Demonstration of the Global Atlas in the ECOWAS region.

  1. 1. Demonstration of the Global Atlas in the ECOWAS region Global Atlas side event World Future Energy Summit, Abu Dhabi, Jan. 20th 2013.
  2. 2. ECREEE- ECOWAS Centre For Renewable Energy And Energy Efficiency WHO ARE WE? • ECREEE is a specialized ECOWAS agency with a public mandate to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency markets • Create and implement tailored policy, legal and regulatory frameworks OUR AREAS • Capacities strengthened and applied OF • Strengthen knowledge management, awareness raising, networks INTERVENTION and advocacy • Business and investment promotion
  3. 3. ECOWREX- ECOWAS Observatory for Renewable Energy and Energy efficiency ( ) Country Profile:an overview of the Interactive Map Viewer: Combining Analysis and Trends: Compare countries Explore section: Information on initiatives, ECOWAS member states based on various energy and socio-economic indicators indicators over time human activities, infrastructure and energy potential helps us to take informed decisions projects, stakeholders, docs from around the world with focus on West Africa
  4. 4. The demonstration of the Global Atlas in the ECOWAS region has been carried out in the framework of the long-lasting partnership between ECREEE and IRENA STRONG PARTNERSHIP • CENER, DLR, ECREEE, EU-JRC, IRENA, ISES, Masdar Institute, MINES ParisTech, NREL, OGC WHAT HAVE WE DONE? • Move from resources assessment to a potential evaluation to support the decision making process • A preliminary screening of sites of interest for on and offgrid solar development in the ECOWAS region based on the Global Atlas data
  5. 5. The demonstration in the ECOWAS region has produced a set of maps of opportunity areas for grid connected and off grid solar photovoltaic Check for the maps
  6. 6. The demonstration was based on an opportunity-based approach ranking the quality of sites by assigning a score to few dimensioning parameter On-grid Yearly global irradiation Grid distance Population density Land cover • Higher score for higher resources • Maximum 150 km • Higher score to shorter distances • Higher score distances to longer • Higher score to lower densities to • No minimum nor maximum to avoid disturbance promote universal access • Pass or fail • Excluded forests and water bodies • Pass or fail Protected areas Off-grid • Considered only for the particular legislations which might apply • No exclusion
  7. 7. Several scenarios have been produced to support the decision making process Different scenarios for grid connected PV
  8. 8. The demonstration in the ECOWAS region opens up new perspectives for the application and use of the Global Atlas Data WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? • The information on the resource is required, but not sufficient for the decision-making process • The evaluation of the potential is needed • The lack or poor estimate of the potentials directly translates into a risk on the decision-making process, and a risk on the decision to move on a national strategy NEXT STEPS • It’s a starting point, useful to initiate the dialogue at regional level for RE development • Results will feed the NREAP and SE4LL Agenda in 2014
