2. ONLINE BANKING
Online banking:
It is an electronic payment system that enables customers of a financial
institution to conduct financial transactions on a website operated by
the institution, such as a retail bank, virtual bank, credit union or
building society. Online banking is also referred as internet banking, e-
banking, virtual banking and by other terms.
To access a financial institution's online banking facility, a customer
with Internet access would need to register with the institution for the
service, and set up a password and other credentials for customer
verification. The credentials for online banking is normally not the same
as for telephone banking. Financial institutions now routinely allocate
customers numbers, whether or not customers have indicated an
intention to access their online banking facility. Customers' numbers are
normally not the same as account numbers, because a number of
customer accounts can be linked to the one customer number. The
customer number can be linked to any account that the customer
controls, such as cheque, savings, loan, credit card and other accounts.
To access online banking, a customer visits the financial
institution's secure website, and enters the online banking facility using
the customer number and credentials previously setup. Online banking
services usually include viewing and downloading balances and
statements, and may include the ability to initiate payments, transfers
and other transactions, as well as interacting with the bank in other
ways.
3. FEATURES OF ONLINE BANKING
The common features fall broadly into several categories:
A bank customer can perform non-transactional tasks through online
banking, including -
Viewing account balances
Viewing recent transactions
Downloading bank statements
Viewing images of paid cheques
Ordering cheque books
Download periodic account statements
Downloading applications for M-banking, E-banking etc.
Bank customers can transact banking tasks through online banking,
including
Funds transfers between the customer's linked accounts
Paying third parties, including bill payments (see, e.g., BPAY) and
third party fund transfers (see, e.g., FAST)
Investment purchase or sale
Loan applications and transactions, such as repayments of
enrollments
Credit card applications
Register utility billers and make bill payment
Transaction approval process
Personal financial management support, such as importing data into
personal accounting software. Some online banking platforms
support account aggregation to allow the customers to monitor all of
their accounts in one place whether they are with their main bank or
with other institutions.
4. SECURITY TO ONLINE BANKING
Security of a customer's financial information is very important, without
which online banking could not operate. Financial institutions have set
up various security processes to reduce the risk of unauthorized online
access to a customer's records, but there is no consistency to the various
approaches adopted. Basically there are two types different security
methods:
The PIN/TAN system where the PIN represents a password, used
for the login and TANs representing one-time passwords to
authenticate transactions. TANs can be distributed in different
ways, the most popular one is to send a list of TANs to the online
banking user by postal letter.
More advanced TAN generators (chip TAN) also include the
transaction data into the TAN generation process after displaying it
on their own screen to allow the user to discover man-in-the-
middle attacks carried out by trojans trying to secretly manipulate
the transaction data in the background of the PC.
Another way to provide TANs to an online banking user is to send
the TAN of the current bank transaction to the user's (GSM) mobile
phone via SMS. Usually online banking with PIN/TAN is done via a
web browser using SSL secured connections, so that there is no
additional encryption needed.
Signature based online banking where all transactions are signed
and encrypted digitally. The Keys for the signature generation and
encryption can be stored on smartcards or any memory medium,
depending on the concrete implementation

12. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
We (group 4) all have surveyed the women for online banking by
dividing our work into 10 women each. Each one of us has gathered the
details of women by sending them the Google doc. App. We send our
application to around 250 women. Among them 100 have replied us in a
positive manner & rest haven’t replied due to various constraints.
After we gathered all the information from our prescribed questionnaire
we made a sample size of around 50 women of different age groups &
segmented them in an ascending order & automatically one data base
has been generated in the excel sheet in which we can filter our groups.
But our survey has certain limitations:-
- Every women didn’t use online banking frequently
- Online banking is a platform that allows business and
individual account holders to access bank account
information via the web. The user must log in with a
username and pass code established by the bank to pull up
database information regarding his account
- The age group above 50 are not aware of online banking still
- Before using a banking site that you aren't familiar with,
check to make sure that their deposits are FDIC-insured.
- Customer service can be below the quality that you're used to.
Some people simply take comfort in being able to talk to
another human being face-to-face if they experience a
problem. Not all online transactions are immediate. Online
banking is subject to the same business-day parameters
13. CONCLUSION
After our brief survey, we conclude that the online banking is emerging
at a faster rate & every educated person is using it but still in rural areas
it’s not in use uptill now, people there are still believing in the manual
transactions.
The women between the age group of 21-35 are using online banking
the most in efficient & sufficient manner.
Some women are still not using online banking services because they are
not aware.
Regards,
(Group No. – 4)
