The respiratory system controls breathing and brings oxygen into the body while removing carbon dioxide. It includes the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, and alveoli. The nose warms, moistens, and filters incoming air. The lungs contain bronchioles and alveoli where gas exchange occurs. Breathing is driven by contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles that decrease thoracic pressure and draw in air.
