REL 223 - Religions of the World: East and West Journal Guidelines and Rubric Guidelines The journal is to be an example of the student’s ability to write and analyze the material he or she is reading. An attempt should be made to integrate material from the myriad of books and notes in this course. Journal entries should be made for each of the seven major world religions considered. Your journal should contain complete sentences and be grammatically correct. While you are reading, write down what goes on in your head in "stream of consciousness" style in the margins of your book, in a notebook, or in a computer file. You will be making a record of images, associations, feelings, thoughts, judgments, etc. You will probably find that the record contains: Questions that you ask yourself about the narrative and events as you read (answer these yourself when you can). Memories from your own experiences provoked by the reading. Guesses about how the text might proceed and why. Reflections on striking moments and ideas in the book. Comparisons between how you behave and how the author describes actions and behavior. Thoughts and feelings about content. Comments on how the story is being told. For example, write any words and phrases that make an impression on you, or motifs/themes which you notice the author using. Connections to other texts, ideas, and courses. A journal entry consists of two parts: 1. The first part is a direct quotation of the part you noted from the text, copied word for word, and enclosed in quotation marks. Be sure to include the author's last name and the page number of the quotation in parentheses after the quotation. MLA format requires that you use the last name, a space, and then the number, e.g., (Ludwig 89). 2. The second part of the journal entry is a paragraph that explains why you found the passage to be important or interesting. Sometimes students ask questions about the reading, or they explain it, or relate to it in some way. Whatever you do, do not simply summarize the contents of the passage. Instead, go beyond it somehow, analyze it, offer thoughts about why it seems important to you or to others. In essence, by writing about the importance of the passage, you will give it meaning. It is also helpful to explain what is going on in the text at the time of the passage (the context). Some students like to write (1) what is happening in the story, (2) what the passage says, and (3) why the passage is important or interesting. This structure is not necessary, but sometimes it helps you organize your responses. · You will probably use some of the ideas you generated in the "Responding to Writing" worksheet.
· Discuss and offer some analysis of the issues raised in the article, and possibly comment on how the author has presented them, how convincing her/his evidence is, and so on.
· Present your own perspectives, thoughts, and perhaps feelings on the issues. You might describe your own life experiences or experiences of friends, as they relate to the issues in question.

Written Assessment- Reflective Essay
Task: The essay must be 2000 words (+/-10%) in length.
Cover page: The essay must include a cover page that contains your name, student number,

I’ve already read your textbooks, so I want to see you applying material beyond what we are discussing in the course. Professional resources refer to books or journal articles, not Wikipedia or other non-professional sources.

• You may want to begin your search by consulting the following journals: Journal of
International & Intercultural Communication; Communication and Critical/Cultural
Studies; Communication, Culture & Critique
Start by offering a clear definition of the concept under discussion as defined by the authors’ of
the articles you have selected. This is your chance to move beyond using a dictionary for
definition, look at the course reading and academic journal articles and see how the author define
the concept. They may not spell it out completely, you may have to read between the lines and
paraphrase their definition.
You will be graded on your engagement of the material and your grasp of the concept discussed
in class. Use the same process that you have been practicing in the collaborative reading
assignments. How do the three articles discuss the same concept: do they agree with each other,

Code of Ethics: This is a synopsis of some of the most important ethical
considerations you need to be aware of as a professional in the real estate
industry.
Terminology:
Agency: The fiduciary relationship created between a principal and an agent whereby the agent
can act on behalf of the principle for certain transactions. Agency is usually created when the
principal signs a listing agreement to list their property for sale or a management contract to rent
a property for instance.
Agent: The broker or sales associate acting on behalf of the principal (see Agency)
Client: The person with whom the broker or sales associate has a legal contract to represent.
Customer: Is not contractually bound to the industry professional
Principal: Person who hires an agent to act on his or behalf.
Code of Ethics:
#1: The agent has a responsibility to promote the interests of their client(s) and treat all involved
in any real estate transaction in an honest and fair manner. They must disclose if they are a
dual agent (representing both buyer and seller in a transaction) or a designated agent
(represent either the buyer or seller depending on state law), or they are a limited representative
(will provide only certain duties in the transaction per state law).
#2: Agents must openly acknowledge to clients any personal interest they might have in any
transaction prior to showing a property; they must acknowledge any personal relationships
involved. Ex: Agent says, “I want to disclose to you before we look at it, that this property
belongs to is my brother and my sister in-law is his agent.”
#3: The Agent will not allow anyone that is not pre-authorized by the owner, to access the
property of the client.

