The document summarizes research on domestic violence against women living in slums in Bangladesh. It finds that the majority of women suffered physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, often on a regular basis, primarily at the hands of their husbands and in-laws. Educational attainment, wealth, and traditional gender attitudes influence the level of domestic violence, with women in slums facing higher rates of abuse due to lower education and wealth coupled with views that condone violence against women.

RESEARCH ON
THE INTENSITY OF DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

2.
Violence against women is an universal phenomenon. It is an obstacle
to the achievement of the objectives of equality, development of
peace. It violates and impairs or nullifies the enjoyment by women of
their human rights and fundamental freedoms. In all societies, to
greater and lesser degree, women are subjected to physical, sexual,
and psychological torture that cuts across lines of income and class of
culture. In my research, I expect to find the intensity of domestic
violence against women. I have conducted my survey on the women
living in slums.
INTRODUCTION
3. Source 1: According to a survey in a website I found that one in every
five women around the world has been physically or sexually abused
by a man at some stage of their lives (WHO 1997). Sexual abuse is
also followed by unwanted pregnancies, multiple sex partners and
psychiatric problems. About 20% of women suffered sexual abuses as
children. More hundreds and thousands are forced into prostitution or
subjected to violence in places such as schools, workplaces and health
care institutions.
Source 2: “Our studies suggest that education, household wealth,
attitudes regarding gender and violence against women are important
factors associated with this violence. Unfortunately, the slum
population has lower education and wealth and higher violence, [as
well as]… traditional [attitudes] about gender [that condone
violence],” Naved, a co-researcher for the report, told IRIN.
LITERATURE REVIEW
4.
What is domestic violence?
What is the prevalence of domestic violence and abuse against the
women (who lives in slums) in Bangladesh?
Which patterns of violence and abuse against those women can be
identified?
Who are the perpetrators?
Which type of physical abuse do they suffered the most, physical
or verbal?
How often does it occur?
Do they suffer violence publicly or privately?
If publicly then what are the reactions of people around them?
QUESTIONS
8.
From my research I have found that my hypothesis was right to a large
extent. The patterns of the violence can be verbal, physical and sexual.
Most of the women suffer from all these three patterns. The
perpetrators are mainly their husband and in-laws. Most women even
suffer it in a regular basis. However in this period of equality, there are
a lot of examples of superiority (i.e. women are being both assaulted
and dominated) which greatly hampers our humanism.
