2. What is a genre?
•A music genre is a conventional category that
identifies some pieces of music as belonging to
a shared tradition or set of conventions. It is to
be distinguished from musical form
and musical style.
4. Costumes
• Costumes in pop vary depending on the type of song. If it’s a fun, and summer like song the costume would often be
very brightly coloured. This screenshot if from a Katy Perry Song “Dark Horse”. Here you can see everyone in the shot
is using bold colours, such as the neon blue body paint, with golden necklaces. The second screenshot from the same
music video shows, she is wearing a bold, multicoloured costume. In this shot she is wearing a dress. Females often
wear a range of clothes from dresses, to casual clothes.
• The other screenshot shows a music video “Neon Lights” by Demi Lovato, in her she is wearing a pantsuit, showing the
diverse range of costumes that are used. In the closeup of Demi Lovato's face, she is wearing brightly coloured neon
makeup, with neon blue hair.
• In slower more emotional songs, the artists are less revealing and wear bigger, longer clothes. For example the
screenshots of Adele and Demi Lovato in the big heavy coats, as they want to focus on the entire music video and the
music instead of the artists looks.
• For male Pop stars, they mainly wear casual clothes, or sporty athletic clothes, to show their masculinity. In the
screenshot of Shawn mendes, he's wearing dull coloured clothes to represent the sad pop music. In the screenshot of
one direction, they are all wearing brightly coloured clothing again typical representation of clothing in pop music.
5. Colours
• Pop music uses bright bold colours, mainly pink as pop music is dominated by female artists. Pink is meant to represent women and fun. You can see in the Nicki
Minaj screenshot, bright pink and yellow colours are used which is stereotypically females favourite colours. In little Mixes “Touch” within the first second of the
music video , bright pink, purple, blue and green colours are used as pop music is usually represented as fun part music.
• Another screen shot of Little Mix in another music video with purple trees in the background. The whole video has this blue tint filter to it, making it exciting. The
little mix “Glory Days” album artwork is also very representative of pop music as its predominately using the colour pink again, representing the female gender.
• Male artists mainly use the colour blue within their music videos and album colours, such as Ed Sheerans “Divide” album which blue has been used as the main
colour.
6. Locations
Pop music video locations can be anywhere, the most popular include
deserts, beaches, fields and night clubs. This is depends of the message
behind the song. As you can see screenshots of Miley Cyrus’ song
Malibu is on Malibu beach, as the song is about Malibu The neon lights
music video is in a nightclub as its to do with partying and having fun.
7. Props
• A lot of bright coloured Balloons are used within pop music, as they
represent fun, and partying which is appealing to the young teenage
audience who mainly listen to pop music
• Instruments such as guitars, pianos are used as they are often heavily
featured within pop songs
• Vehicles are often used transporting people from different locations
within the music videos.
9. Costumes
• In the alternative genre specifically alternative rock the costumes
usually consist of leather jackets, baggy clothes, casual clothes, sun
glasses. In this screenshot of “R U Mine” by Arctic Monkeys, they are
wearing dark clothes with just plain t-shirts and sunglasses on . They
are also wearing some bracelets and rings.
• In the Muse “uprising music video” they are also wearing dark
clothing. One wearing leather jackets and others wearing dark coats.
A lot of dark clothing is used to represent the darkness and anger that
is typically found in alternative rock music.
10. Colours
• For alternative music colours vary. In this Muse “Madness” music video a lot of dark and low lighting is used,
with small amounts of different colours lights being used by spotlights within the music videos. This is done
to represent the more darker and heavier rock music they create.
• The colours used in the alternative genre depend on the brand of a certain artist and the music they
produce. The 1975 is another alternative genre band. However their colours used are much brighter and the
lighting used within the music video is much brighter, which is representative of the “feeling good” music
they produce.
• The screenshot at the bottom right, is the Arctic Monkeys album cover. They use black and white to
represent the heavier rock sound they produce. The album cover on the bottom left is the 1975s most
recent album. The colours used are much softer and brighter. The arctic monkeys “Snap out of it” music
video use a very bright and bold colour pallet, from their other videos. This shows that a variety of colours
are used to represent the alternative music genre.
11. Locations
• A variety of locations are used to represent the alternative genre.
They are mainly set a night time, usually outdoors. Coldplay is an
alternative rock band. In their music videos locations are usually
outside in very open places, such as fields, on rooftops. In Coldplays
adventure of a lifetime, the location is set in a brightly coloured jungle.
Some locations are also very closed environments. Such as in
Radioheads “I promise” the entire music video location is on a bus,
with closed framing, representing the more calmer, slower beat music
that they produce, comparing to Coldplays fast pace, bright music
12. Props
• Mainly in alternative music the main props would be instruments as
the focus is usually on the music. Such as guitars and drums.
14. Costumes
• Costumes used to represent the music genre are very stereotypical of
that western “cowboy/cowgirl” culture. In the music video “blown
away” by Carrie Underwood, she is wearing a patterned shirt with
tight skinny jeans.
• Males often wear cowboy hats, with baggy jeans and plain tshirt. This
is demonstrated in the music video “Remind Me” by Brad Paisley.
Men also wear leather jackets, and usually have long hair such as with
Keith Urban in his album cover.
• Females often wear bright coloured dresses. As seen by Carrie
Underwood in “Remind Me”.
15. Colours
• Mainly bright colours are used in the country genre, as the music is
usually gives off very calm and peaceful tone. In Carrie Underwoods
“See you Again” a lot of bright colours are used within this music
video.
• These colours are usually yellows, oranges, reds, greens as the
country genre is associated with nature
This is visible on Carrie Underwoods website as she uses reds and
yellows on her page. This is also present in Blake Sheltons album cover.
16. Locations
• Main locations for country music is out in the open with nature. Often
fields, forests and farms are often used in music videos. They also
often on beaches, as seen in lots of music videos such as Blake
Sheltons “Came Here to Forget” and Brad Paisleys “Remind Me”
17. Props
