This presentation, delivered at the 3rd Cambridge Consortium on Bioethics Education in June 2013, looks at three ways multimedia are being used in teaching bioscience students about bioethics at the University of Leicester, UK. Visual media, primarily short clips, are used in teacher-led sessions. Secondly, students are required to produce their own short films. Digital pathology has many faces. Its stakeholders can roughly be classified into four categories: education, research, clinical, and clinical research. We come together at events like Pathology Informatics or Pathology Visions, and discuss the evolution of the field.
While progression is being made, it sometimes appears that around every corner are more challenges and forks in the road. New applications and scenarios emerge at a rapid pace, and it is clear that a single one-size-fits-all type of software is unlikely to satisfy most participants in this space, if any.
At the institutional level, ecosystems of digital pathology have already been established. At a national level, attempts are being made. At a global level, this is still a wide open question, but one very much worth exploring.
Digital pathology comes with some unique properties, like the data it generates and the pace at which this happens. This guest lecture then will examine the solutions that already exist, and what an inclusive global scalable digital pathology ecosystem may look like in the future.

An Eye-Tracking Study of Query Reformulation
Information about a user's domain knowledge and interest can be important signals for many information retrieval tasks such as query suggestion or result ranking. State-of-the-art user models rely on coarse-grained representations of the user's previous knowledge about a topic or domain. In this paper, we study query refinement using eye-tracking in order to gain precise and detailed insight into which terms the user was exposed to in a search session and which ones they showed a particular interest in. We measure fixations on the term level, allowing for a detailed model of user attention. To allow for a wide-spread exploitation of our findings, we generalize from the restrictive eye-gaze tracking to using more accessible signals: mouse cursor traces. Based on the public API of a popular search engine, we demonstrate how query suggestion candidates can be ranked according to traces of user attention and interest, resulting in significantly better performance than achieved by an attention-oblivious industry solution. Our experiments suggest that modelling term-level user attention can be achieved with great reliability and holds significant potential for supporting a range of traditional IR tasks.

An Eye-Tracking Study of Query Reformulation
Information about a user's domain knowledge and interest can be important signals for many information retrieval tasks such as query suggestion or result ranking. State-of-the-art user models rely on coarse-grained representations of the user's previous knowledge about a topic or domain. In this paper, we study query refinement using eye-tracking in order to gain precise and detailed insight into which terms the user was exposed to in a search session and which ones they showed a particular interest in. We measure fixations on the term level, allowing for a detailed model of user attention. To allow for a wide-spread exploitation of our findings, we generalize from the restrictive eye-gaze tracking to using more accessible signals: mouse cursor traces. Based on the public API of a popular search engine, we demonstrate how query suggestion candidates can be ranked according to traces of user attention and interest, resulting in significantly better performance than achieved by an attention-oblivious industry solution. Our experiments suggest that modelling term-level user attention can be achieved with great reliability and holds significant potential for supporting a range of traditional IR tasks.

The document announces a training session on the anatomy and physiology database Primal Pictures. The training will demonstrate how to search the database and cover topics like reviewing content at your own pace, applying knowledge through case studies, and testing knowledge with quizzes. It will also cover the variety of content types available, like 3D, 2D, and animated images, to illustrate topics. The session will discuss how easy the database is to use for students and faculty and how to save, print, and find evidence-based medicine reviews and clinical answers. The session will be presented by Kathi Grainger on October 21, 2015 at Edwards Hall room 201 from 10am to 2:30pm in one-hour time slots.
