Towards a BIG Data Public Private PartnershipEdward Curry
Building an industrial community around Big Data in Europe is the priority of the BIG: Big Data Public Private Forum project. In this workshop we will present the work of the project including analysis of foundational Big Data research technologies, technology and strategy roadmaps to enable business to understand the potential of Big Data technologies, and the necessary collaboration and dissemination infrastructure to link technology suppliers, integrators and leading user organizations. BIG is working towards the definition and implementation of a clear strategy that tackles the necessary efforts in terms of Big Data research and innovation, while also providing a major boost for technology adoption and supporting actions for the successful implementation of the Big Data economy.
This publication describes some of the research highlights achieved in the focus areas of the Open Smart Spaces spearhead programme 2009–2012: interoperability, smartness, and natural interaction.
Interoperability between devices, software and other resources is essential for the emergence of smart spaces. The different levels of interoperability are discussed together with the importance of a common language for the devices. Semantic interoperability in resource limited devices is also elaborated and an implementation example is given. Context recognition has taken significant technical steps and matured from laboratory to real world applications during last couple of years. This development from recognising user’s physical activity – sitting, walking, running – to more elaborate life pattern analysis is discussed. Development of VTT Node, a wireless sensing and processing device bringing distributed intelligence into industrial condition monitoring is explained. An overview of how existing near field communication antennas and circuits can double for the purpose of wireless charging is given. Finally, the interesting possibilities given by augmented and mixed reality and 3D cameras are introduced.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Let's dive deeper into the world of ODC! Ricardo Alves (OutSystems) will join us to tell all about the new Data Fabric. After that, Sezen de Bruijn (OutSystems) will get into the details on how to best design a sturdy architecture within ODC.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

22. Open source can multiply the effects – both positive
and negative
• Efficiency (or ineffiency) can spread and multiply easily
• Optimization possibilities on all layers from apps to hardware and
servers
• Libraries should be cleaned from redundant sections, dead code or
artefacts that slow down applications.
• Avoiding waste of energy due to unused running processes and
resources.
• Openness and transparency allows comparisons and improvement.
• Re-use can eliminate unnecessary work.

26. A Green ICT ecosystem – building
sustainability and competitiveness for
businesses in the Uusimaa region
• We increase the supply of low-carbon
digital products and services, help
decrease the carbon footprint of public
ICT procurement and increase
awareness of Green ICT in Finland.
• We have i.e. founded the Green ICT
Ecosystem, a professional network for
developers and procurers.
• By 2023 we have published a buyer’s
guide and a developer’s guide and
produced an online tool to aid orgs in
Green ICT planning.
Project active: 1.6.2021–31.5.2023

27. Coming up: tool for creating new
Green ICT services and solutions
5 ICT SMEs from the Helsinki Metropolitan area involved receive a
detailed plan on developing their business according to Green ICT
principles.
Business model, products, services & processes reviewed in accordance
to Green ICT principles (less emissions from products and operations).
The end product is an online tool that evaluates potential emissions of a
software engineering project, and prints out a list of suggestions with
relevant sources to minimise them.

• We aid public sector organisations in
low-carbon ICT procurement.
• We achieve this by devising metrics
and a measuring app for emissions
and energy consumption
• According to interviews, developers
and buyers require information on
e.g. automatically updating data,
sustainable coding and architecture,
effects of user behaviour on
emissions and energy consumption

Editor's Notes
Emissions 3-5% according to the ministry of traffic and communications, energy consumption 4-10%, likely to increase as digitalisation and technical advancements progress
Data centres: 29% of them run on Linux, OS-based sustainable developments to code helps a lot on a large scale
Many apps run on OS-based coding, scalability
5. The Green ICT mindset systemic, not a bandaid
Waste management: in 2019, 17 % of electrical devices globally were recycled in an appropriate manner.
