TORTOISES’FOOD
Most tortoises are herbivors, they eat grazing grasses, weeds,
green leaves, flowers, and some fruits, but there are some
omnivorous species. Baby tortoises feed lettuce. Pet tortoises
can’t eat wild grasses, weeds, green leaves and certain flowers.
Certainspecies consumeworms or insects in theirnormal habitat.
PERIOD OF LIFE
Tortoises generally have period of life different with human,
theyhave lived longer than 150 years, that’s why they symbolize
longevity in some cultures, such as China. The oldest tortoise ever
recorded was Tui Malila, which lived until 188 years old. Harriet
was a resident at the Australia Zoo in Queensland until 176 years
old. Timothylived tobe approximately 165 years old.
THE DIFFERENT BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE
Many species of tortoises are sexually dimorphic, though the
differences between males and females vary from species to
species. Male tortoises have a longer tail than female, while in
others the claws are longer on the females. In most tortoise
species, the female tends to be larger than the male. The male
also has a plastron to aid reproduction. The easiest way to
differencethesex of a tortoise is to look at thetail.
HOW TO FEMALE TORTOISES LAY THEIR EGGS
Female tortoises dig holes in which they lay from one to thirty
eggs. They lay their eggs at night, after which the mother tortoise
covers herclutch with sand, soil, and organic material.
The size of the egg depends on the size of the mother. Upon
completion of the incubation period, a hatchling uses an egg tooth
to break out of its shell. It digs to the surface of the nest and begins a
life of survival on its own. Hatchlings are born with an embryonic
egg which serves as the nutrition for the first 3 to 7 days until they
can find food by themselves.
ADVANTAGES FOR HUMAN
There are some advantages of tortoises for human. First,
their meat can be eat by human because their meat contains
protein which is needed by human. Besides the meat, the shell
can be used to accessories like on the wall, picture, table, chair,
etc. Tortoises also can make human happy because they can be a
pet whichaccompany humanin human’sspare-time.
