Illiteracy is one of the crucial problems in India. Since a majority of people are living
below the poverty line, many are unable to give a good education to their children. One reason
for such a state of affairs is the costly nature of education and the other is the frustration caused
by the lack of employment opportunities. Many feel that the type of education given is unfit to
equip the students to face the problem of life.
Vocational education is that type which fits a person in a situation where he can
stand on his own legs, after he finishes his education. In some cases, people are also able to learn
and earn at the same time through vocational education. In this form of education, training is
imparted to students in particular professions which they can follow throughout their life. In this
conventional type of education one who leaves school or college is not sure whether one would
be able to get a job or not. This state of uncertainty causes disappointment and frustration and the
object of providing vocational training is to remove this defect. Mahatma Gandhi’s approach
towards education was truly believed on learning by doing. He trusted that education was not
turn on bookish knowledge but also on achieving through training in a professional field. For
achieving the platform of vocational education, he set up “Sabarmati ashram”. He home school
his own children. The ashram was not only for the purpose of political center but also to achieve
his dream of change, cleanses and educate.
Vocational education has a definite advantage over the conventional type of education
as it leads to involvement of children according to their attentiveness. Many specialized institutes
have started vocational courses, in addition to the regular schools which combine these with
academic courses. Rural higher educational institutes, multipurpose schools, technical training
institutes, teachers’ training institutes and industrial training institute give encouragement to
vocational education.
As per Dewey’s principle, youngster learns when they suffer for something. A good
education leads a person to become a good individual as a whole. But in the present situation
when free education is available, many take up vocational subjects in the higher school classes.
Today, many schools have included vocational subjects in their curriculum, but still such
subjects’ are not able to catch the imagination of people and get their support. According to
Gandhi ji education gives a path towards self rule “swaraj”. Implementation of swaraj will
bring down injustice and inequality, which is a human right. One of the most important problems
facing our country is illiteracy. A majority of the people are without the rudiments of education.
Even today we believe that Gandhi’s approach is being implemented today. Few of his
believes may not be true yet, we have in him a pedagogue with a rare vision. Wright Mills once
wrote that all great literature and social science is the ability to see people in reference to their
history and social structure. Mahatma Gandhi had a dream of this kind of education. It was not a
vision of individual but a cultivation of self.
All these factors and truths of Gandhi ji have caused thinking people feel the need for
bringing about changes in the educational policy. The need is felt now more than ever because
our country has to meet new challenges at the turn of the century. The twenty first century is
bound to be a period of trial and test for the present day children and youth. Hence, these people
have to be given proper training to be worthy citizens of a new Indian that is to be born.

Vocational education, therefore, must be an important part of the educational system.
Poor, illiterate people and middle class people who cannot be sure of getting good jobs and
people with such other severe handicaps at the present moment can profit from vocational study.
This will indirectly contribute to the growth of national economy.
