Bivalve species like oysters, mussels, manila and hard shell clams can survive for extended periods out of water and can be traded for human consumption as live animals. The primary aim of capturing, holding and transporting live mussels is to deliver them to markets in the best possible condition. Mussels will be exposed to some level of stress during all or part of the trade chain. Stress can be defined as any factor (either external or internal) causing a physiological disturbance to the mussels. In the live mussel industry these factors include capture, de-clumping, fluctuating temperatures, sunlight and other bright lights, wind or drafts, handling and physical damage, poor water quality during holding, conditioning and purification. Mussels are generally able to recover from such stresses, however if any or a combination of those stresses are sufficiently intense, then poor quality (broken shells, gaping, unpleasant smell) or dead mussels will result. The MusselsAlive project aim is to keep mussels alive through the trade chain, by improving good practices and introducing new technology.

Biotechnology advances in Algal Biofuel, one of the promising field for near future! This global warming due to our urgent necessary uses for all aspects of life, whether it is for living or just for recreation, we use fossils as our fuels. Even all your kitchen stuffs, from utensils to plastic containers... from LPG gas to your perfumes, medicines and cosmetics, all and all, directly or indirectly during their processings, uses this carbon emitting FOSSILS FUELS. Phycoremediation is a green technology that supports the direct use of living green microalgae for in situ, or in place removal, degradation, of contaminants in soils, sludge, sediments, surface water and ground waters by the mechanisms of bio-transformation, bio-accumulation, bio-concentration, bio-sparging. It can be said by the current study that microalgae has a great potential for the treatment of industrial and municipal wastewaters as compared to the chemical treatments available commercially. Biological systems are much more efficient in cleaning the excess nutrients from the waste water followed by generation of valuable biomass which can be applied in the food, fertilizer, energy production as use of inorganic chemicals like lime and ferrous sulphate generates huge amount of sludge in textile industries, but on the other hand static anaerobic treatment using acclimatized MLSS gives better colour reduction with zero sludge generation. Microalgal cells can be used in free form to treat waste waters containing high C.O.D., high ammonical nitrogen and high TDS. It not only provides a better reduction of chemicals from wastewaters but it also helps to reduce the operational cost of ETP. Microalgaes not only helps to remediate industrial waste waters but also to treat sweage water and to restore natural water bodies like lakes and ponds. As they are active in remediating the chemicals but also it shows an antagonistic effect against some pathogenic germs like total coliforms and fecal coliforms. These microalgal cells can also be combined with bacterial biomass of activated sludge process to develop an Algal-Bacterial consortium (ALBA) for better enhancement in the reduction of chemicals from the wastewaters as this symbiotic relation of algae and bacteria provides high satiability of the microalgae along with MLSS and faceable in terms of price and economy for instance the bacterial biomass provides carbon dioxide to algal cells for photosynthesis and in return the bacteria acquires oxygen from algae. The harvested biomass from the ETP’s can be used as bio-fertilizers as it consists of appropriate ratio of vital macro and micro nutrients like N,P,K etc. which enhance the growth of plantlets. It can also be used as aqua feeds for shrimps, fishes and molluscs. Furthermore these microlgal cells are non-toxic in the environment as it becomes a part of food chain and do not cause eutrophication. Therefore, micro-algal based treatment is most suitable for the treating the waste waters and restoring the natural water bodies as compared to other chemical treatments.

When soil biology has an oxidizing effect, the supply of bioavailable manganese, iron, copper, cobalt, and other minerals is greatly decreased. In this webinar, John describes why excessively oxidized soils lead to tied up manganese and other metals. He will describe how to change cultural management practices to shift soils to a more reduced state and release mineral metals that are unavailable to plants when the soil is oxidized. Abstract — The most common polymer in plastics is polyethylene (PE), which is made from ethylene monomers (CH2=CH2). In natural form it is not biodegradable. Low density polyethylene is a vital cause of environmental pollution. It occurs by choking sewer line through mishandling thus posing an everlasting ecological threat, the making of the genetically engineered microbes for bioremediation, the latter being a strategy to develop an accelerated evolution of pathways by DNA restructuring. To enhance the biodegradation of polyethylene, pretreatment strategies were followed. Three different pretreatment strategies were employed for the present study, three duration of Pseudomanas putida treatment to PE were analyzed on 7, 14, and 28th day. In the first, PE films were subjected for Bleach with Alkali treatment and in the second they were subjected to UV light (UV-C,>300nm wavelength). Third with the EMS induction of bacterial strains and assessed for polymer biodegradation by Biomass weight loss, estimation of total carbohydrates and total protein in the culture supernatant, followed by DNA isolation for Gel electrophoresis, and Mutated DNA Stability analysis by Capillary Gel electrophoresis were carried out.

