John Ruskin was an English art critic and social thinker from 1819-1900 who had a significant influence on architecture in Victorian England. He championed Gothic architecture and medieval styles over classical styles, helping spark the Gothic Revival. Ruskin believed that architecture should incorporate handcrafted details and reflect local culture and history. He articulated seven principles or "lamps" of architecture - sacrifice, truth, power, beauty, life, memory, and obedience. Ruskin rejected mass production and the loss of craftsmanship, instead valuing individual artistry. His writings shaped aesthetic tastes and values in Britain by linking art to morality and spiritual health.

- 2. What is Functioning Arts/ Crafts • Functional art refers to aesthetic objects that serve utilitarian purposes. The genre is remarkably inclusive: it encompasses everything from furniture and lighting to dishes and even books. Functional art is generally applied art - art created for use, designed to serve a purpose and with an aesthetic in mind
- 3. Importance of Arts/Crafts • Art and craft are an integral part of a culture of any society. It is especially important for children and has a special significance in parenting. Art and craft help develop appreciation of visual aesthetics and function as building blocks for the development of children.
- 4. Different types of Functioning Arts/Crafts • Ceramics and furniture are the most common examples of Functional art as they can be both beautiful and conceptual in design and artistry. Other interesting examples include fixtures such as door handles or knockers that are collected due to their artistic qualities and cultural significance.
- 5. Ceramics • Ceramic art is art made from ceramic materials, including clay. It may take forms including artistic pottery, including tableware, tiles, figurines and other sculpture. As one of the plastic arts, ceramic art is one of the visual arts.
- 6. Furnitures • Furniture can be a product of design and can be considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. It can be made from a vast multitude of materials, including metal, plastic, and wood.
