Bukit Bintang is a major entertainment and shopping district in Kuala Lumpur. While it was once the site of racial riots, it has become a popular tourist destination. The architecture and public spaces in Bukit Bintang are diverse, ranging from modern to neoclassical styles. Good public transportation access has supported economic growth in the area through more business opportunities and attractions. This assignment examines the architectural and urban design of Bukit Bintang to understand how built forms shape the urban environment and how people interact with it. Students conduct on-site sketches, photos, and analysis to explore these relationships and issues.

1. Topic:​​Architectural​​+​​Urban​​Language
Introduction
Bukit Bintang is located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur. It is the main district for entertainment and shopping.
Bukit Bintang was once the focal point of the infamous 1969 May 13 riots. Today, this area becomes popular
among tourists and locals. As time pass, the locals migrated out of the city and the city slowly takes over by
the​​tourists​​and​​foreign​​workers.
Facades can affect people, for example, the facade of the Starhill Gallery was claimed to be firmly engaged
with​​the​​public​​realm​​and​​generates​​valuable​​visual​​connection​​along​​this​​section​​of​​Bukit​​Bintang.
Significance
The well developed of public transportation in the area, the people has a better access and shorter travel time
to the location. Therefore creates more working opportunities & tourist spots. Also, it is one of the famous
landmark​​among​​tourist​​&​​the​​local​​where​​it​​tend​​to​​connect​​both​​of​​them​​together.
We are able to observe that the architectural style in East Bukit Bintang changes along the Jalan Bukit
Bintang and turning left to the Jalan Sultan Ismail at the cross junction. From modern Pavilion to Neoclassical
Marriott Hotel then to Streamline Modern (late Art Deco) Ansa Hotel. Each of the building has their own
unique architectural styles and material-used are different as well. The mixed-use architectural elements and
materiality​​makes​​this​​area​​stands​​out​​more.
Objectives
One of the objectives of this assignment is to introduce urban-related issues of the city regarding to
architecture and the built environment. Other than that, it also allows the students to learn architecture and
urbanity through research and exhibition. This assignment encourages us to develop self-directed and
analytical​​skills​​in​​planning,​​conducting​​and​​presenting​​architecture.
Methodology
One of the methods we are using on site is doing quick sketches and taking photographs on site which can
best capture the relationship of the architectural and urban language and the built environment and also the
relationship​​with​​the​​people​​living​​in​​the​​urban.

Basic elements that can be included in the abstracts of architectural language is the archetypal
building elements. The archetypal building elements can be divided into vertical and horizontal. These
elements​​creates​​a​​space​​and​​defines​​the​​function​​of​​a​​building.
Style is a distinctive manner of expression or fashion at a specific time in history. In
architecture, ​historical styles are often designated by specific names like Baroque. It presents a clear
communication​​to​​the​​people​​to​​inform​​of​​the​​history​​of​​the​​architecture.
Mass and shape define form. Mass refers to the volume defined by a structure relative to its
surroundings and to its solidity and weight. Shape is the composition and complexity of the surface
planes.
Both exterior and interior building materials should be selected based upon their
appropriateness for the ​building type​, durability, ​impact on the environment​, climatic conditions, and
the prevailing architectural design. The materials chosen also translates the design intention and
visual​​aesthetics​​of​​the​​designer​​or​​architect.
Elements of urban design consist of buildings, public space, streets, transports and
landscapes.
Buildings can articulate spaces. Public spaces are where the people can gather and spend their
quality​​time.​​The​​streets​​are​​the​​connector​​of​​spaces.
Transport systems connect the parts of cities and help shape them, and enable movement
throughout the city. The transport systems defines quality and character of cities, whether they are
friendly or hostile to pedestrians. The best cities elevate pedestrian experience while minimizing the
dominance​​of​​the​​private​​automobile.
The landscape is the greenery that weaves throughout the city. The landscape helps define the
character​​and​​beauty​​of​​buildings​​with​​soft,​​contrasting​​spaces​​and​​elements.
The creative articulation of space involves the artistic principles that are an integral part of
creating​​form​​and​​spatial​​definition,​​such​​as​​unity​​or​​balance.
