also did lobster-backs and transition joints for Fletcher-Bestobell Ltd (2 months)
Other smaller jobs as well add up to a grand total of 12 years (hands on the tools, solid time) of
fitting pipe. 5 years of that has been in a supervisory position. I have worked on pipe from tubing,
to ½ inch, to 16 inch heavy wall, to 48 inch ducting. I have done extensive work with mild steel,
stainless steel, duplex steel, copper, PVC, polythene, rubber, GRP, but welds, socket welds,
screwed pipe,
I rate myself as a ‘number one pipe fitter’. I would be pleased for you to compare my knowledge,
and the standard of my work, with any other pipe fitter that you have ever employed.
I like difficult work. In fact, the harder it is, the better I like it.
I know what I am doing, and I have done lots of it.
3. My ‘people skills’ are also high, and I am easily able to teach others how to do better work. I have
taught about 50 people how to weld, or how to weld better. I have also taught about 30 people how
to fit pipe, or how to do it better.
Included in my 12 years as a pipe fitter, is 5 years of experience as a supervisor of pipe fitters.
I am happy to be a production pipe-fitter, a specialist for difficult work, a supervisor of other pipe
fitters, or maybe a ‘trouble shooter’. I love pipe, and I just love doing it. I am an asset to anyone
who employs me.
