Welcome to the class where we try to ease your fears about having a baby come into your home in a short time. Babies grow quickly and develop through their interactions with the people around them and their environment (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). Babies are alert from birth. They take cues from care giver’s faces and body language. Babies and toddlers watch all the time. Their wheels are always turning and soaking up what they see/learn. Mothers who hold their babies all the time, co-sleep and feel that you cannot show too much attention on babies may be from more collectivist cultures where the family is essential in all aspects of life. What is some common advice that you hear about babies or parenting? Perhaps don’t spoil crying babies, babies should sleep on their stomach. Some of this information is accurate and other is not. These ideas are perpetuated by cultural beliefs (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). If a culture has an emphasis on independence and self-regulation, parents might be less willing to soothe a crying infant immediately. One thing to keep in mind is that babies cannot communicate with you any other way than cry, so don’t get angry when they are just trying to express their need for food, diapers, or love. As they grow into toddlers, you will notice that they always explore their surroundings. You will notice that at times they cry for no reason and seek your attention. Through this action, children are beginning to develop a secure attachment and know that no matter where you go, I am here when you return (This is developing healthy attachment.) Play is also a valuable way that children grow and develop. Each parent’s view toys as serving different purposes (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). Some parents see toys as ways to distract kids but then some view play as a child’s job and an essential aspect of learning. This view also varies by culture. An essential element in building strong relationships is your willingness to engage in conversations that support children’s sense of self, that let them know they are safe and honored exactly as who they are. Children live in a world that sends multiple, stereotype‑laden messages about their comparative value, their right to be visible, and how they are expected to behave based on their economic class, ethnicity, gender, abilities, racial identity, and religion. These overt and covert messages affect their own sense of self‑worth and how they think about people who are different. Avoiding conversations about identity and fairness is a disservice to children who are developmentally dependent upon adults to help them make sense of the complex and contradictory societal messages they receive.
When programs do not demonstrate respect for and acknowledgement of human diversity, children and families cannot feel truly seen or honored. When a teacher avoids directly addressing comments or behaviors that can hurt another child, no child feels safe. Keeping silent not only does not help children, it actively hurts them. Learning how to break this silence, how to talk about anti‑bias issues with clarity, courage, and caring, is an essential skill not only in the world of early childhood education but in the world at large. Chapter 8: The Preschool Years
The preschool years are important. Research shows us that children who attend preschool do better in kindergarten and first grade. However, not every state offers public preschool. And, many schools that do offer this, offer it only to children with special needs (and then regular education students may need to win a lottery to get in). Although children who do not have a special need may attend, they are usually screened and placed on waiting lists. Also, there is typically a tuition to pay for the child if he/she does not have a special need.
Your text introduces the idea of universal prekindergarten: providing preschool for every child whose parents want it (preschool for all children) on page. But, keep in mind that universal prek doesn’t mean that your child must attend, it simply means that it is available if you would like it. I point this out because many people (in particular, stay at home moms) think that this is the government’s way of not allowing them the choice to stay home and educate their own child. Therefore, there are parents who are against this.
In the past, socialization skills were the focus of prekindergarten however; sad but true, today there is a decided move away from socialization as the primary function for enrolling children in preschool. Preschools are now promoted as places to accomplish many more skills than just socialization! This plays a role in my comments above about not all parents favoring universal prek; the stress toward academic success is definitely a concern for many.
Of course, high-quality affordable preschool can be difficult to come by. We know that children benefit from attending high-quality preschool, but high-quality preschool also often comes with a high price. Thus, it can be difficult for many parents to have the ability to send their child to preschool.
The children of today are different than the children of the past. Aside from the many academic expectations the children have placed upon them, we may need to find new and innovative ways to teach them - making the learning environment interesting and engaging everyday!
Physical Development
During the preschool years, children begin to "slim down" as they have a more elongated look. Their muscle development continues to develop and their actions become more precise. They enjoy activities such as drawing, painting, cutting, and coloring. They also learn more about how to take care of themselves as they learn about hygiene - washing hands and brushing teeth - as well as the ability to dress one's self.
Social/Emotional Development
Preschool children are in Erikson’s psychosocial development state of initiative versus guilt. It’s important to keep this in mind because it can be difficult to have patience with young children! Everyone bring^s specific vaiues,

with infants and toddlers. Even two teach-
ers who share the same ethnic culture may
not share the same beliefs about what is
best for young children. Conflicts around
these issues can arise with colleagues and
families in early care and education pro-
grams. Recognizing and acknowledging
another person's point of view and coming
to a shared solution is critical in providing
high-quality care to infants and toddlers.
The roots of caregiving
It is helpful to understand and explore
two particular areas when caring for infants
and toddlers—self-knowledge and knowl-
edge of culturally informed teaching (Abt-
Perkins & Rosen 2000).
Self-knowledge
Self-knowledge is defined here as "a thor-
ough understanding of one's own cultural
roots and group affiliations" (Haberman
& Post 1998). Before we as teachers can
address the needs of very young children,
we must first become more aware of our
own cultural beliefs and practices. By taking
a good look at our early relationships and
childhood experiences, we can recognize
the influence that these factors have on our
role as caregivers, as well as on our feel-
ings, attitudes, and beliefs about children.
The people we were close to as we grew
up—and our experiences with them—shape
who we are today. Most of us still believe
much of what those special people taught
us about ourseives, other people, and the
world. The messages our caregivers con-
veyed in words and actions reflected their
cultures, beliefs, values, ...

