This talk will describe the RAGLD framework (Rapid Assembly of Geo-centred Linked Data) and examples will be given on how it can be used to make it easier to develop linked data applications. As more linked data and open data emerges a need was identified to meet a rising demand for a suite of application developers’ tools to make it easier to bring together, use and exploit these diverse data sets. RAGLD aims to create a set of tools, components and services to make it easier to develop linked Data applications. This talk will describe the RAGLD framework and examples will be given on how it can be used.

The Jisc Research Data Shared Service (RDSS) is a project that will integrate the offerings of a number of repository, preservation, storage, reporting and information management providers in order to allow UK universities to easily deposit data for publication, discovery, safe storage, and long-term archiving and preservation. This is a pilot project until April 2018 working with 17 UK universities with the overarching aim to ensure the long-term accessibility of valuable research data, allowing it to be reused and shared.

This webinar includes an overview and demonstration of the desktop-based Geospatial Toolkit and the web-based Enterprise Geospatial Toolkit. Participants will also learn how the Geospatial Toolkit was used in Vietnam to support the development of Thanh Hoa’s Green Growth Initiative. The Geospatial Toolkit is a desktop-based application produced for individual countries or regions that allows data visualization and guided geospatial analysis of high-level renewable energy development issues (wind, solar, and/or biomass depending on data availability). The Geospatial Toolkit is designed for use by non-geospatial professionals, but also provides access to the geospatial layers for more advanced analysis. Geospatial Toolkits have been produced for several countries/regions in Asia, and around the world. The Geospatial Toolkit is recognized as a valuable tool providing decision makers with the ability to visualize the renewable energy resources relative to their infrastructure and conduct guided, quantitative analysis of high-level renewable energy resource potential under different scenarios. It can be used to identify areas with large amounts of renewable energy resource potential and/or few barriers to development, allowing more efficient targeting of detailed site analysis needs. The desktop version of the Toolkit is an open-source application, packaged with public data to allow widespread access to the application. Recently a web-based version, the Enterprise Geospatial Toolkit, has been developed, improving access to more spatially and temporally detailed datasets for analysis within the application and externally, improving performance, and providing access to enhanced analysis capabilities. IRENA Global Atlas

One of the key activities in IRENA is the development of renewable readiness assessments (RRAs). An RRA is a holistic assessment of conditions for renewable energy deployment in a country, and the actions necessary to further improve these conditions. An RRA is a rapid assessment of how a country can increase readiness and overcome the main barriers to the deployment of renewable energy technologies. It covers all services (transport, heat, electricity and motive power), and sources of renewable energy, with countries selecting those of relevance. The RRA comprises a process and a methodology that includes completing a set of templates and a final report. On the occasion of the RRA Mauritania, the Global Atlas was presented, as a potential supplier of data, data infrstructure and education for zoning renewable energy hotspots.

Saudi Arabia solar map shows GHI and DNI over Saudi Arabia with several areas of high potential. In this map, you would also find several other ancillary data layers such as, protected areas, hydrography grid, slope etc. This map was created by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for educational purposes only. It shows an example of identification of solar opportunity areas based on exclusion criteria. The base solar dataset was developed by NREL for the SWERA programme (UNEP). Next for the day is Papua New Guinea! The map shows wind speeds at 50m height over the Pacific island country. In this map you would also find layers on protected areas, topography, land-cover, and population density per kilometer. The wind map covering Papua New Guinea is shared from the MERRA dataset by Sander+Partners. The layers on protected areas and population density have been shared by UNEP and Oakridge National Laboratory (ORNL) respectively Access the map through: http://irena.masdar.ac.ae/?map=324

We start with Sudan! The map shows the direct and diffused solar irradiation (DNI and GHI) over the Sudanese territory. It also shows wind resources over the Eastern, Central and Southern parts of Sudan. The transmission grid network for the country is also included in the map. The solar and wind atlases have been shared by NREL and VORTEX respectively and the transmission grid maps by the World bank AICD project. Access the map through: http://irena.masdar.ac.ae/?map=321

Cooperative Mangrove Project: Introduction, Scope, and Perspectives

The superficial (cutaneous) fungal infections involve skin and its appendages, hair and nails. The causative fungi colonize only cornified layer of epidermis or supra-follicular portion of hair and usually do not penetrate into deeper tissues. The distribution and frequency of these infections and their etiological agents vary according to the geographic region, the socioeconomic level of population, climatic variation, presence of domestic animals and age. These infections are usually presented as scaly patches with central clearing with sharply demarcated as annular, erythematous, sometimes with vesicles, blisters and pustules. These superficial fungal infections are also responsible for morbidity, affecting quality of life, have recurrent relapses and drug resistance. This study was carried to find out the prevalence of various fungi associated with superficial fungal infection. This is a retrospective observational study carried to see clinical and laboratory profile of clinically suspected cases of superficial (cutaneous) fungal infection cases attending Dermatology Out Patient Department (OPD) and Skin scrapings, hair and nail samples were collected and processed according to standard mycological protocol. A total of 120 specimens were collected from clinically diagnosed superficial fungal infection cases. Tinea corporis was the most common clinical type in our study followed by Pityriasis versicolor, Onycomycosis and Tinea pedis. Most common dermatophyte species isolated was Trichophyton mentegrophyte and Malassezia sp. followed by Trichophyton violaceum, Candida sp., Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum audouinii and Fusarium sp. Along with dermatophytes, nondermatophytic fungal infections are emerging as important debilitating problems affecting quality of life. Due to different type of antifugal use in different superficial mycoses, laboratory confirmation is desired, to decrease inappropriate use of drugs and drug resistance.

In Israel, desalinated water is a major source of drinking water. Previous studies have suggested that the levels of iodine in water provided by authorities may not accurately reflect the levels reaching end-users. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 21 tap water samples collected from different localities across Israel, 13 posttreated desalinated water samples from three of the largest Israeli desalination plants, and several natural water samples. An improved method of ICP-MS developed in our laboratory was used to analyze the content of iodine and other macro-elements, and determination of iodine was performed in alkaline media. Results: Our results showed that it is possible to distinguish between sample groups based on iodine concentration, water hardness, and Ca/Mg ratio. The median iodine concentrations for four groups of tap water samples ranged from 0.3 to 12.3 μg/L, which is lower than the concentrations previously reported by other researchers in Israel. Based on typical consumption, the water samples can provide no more than 3.39% of the recommended dietary allowance level for iodine. The analysis of post-treated desalinated water samples indicated that these waters comply with industrial specifications but contain only trace concentrations of iodine and much less magnesium than recommended by different public health authorities for public consumption of drinking water. Conclusion: The total iodine concentrations found were lower than several observations reported in previous years in the literature. There are currently no strict regulations regarding iodine and magnesium levels in drinking and/or softened (desalinated) water, but the intensive desalination plant application is already exhibiting a negative impact on public health. Further investigations are needed, but the present study provides useful insights for developing an effective policy to ensure adequate iodine supply for the population of Israel through drinking water.
