  5. 5. <ul><li>Our School was created in 1977 as the National Baccalaureate Institute n# 3 to cover the educational necessities of the expansive nieghborhood of Gamonal. </li></ul><ul><li>In January of 1981, it was named I.E.S. Félix Rodriguez de la Fuente in memory of the famous citizen of Burgos who had died in March of the previous year in Alaska </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>We are not, then, a very old School; however, we have already reached a quarter century. In the year 2002, we celebrated our 25th anniversary with the organitation of several activities and the publication of a Investigation Book </li></ul>

Location <ul><li>The Natural Area of The Demanda Mountains is located in Castilla-Leon. </li></ul><ul><li>Castilla-Leon is the largest of Spain´s autonomous regions and one of the biggest regions in the European Union and one of the regions with the best natural resources </li></ul><ul><li>El espacio natural de la sierra de la Demanda se sitúa en Castilla y León (España). </li></ul><ul><li>Castilla y León es una se las regiones europeas con mayor riqueza natural. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Location <ul><li>Natural Area of The Demanda Mountains is located at the north-east of Castilla-Leon. </li></ul><ul><li>El espacio natural de La Sierra de la Demanda se encuentra en el noreste de nuestra comunidad </li></ul>
  12. 12. Location <ul><li>This Natural Area includes three mountain ranges, La Demanda, Neila and Mencilla over 2000 metres </li></ul><ul><li>Comprende tres núcleos montañosos: las sierras de la Demanda, Mencilla y Neila. </li></ul>

Geological heritage <ul><li>These mountains display numerous examples of glacial erosion, with cirques, lakes, morraines and U-shaped valleys </li></ul><ul><li>En la cumbres de estas sierras son muy interesantes las abundantes huellas de morrenas, circos y lagunas, dejadas por el glaciarismo cuaternario. </li></ul>Neila Lakes

These are in among oldest materials of Iberian Peninsula. </li></ul><ul><li>Los materiales geológicos predominantes –pizarras, esquistos y cuarcitas- están entre los más antiguos de la Península Ibérica. </li></ul>

Mesozoic fossils such as dinosaur´s bones, petrified wood and sea enviroment animals. </li></ul><ul><li>Además las rocas también presenta un abundante registro fósil de dinosaurios, árboles y animales de ambientes marinos. </li></ul>

Biological heritage <ul><li>The most surprising ecological features is its diversity of plants and animals, as a result of its geographical localitation as a transition zone between Atlantic and Mediterranean settings. The vegetation is extremely varied, with oak woodland, junipers, beechs, holly stands and Scots pine forest. Wildlife here includes deer, wolf, partridge … </li></ul><ul><li>En el entorno del espacio natural encontramos una gran variedad de bosques y de animales que nos hablan de su riqueza ecológica </li></ul>

Biological heritage <ul><li>A few cliff-nesting birds of prey, such as golden eagle, griffon vulture and egyptian vulture and an extremely varied range of forest and mountain birds. </li></ul><ul><li>En especial cabe destacar las aves que presenta una gran variedad de especies tales como Aguilucho Pálido (Circus cyaneus), Halcón Abejero (Pernis apivorus) y el Aguila Culebrera (Circaetus gallicus) </li></ul>

Cultural Heritage <ul><li>An area is invested with the status of Protected Natural Area in order to conserve both its natural heritage and traditional uses, culture and folklore that have shaped that patrimony. Involving local people in maintaining the area, improving their quality of life and, in short, ensuring sustainable use of natural resources, will help to preserve it for future generations </li></ul>

Cultural Heritage <ul><li>En esta comarca hay una gran riqueza cultural consecuencia de su poblamiento en la alta edad media que se manifiesta, hoy día, en sus monumentos, sus oficios, su gastronomia y sus romerias. </li></ul>In this area remains a great cultural richness due to the repopulation in the high middle ages. Today, we can appreciate it in their monuments, their gastronomy and their festivities.

Impact on the Natural Environment: Landscape <ul><li>The main problem of this natural area are eolic energy parks. </li></ul><ul><li>The wind machines have a negative effect on wild bird populations and they produce a visual impact on the landscape. </li></ul>Los principales peligros que afectan a este espacio son las instalaciones eólicas que afecta al paisaje y ponen en peligro las aves

Impact on the Natural Environment : Biodiversity <ul><li>La persecución y eliminación de especies consideras alimañas por atacar al ganado pero que son fundamentales para el equilibrio ecologico. </li></ul><ul><li>The persecution and elimination of animal species regarded as harmfull or dangerous for attacking cattle but are essential for the ecological balance. </li></ul><ul><li>The wolf is the best example of this problem. </li></ul>

Impact on the Natural Environment : “Culture” <ul><li>La desaparición de pueblos a consecuencia de la emigración o la construcción de pantanos que pone en peligro la persistencia de una cultura integrada con el medio. </li></ul>The disappearance of town due to emigration or the construction of dams that endanger the survival of a culture well-adjusted with the enviroment.

Propositions <ul><li>Throughout the next two school years we will attempt to give solutions to the presented problems from the last three slides. </li></ul><ul><li>We beleive that exchanging ideas among the different countries involved in this project on how to manage the environment, might bring up some answers that will help us to maintain our rich natural heritage. </li></ul><ul><li>A lo largo de los dos próximos cursos pretendemos dar soluciones a los problemas planteados en las tres últimas diapositivas. Creemos que, del intercambio de ideas en la gestión del medio que hacen los diferentes países que participan en el proyecto, podrán salir soluciones que nos ayuden a preservar nuestra riqueza natural. </li></ul>