8.1 Problem Solving with Adults
Standard 1 of NAEYC's Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria (2005a) states, "The program promotes positive relationships among all children and adults to encourage each child's sense of individual worth and belonging as part of a community and to foster each child's ability to contribute as a responsible community member" (p. 9). The rationale for the standard is that positive relationships and a positive, nurturing, sensitive climate are essential for the development of emotional regulation, constructive interactions, and overall learning in children (NAEYC, 2005a). Children develop a positive sense of self, and they are encouraged to respect and cooperate with others.
However, problems, conflicts, disagreements, and distrust can—and often do—develop. These can occur between the family and the program, between staff within the programs—staff to staff, directors and staff, staff and consultants—and between children in the program. When this occurs, caregivers need to engage in problem solving. While no family or early care and education program is ever totally without conflicts and issues to solve, the goal is, firstly, to create an environment where constructive problem solving can take place and, secondly, to be able to constructively solve problems.
Feelings
Conflicts, confusion, and disagreements can cause intense feelings among those involved. To address conflicts and disagreements, we must try to determine where these feelings come from. In the heat of the moment, this will probably not be possible, but once we have had time to reflect, we need to look at the feelings that disagreements and problems produce.
We all have feelings, and it is very important to accept and appreciate these feelings. We need to reflect on our feelings and on why certain things make us feel a certain way. Feelings are complex, subjective experiences that involve physical and mental aspects of self—they can be felt, expressed, acted on, and thought about (Greenspan & Greenspan, 1985). All feelings have value and are useful—even ones we view as negative. Feelings are how we react to experiences, and they help us organize and make sense of our world. The great works of art, music, drama, and dance are based on feelings—some pleasant, and some dark and tragic.
We learn about feelings from our childhood experiences. When children are young, adults label the child's emotions: "That bang scared you!" "The dog's bark upset you!" Part of this socialization process is to help children know how to respond to the environment—for safety, to develop appropriate reactions to the environment, and to teach children culturally appropriate responses to their feelings. Other feelings, such as those of love, trust, fear, excitement, and surprise, are natural responses to the environment that help us feel good about ourselves and the social environment (Rogers, 1980).

Black Empowerment,
the author,Barbara Solomon, writes, "Empowerment refers to a process whereby persons who belong to a stigmatized social category throughout their lives can be assisted to develop and increase skills in the exercise of interpersonal influence and the performance of valued social roles" (p. 6).
Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

Deerborne Dialysis is a local dialysis clinic that is part of a larger health care network, Buckeye Health. Deerborne Dialysis was identified as an exemplary model of efficient supply management, and Buckeye Health executives have requested a workflow model of how Deerborne Dialysis handles their supply management process.
Sharon is the nurse who oversees the process of ordering and stocking supplies for Deerborne Dialysis. She knows the process well and developed a description of the steps in the supply management process. First, Sharon conducts a daily check of the supplies in the storage room. If there is a supply that is running low, Sharon submits an order to the medical supplier. When the clinic receives the shipment, Sharon unpacks the shipment and cross-checks the supplies that were shipped with the supplies that were ordered. If there is a discrepancy, the entire shipment must be returned to the medical supplier, who then rushes a new shipment to the clinic to be received the next day. If there is no discrepancy, or once the new shipment is received, unpacked, and cross-checked, Sharon stocks the shelves in the storage room and gives the supply bill to the clinic’s accountant, who ensures that the medical supplier receives payment.

