Research Problem
Asking of a good question is the beginning of
research.
A good question leading to formulation of a research
problem.
Can be asked only when the researcher has enough
experience, cleverness and sharp intellect.
A research Problem is a question that researcher
wants to answer or a problem that a researcher
wants to solve.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
It is no problem to solve problem, the real problem
is to identify a problem.
The changes between what is already known and
what is yet to be known.
In other words a research problem is an area of
concern where there is a gap in the knowledge base
needed for professional practices.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
 selection of research problem depends on several
factors such as researchers Knowledge, skill, interest,
expertise, motivation and creativity with respect to the
subject of inquiry.
 Human life poses variety of problems- personal, social,
economic, psychological, physiological, educational and
so on.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
Physical Education need research and the problem can locate in
• Health
• Fitness
• Conditioning
• Recreation
• Management
• Competition
• Motor performance
• Training methods etc.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
Examples
 Effect of plyometric training on reaction ability of
athlete.
 A study on dribbling ability in relation to Agility and
Technique.
 Analysis of Physical Efficiency test in relation to
Physical Education common entrance test in
Telangana.
 Construction of norms for valid Physical efficiency test
for physical education entrance test in Telangana.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
Location or Identification of the problem
The identification of a Research problem is difficult but important
phase of the entire research process. It requires a great deal of time,
energy and logical thinking on the part of the researcher. The
following suggestions are designed to provide direction in the search
for a research problem.
Personal experience of the investigator in the field of Physical
Education is the main source for identifying a suitable problem.
Systematically record unsolved problem- Researchers professional
reading may point out several unsolved problems that could be
taken as research topics.Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
Classroom discussions and critical thinking will be
provide many topics for research.
Analyse literature in an area or subject or field-
analysis of the literature in a particular field is a most
important source of research problem.
Analyse the recommendations suggested in a
dissertation, locate and read a review paper, review
journals, research journals, recent text books.

 Study researches already completed. When the researcher read the already
completed, he may come across the recommendation heading.
 From that he would be able to select some topic.
e.g. If a study with topic “ Personality of women athletes and non athletes” has
been completed, similar study on Men athlete and non athlete could be
undertaken by the new investigator.
 Surfing the net through the innumerable websites. e.g. PubMed, Research

Criteria in selecting Research Problem
Certain external and personal criteria are to be considered in the selection of
a research problem. External criteria have to do with such matters as novelty
and importance for the field, availability of data and method and institutional
or administrative cooperation.
Personal criteria involved are such considerations as interest training, cost
and time etc.
A. External criteria
1. Novelty- The research problem should be a sufficiently original and new
one. The investigator should not select a problem until he is sure that it really
is a new problem which has never before been investigated successfully.
2. Significance of the problem- while selecting the problem, the researcher
has to see whether topic is significant to the profession and useful to the
society. Every problem undertaken for investigation must offer something
practical value to Physical Education, the coaches and athletes.Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
3. Availability of data- Availability of data is another most important factor
affecting selection of problem. For example, if a research worker has taken a
study with a topic, Personal traits of Indian Cricket players, he should able to
get data from Indian Cricket players, otherwise there is no meaning in
selecting this topic.
4.Availabilty of techniques and apparatus- One should have the
appropriate apparatus or instrument and technique to conduct the research
study. If the researcher taken up the study with the topic
A comparative study of blood pressure between hockey and football players,
the researcher should have sphygmomanometer to measure the blood
pressure. He also should know how to use the apparatus.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
5.Avaialabilty of cooperation- Researcher may require cooperation
from various authorities, institutions and individuals. Investigator must
make sure that necessary permission and cooperation will be available
regarding research before selecting research problem.
6.Aim and level of research – The aim of research also influence the
selection of the problem. The nature and scope of the study will be
determined in the light of levels like, Masters degree, M.phil degree and
Ph.D.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
B. Personal criteria
The researcher should have an unique drive to do authentic research work.
1.Interest towards the problem –
 The problem should be interesting for the investigator himself. If
investigator is not interested in it.
 He will not be able to face and overcome and obstacles which come at every
step in research.
2.Researcher’s competence and knowledge –
 Problem selected for investigation should be within the intellectual capacity
and capability of the student.
 If the researcher dose not have any knowledge about physiology, he should
not select a topic from that area.
Dr.Sanjay Kumar Sahu
3.Courage and confidence-
 The researcher should have courage and determination to carry out
the study, in spite of the difficulties that may be involved.
4.Time and financial factor –
 The problem selected should be one that can be studied and
completed in the allotted time.
 The researcher must consider carefully his own financial resources to
carry out the study.
 Based on the above criteria the researcher can modify or change his
topic and select the most suitable one.
