This presentation examines the effects of macroeconomic variables on the profitability of listed commercial banks in Pakistan. It aims to determine the impact of inflation, GDP, and exchange rates on bank profitability, as measured by return on assets and equity. The study uses a sample of commercial banks listed on the Pakistani stock exchange. Regression analysis will be performed to analyze the relationship between the macroeconomic independent variables and the dependent variable of bank profitability. The results could help inform strategies to support the development and progress of Pakistan's commercial banking institutions.

The paper aims to see the effect of Nominal, Real (External) and Effective Exchange rates (EER) of the U.S dollar on its Terms of Trade with two of its APEC trading partners Australia and New Zealand for the period 1991 to 2010. For analysis, the whole values, percentage changes and relationships between Nominal, Real, EER and Terms of Trade of U.S with the two countries has been taken into consideration. In order to fully access the relationship between the EER and TOT of the U.S with the two trading partners, the Classical Regression analysis is used. It was found that the Real Exchange rate was overvalued as compared to the Nominal Exchange Rate. It was also found that when compared to Nominal exchange rate, Real exchange rate is more effective in explaining the TOT. The Real AUD/USD had both short run and long run impacts on the TOT of U.S.A with Australia but the Real NZD/USD had no impact on the TOT of U.S.A with New Zealand. The EER has been found to be the most effective in determining the TOT balance. The regression analysis showed a regression function of “Terms of Trade= -122.026 + 2.1 Effective Exchange Rate”. The relationship is found by coefficient correlation (r) and there is found to be a positive and strong relationship between the two variables. The 𝑟2 value shows that although some values of the TOT are caused by the EER, there are also other variables that might be influencing the EER as well. The t-values show that the values of β0 and β1 are significant. Also the F-test confirms the overall significance of the model and terms the results as authentic.

We test for the relationship between de jure and de facto exchange rate classifications on the one hand, and inflation, output growth and output volatility on the other. We find that, once high-inflation outliers are excluded from the sample, only hard exchange rate pegs are associated with lower inflation compared to the floating regime. There is no significant relationship between output growth and exchange rate regimes, confirming results from previous studies. De jure pegged regimes (broadly defined) are correlated with higher output volatility, but this relationship is reversed for the de facto classification. The last result points to a potential endogeneity problem present when the de facto classification is used in testing for the relationship between exchange rate behavior and macroeconomic performance.

This paper attempts to investigate the impact of different bank specific
and macroeconomic variables on bank profitability by considering 23
commercial banks of Bangladesh based on data availability during the
period 2013-17. These data are collected from the individual banks
annual reports, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and a variety of
publications of the Bangladesh Bank. The fixed effect model for panel
data has been applied to operate the regression analysis among the
variables. In the study, three identical measures of profitability namely
Return on Asset (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE) and Net Interest
Margin (NIM) are used. In the model for ROA, the result indicated
that earning variable (TIN, NII), and asset structure (DPST) have a
significant positive relationship with ROA, and asset quality (NPL) has
significant negative impact on ROA. For ROE, earning (TIN and NII)
and capital strength (CAP) have a significant positive relationship of
the entire explanatory variable with ROE. Only asset quality (NPL)
has significant negative impact on ROE. For NIM, earning variables
(TIN), capital strength (CAP) and liquidity (LTA) have a significant
positive relationship with NIM. This study find no significant impact
of the macroeconomic factors namely growth rate of GDP and rate
inflation and rate of interest included in the models on profitability.

Interest (Riba) is stringently prohibited in Islam. It is very difficult task to transform a Riba based economy into
non-interested based economy. This transformation of economy can take place slowly. Development of Islamic
banking industry shows that is growing very rapidly. This study will help to estimate the efficiency of Islamic
banking in Hyderabad by applying Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Technical, cost and income efficiency
will be calculated through DEA. Tobit model will also be applied to investigate the influence of different factors
on efficiencies of Islamic banks. Average technical efficiency score of Islamic banking under constant (variable)
return to scale was 0.837 (0.929), 0.774 (0.943) and 0.913 (0.967) respectively in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Islamic
bank should increase assets and profits which have positive impact on efficiency, while liabilities and no of
branches had negative impact on efficiency. Average cost efficiency score of Islamic banking under constant
(variable) return to scale was 0.623 (0.730), 0.621 (0.854) and 0.879 (0.929) respectively in 2010, 2011 and
2012. Average income efficiency score of Islamic banking under constant (variable) return to scale was
0.365(0.614), 0.387(0.709) and 0.416(0.687) respectively in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The efficiency of Islamic
banks is increasing day by day in Hyderabad Sindh.

This study investigated the effects of six macroeconomic variables on the stock returns in the Jordanian financial market between 1976 and 2016 using annual data. The study used the stock return data for 218 companies listed on the market and the quarterly data of the six macroeconomic variables (Industrial production, interest rates, money supply, inflation, GDP, import prices). Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was employed for the estimations. The reason to test these models in the Jordanian stock market was motivated by the fact that the returns of shares in the Arab markets in general do not follow the normal distribution. The results of the estimated ARDL model revealed that the industrial production has a statistically significant effect on the returns of shares at a significant level of 1 percent, and in line with the hypothesis of the study because the relationship was positive. The effect of the money supply on the stock returns is statistically significant, (positive impact of money supply on stock returns), while the impact of import prices was negative and statistically significant on the stock returns. This work has found that it is imperative to search for new markets for the disposal of Jordanian products, and not rely on traditional markets only such as Gulf markets, the Iraqi market, this requires policies to strengthen and support the role of local industries, to develop global quality requirements, and to develop preferential features for products to be compared with those in other foreign markets.

- 2. Introduction: Role of the financial institutions cannot be understated, financial sector is as crucial as any other development sector in Pakistan. They act as intermediaries between investors and end users of deposits and facilitate in numerous business activities. The banks larger in size are relatively robust to external factors. Profitability is the net after-tax income of banks commonly measured by return on assets and return on equity ratios. In Pakistan, commercial banks have been playing an important role in the economic development and they are also affected by the macroeconomic conditions. The study will strive to find out the effects of macro economic variables i-e: Inflation, Exchange Rate and GDP on the profitability of commercial banks listed on stock exchange. As Pakistan is dominated by Commercial Banks, it is of vital concern to associate their profitability with country’s progress, and hence, a study to identify the cumulative impact of macroeconomic variables on the profitability of commercial banks would add to the strategies devised in interest of the institutions’ development.
- 3. Dependent Variable: Dependent variable is Profitability. Profitability is the net after-tax income of banks commonly measured by return on assets and return on equity ratios. Profitability is the primary goal of all business ventures. Without profitability the business will not survive in the long run. Independent Variables: Independent variables are Inflation Rate, GDP and Exchange rate. Inflation is the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising and, consequently, the purchasing power of currency is falling. Gross domestic product (GDP) is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period. GDP is a broad measurement of a nation’s overall economic activity. Exchange rate is the price of a nation’s currency in terms of another currency.