Chapter 8: The Preschool Years
The preschool years are important. Research shows us that children who attend preschool do better in kindergarten and first grade. However, not every state offers public preschool. And, many schools that do offer this, offer it only to children with special needs (and then regular education students may need to win a lottery to get in). Although children who do not have a special need may attend, they are usually screened and placed on waiting lists. Also, there is typically a tuition to pay for the child if he/she does not have a special need.
Your text introduces the idea of universal prekindergarten: providing preschool for every child whose parents want it (preschool for all children) on page. But, keep in mind that universal prek doesn’t mean that your child must attend, it simply means that it is available if you would like it. I point this out because many people (in particular, stay at home moms) think that this is the government’s way of not allowing them the choice to stay home and educate their own child. Therefore, there are parents who are against this.
In the past, socialization skills were the focus of prekindergarten however; sad but true, today there is a decided move away from socialization as the primary function for enrolling children in preschool. Preschools are now promoted as places to accomplish many more skills than just socialization! This plays a role in my comments above about not all parents favoring universal prek; the stress toward academic success is definitely a concern for many.
Of course, high-quality affordable preschool can be difficult to come by. We know that children benefit from attending high-quality preschool, but high-quality preschool also often comes with a high price. Thus, it can be difficult for many parents to have the ability to send their child to preschool.
The children of today are different than the children of the past. Aside from the many academic expectations the children have placed upon them, we may need to find new and innovative ways to teach them - making the learning environment interesting and engaging everyday!
Physical Development
During the preschool years, children begin to "slim down" as they have a more elongated look. Their muscle development continues to develop and their actions become more precise. They enjoy activities such as drawing, painting, cutting, and coloring. They also learn more about how to take care of themselves as they learn about hygiene - washing hands and brushing teeth - as well as the ability to dress one's self.
Social/Emotional Development
Preschool children are in Erikson’s psychosocial development state of initiative versus guilt. It’s important to keep this in mind because it can be difficult to have patience with young children! Everyone bring^s specific vaiues,

ing and child development to their work
with infants and toddlers. Even two teach-
ers who share the same ethnic culture may
not share the same beliefs about what is
best for young children. Conflicts around
these issues can arise with colleagues and
families in early care and education pro-
grams. Recognizing and acknowledging
another person's point of view and coming
to a shared solution is critical in providing
high-quality care to infants and toddlers.
The roots of caregiving
It is helpful to understand and explore
two particular areas when caring for infants
and toddlers—self-knowledge and knowl-
edge of culturally informed teaching (Abt-
Perkins & Rosen 2000).
Self-knowledge
Self-knowledge is defined here as "a thor-
ough understanding of one's own cultural
roots and group affiliations" (Haberman
& Post 1998). Before we as teachers can
address the needs of very young children,
we must first become more aware of our
own cultural beliefs and practices. By taking
a good look at our early relationships and
childhood experiences, we can recognize
the influence that these factors have on our
role as caregivers, as well as on our feel-
ings, attitudes, and beliefs about children.
The people we were close to as we grew
up—and our experiences with them—shape
who we are today. Most of us still believe
much of what those special people taught
us about ourseives, other people, and the
world. The messages our caregivers con-
veyed in words and actions reflected their
cultures, beliefs, values, ...

8.1 Problem Solving with Adults
Standard 1 of NAEYC's Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria (2005a) states, "The program promotes positive relationships among all children and adults to encourage each child's sense of individual worth and belonging as part of a community and to foster each child's ability to contribute as a responsible community member" (p. 9). The rationale for the standard is that positive relationships and a positive, nurturing, sensitive climate are essential for the development of emotional regulation, constructive interactions, and overall learning in children (NAEYC, 2005a). Children develop a positive sense of self, and they are encouraged to respect and cooperate with others.
However, problems, conflicts, disagreements, and distrust can—and often do—develop. These can occur between the family and the program, between staff within the programs—staff to staff, directors and staff, staff and consultants—and between children in the program. When this occurs, caregivers need to engage in problem solving. While no family or early care and education program is ever totally without conflicts and issues to solve, the goal is, firstly, to create an environment where constructive problem solving can take place and, secondly, to be able to constructively solve problems.
Feelings
Conflicts, confusion, and disagreements can cause intense feelings among those involved. To address conflicts and disagreements, we must try to determine where these feelings come from. In the heat of the moment, this will probably not be possible, but once we have had time to reflect, we need to look at the feelings that disagreements and problems produce.
We all have feelings, and it is very important to accept and appreciate these feelings. We need to reflect on our feelings and on why certain things make us feel a certain way. Feelings are complex, subjective experiences that involve physical and mental aspects of self—they can be felt, expressed, acted on, and thought about (Greenspan & Greenspan, 1985). All feelings have value and are useful—even ones we view as negative. Feelings are how we react to experiences, and they help us organize and make sense of our world. The great works of art, music, drama, and dance are based on feelings—some pleasant, and some dark and tragic.
We learn about feelings from our childhood experiences. When children are young, adults label the child's emotions: "That bang scared you!" "The dog's bark upset you!" Part of this socialization process is to help children know how to respond to the environment—for safety, to develop appropriate reactions to the environment, and to teach children culturally appropriate responses to their feelings. Other feelings, such as those of love, trust, fear, excitement, and surprise, are natural responses to the environment that help us feel good about ourselves and the social environment (Rogers, 1980).