In the recent years, bio-based and biodegradable products have raised great interest since sustainable development policies tend to expand with the decreasing reserve of fossil fuel and the growing concern for the environment. Bio-Polymers are a form of polymers derived from plant sources such as sweet potatoes, soya bean oil, sugarcane, hemp oil, and corn starch. These polymers are naturally degraded by the action of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae. Bio-plastics can help alleviate the energy crisis as well as reduce the dependence on fossil fuels of our society. They have some remarkable properties which make it suitable for different applications. This paper tries to give an insight about Bio-plastics, their composition, preparation, properties, special cases, advantages disadvantages, commercial viability, its life cycle, marketing and pricing of these products. As a result, the market of these environmentally friendly materials is in rapid expansion, 10 –20 % per year.

This research deals with study of Degradation behavior of starch blended with different percentage of polypropylene (PP) .Twin screw extruder at 160- 190 °C and 50 rpm is used for manufacture of blend sheet. Degradation test achieved according to ASTM standard (D 638 IV and D570-98). Studies on their degradation properties were carried out by Soil burial test, Water absorption test and Hydrolysis test. The morphology test of the polypropylene / starch blend samples was obviously seen in the (Dino- Light- Digital Microscope), Results of soil burial test show that tensile strength and percentage of elongation of polypropylene / starch blend decrease with increasing the starch content and burial time. The hydrolysis test show the weight losses increasing with the increasing amount of starch. High percent of polypropylene found to decrease the amount of water absorption of the blend. The physical appearance and morphology studies of polypropylene / starch blend after burial test in soil and hydrolysis in water environment showed that all blend samples was obviously changed after 90-day study period, whereas the pure polypropylene samples remained unchanged

With increasing industrialization, rapid economic development, and an ever-growing population, the problem of water pollution and water scarcity is increasing at an alarming rate. It is estimated that more than 800,000 annual diarrheal deaths are attributed to unsafe water usage. Furthermore, traditional wastewater treatment technologies, such as adsorption, chlorination, and biochemical methods are difficult to utilize for treating wastewater at low concentration for they lead to high toxicity. However, Nano TiO2-based photocatalytic technology is a new highefficiency and energy-saving alternative because NanoTiO2 can degrade organic pollutants into non-toxic compounds such as CO2 and H2O under the sunlight. Nonetheless, separating and recycling Nano TiO2 from water remains to be a huge challenge. Therefore, we prepared PVA-Nano TiO2 foam at high speed stirring, film laying, drying, and thermal crosslinking to embed in PVA for reuse and recycle. The morphology, structure, and photocatalytic performance of PVA-Nano TiO2 foam were characterized in detail by SEM, TGA, FTIR, UV-Vis, and so on. The results show the cell size of the foam is about 0.2-0.5 mm, and the swelling degree of PVA-Nano TiO2 foam is about 600%. The TiO2 nanoparticles also have no effect on thermal crosslinking of PVA. Under sunlight, the PVA-Nano TiO2 foam possesses photocatalytic activity that is higher than that of non-porous PVANano TiO2 film due to the higher permeability of water and impurity with higher porosity. In addition, the PVANano TiO2 foam exhibits good reusability under multi-cycle use. Thus, this novel design of PVA-Nano TiO2 foam is simple, eco-friendly, and effective with potential practical application value.

Program code examples (known also as worked examples) play a crucial role in learning how to program. Instructors use examples extensively to demonstrate the semantics of the programming language being taught and to highlight the fundamental coding patterns. Programming textbooks allocate considerable space to present and explain code examples. To make the process of studying code examples more interactive, CS education researchers developed a range of tools to engage students in the study of code examples. These tools include codecasts (codemotion, codecast, elicasts), interactive example explorers (WebEx, PCEX), and tutoring systems (DeepTutor). An important component in all types of worked examples is code explanations associated with specific code lines or code chunks of an example. The explanations connect examples with general programming knowledge explaining the role and function of code fragments or their behavior. In textbooks, these explanations are usually presented as comments in the code or as explanations on the margins. The example explorer tools allow students to examine these explanations interactively. Tutoring systems, which engage students in explaining the code, use these model explanations to check student responses and provide scaffolding. In all these cases, to make a worked example re-usable beyond its presentation in a lecture, the explanations have to be authored by instructors or domain experts i.e., produced and integrated into a specific system. As the experience of the last 10 years demonstrated, these explanations are hard to obtain. Those already collected are usually “locked” in a specific example-focused system and can’t be reused. The purpose of this working group is to support broader re-used of worked examples augmented with explanations. Our current plan is to develop а standard approach to represent explained examples. This approach will enable an example created for any of the existing systems to be explored in a standard format and imported into any other example-focused system. We plan to follow a successful experience of the PEML working group focused on re-using programming exercises.