Black Empowerment,

Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

Deerborne Dialysis was identified as an exemplary model of efficient supply management, and Buckeye Health executives have requested a workflow model of how Deerborne Dialysis handles their supply management process.
Sharon is the nurse who oversees the process of ordering and stocking supplies for Deerborne Dialysis. She knows the process well and developed a description of the steps in the supply management process. First, Sharon conducts a daily check of the supplies in the storage room. If there is a supply that is running low, Sharon submits an order to the medical supplier. When the clinic receives the shipment, Sharon unpacks the shipment and cross-checks the supplies that were shipped with the supplies that were ordered. If there is a discrepancy, the entire shipment must be returned to the medical supplier, who then rushes a new shipment to the clinic to be received the next day. If there is no discrepancy, or once the new shipment is received, unpacked, and cross-checked, Sharon stocks the shelves in the storage room and gives the supply bill to the clinic’s accountant, who ensures that the medical supplier receives payment.

Nurse informaticists synthesize their knowledge of how technology can improve health care with an understanding of clinical practice and workflow. In clinical settings, patients often present with various respiratory symptoms such as congestion, coughing, and wheezing. While identifying a symptom’s underlying illness can be challenging, it is essential because even basic symptoms such as persistent coughing can be a sign of a more severe disorder. Advanced practice nurses must be able to differentiate between moderate and severe respiratory disorders, as well as properly diagnose and prescribe treatment for their patients. For this reason, you must have an understanding of the pathophysiology of respiratory disorders.
Consider the following three scenarios:
Scenario 1:
Ms. Teel brings in her 7-month-old infant for evaluation. She is afraid that the baby might have respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) because she seems to be coughing a lot, and Ms. Teel heard that RSV is a common condition for infants. A detailed patient history reveals that the infant has been coughing consistently for several months. It’s never seemed all that bad. Ms. Teel thought it was just a normal thing, but then she read about RSV. Closer evaluation indicates that the infant coughs mostly at night; and, in fact, most nights the baby coughs to some extent. Additionally, Ms. Teel confirms that the infant seems to cough more when she cries. Physical examination reveals an apparently healthy age- and weight-appropriate, 7-month-old infant with breath sounds that are clear to auscultation. The infant’s medical history is significant only for eczema that was actually quite bad a few months back. Otherwise, the only remarkable history is an allergic reaction to amoxicillin that she experienced 3 months ago when she had an ear infection.
Scenario 2:
Kevin is a 6-year-old boy who is brought in for evaluation by his parents. The parents are concerned that he has a really deep cough that he just can’t seem to get over. The history reveals that he was in his usual state of good health until approximately 1 week ago when he developed a profound cough. His parents say that it is deep and sounds like he is barking. He coughs so hard that sometimes he actually vomits. The cough is productive for mucus, but there is no blood in it. Kevin has had a low-grade temperature but nothing really high. His parents do not have a thermometer and don’t know for sure how high it got. His past medical history is negative. He has never had childhood asthma or RSV. His mother says that they moved around a lot in his first 2 years and she is not sure that his immunizations are up to date. She does not have a current vaccination record.
Scenario 3:
Maria is a 36-year-old who presents for evaluation of a cough. She is normally a healthy young lady with no significant medical history. She takes no medications and does not smoke. She reports that she was in her usual state of good health until approximately 3 weeks ago when she developed a “really bad cold.” The cold is characterized by a profound, deep, mucus-produci.

the author,Barbara Solomon, writes, "Empowerment refers to a process whereby persons who belong to a stigmatized social category throughout their lives can be assisted to develop and increase skills in the exercise of interpersonal influence and the performance of valued social roles" (p. 6).
Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. Babies grow quickly and develop through their interactions with the people around them and their environment (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). Babies are alert from birth. They take cues from care giver’s faces and body language. Babies and toddlers watch all the time. Their wheels are always turning and soaking up what they see/learn. Mothers who hold their babies all the time, co-sleep and feel that you cannot show too much attention on babies may be from more collectivist cultures where the family is essential in all aspects of life. What is some common advice that you hear about babies or parenting? Perhaps don’t spoil crying babies, babies should sleep on their stomach. Some of this information is accurate and other is not. These ideas are perpetuated by cultural beliefs (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). If a culture has an emphasis on independence and self- regulation, parents might be less willing to soothe a crying infant immediately. One thing to keep in mind is that babies cannot communicate with you any other way than cry, so don’t get angry when they are just trying to express their need for food, diapers, or love. As they grow into toddlers, you will notice that they always explore their surroundings. You will notice that at times they cry for no reason and seek your attention. Through this action, children are beginning to develop a secure attachment and know that no matter where you go, I am here when you return (This is developing healthy attachment.) Play is also a valuable way that children grow
- 2. and develop. Each parent’s view toys as serving different purposes (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). Some parents see toys as ways to distract kids but then some view play as a child’s job and an essential aspect of learning. This view also varies by culture.