• You may want to begin your search by consulting the following journals: Journal of
International & Intercultural Communication; Communication and Critical/Cultural
Studies; Communication, Culture & Critique
Start by offering a clear definition of the concept under discussion as defined by the authors’ of
the articles you have selected. This is your chance to move beyond using a dictionary for
definition, look at the course reading and academic journal articles and see how the author define
the concept. They may not spell it out completely, you may have to read between the lines and
paraphrase their definition.
You will be graded on your engagement of the material and your grasp of the concept discussed
in class. Use the same process that you have been practicing in the collaborative reading
assignments. How do the three articles discuss the same concept: do they agree with each other,
do they approach the concepts differently (disagree with each), does one of the articles

For this assignment, you will write a paper no less than 7 pages in length, not including required cover and Reference pages, describing a single personality theory from the course readings that best explains your own personality and life choices. You are free to select from among the several theories covered in the course to date but only one theory may be used.
Your task is to demonstrate your knowledge of the theory you choose via descriptions of its key concepts and use of them to explain how you developed your own personality. It is recommended that you revisit the material covered to date to refresh your knowledge of theory details. This is a "midterm" assignment and you should show in your work that you have studied and comprehended the first four weeks of course material. Your submission should be double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides of each page and should be free of spelling and grammar errors. It must include source crediting of any materials used in APA format, including source citations in the body of your paper and in a Reference list attached to the end. Easy to follow guides to APA formatting can be found on the tutorial section of the APUS Online Library.
Your paper will include three parts:
I. A brief description of the premise and key components of the theory you selected. You should be thorough and concise in this section and not spend the bulk of the paper detailing the theory, but rather just give enough of a summary of the key points so that an intelligent but uniformed reader would be able to understand its basics. If you pick a more complicated theory, you should expect explaining its premise and key components to take longer than explaining the same for one of the simpler theories but, in either case, focus on the basics and keep in mind that a paper that is almost all theory description and little use of the theory described to explain your own personality will receive a significant point deduction as will the reverse case of the paper being largely personal experience sharing with little linkage to clearly described key theory components.

self strongly emphasized the multifactorial nature of evolu-

N A T U R A L S E L E C T I O N is not fully sufficient to explain evo-

The 1970 Koza Uprising in U.S.-Occupied Okinawa

—Overheard by journalists during the Koza Uprising
(Takamine, Shirarezaru Okinawa no beihei)
I came across an account of a riot that occurred in Okinawa on December
20, 1970, that made its way to the front page of many major American
newspapers but then suddenly disappeared from news coverage the next
day. In the aft ermath of the “Koza Riot,” or what I choose to call the “Koza
Uprising” because it was not merely a chaotic and mindless fracas (a point
about which I will address later; see Figure 5.1), over seventy cars owned
by Americans and a few buildings on the huge Kadena Air Force Base, for
which the town of Koza served as an entertainment district, were burned
by Okinawans. No such violent protest by Okinawans toward U.S. military
occupation can be remembered before or since then.
Th is chapter seeks to examine critically the historical and social context
of the Koza Uprising; in doing so, it aims to reveal the nature of a tripartite
relationship between Okinawa, the United States, and Japan. Th at is, the
Koza Uprising took place against the backdrop of U.S. imperialism in Asia
and its colonial rule over Okinawa. Japan had previously been the colo-
nial ruler of Okinawa aft er forcibly annexing the former Ryûkyûan King-
dom in 1879. Consequently, the U.S. takeover of Okinawa in 1945 was the
transfer of control from one colonial ruler to another. However, Japan has
benefi ted from U.S. colonial rule over Okinawa, as its postwar “economic
miracle” was made possible by the U.S. military umbrella concentrated in
Okinawa. In the postwar period, then, Japan became a “junior partner” to

the United States’ hegemonic infl uence in Asia; Japan’s defeat meant that
it was forced to acquiesce to a subordinate status under the United States,
but it did not mean giving up dominant status over other Asian countries.
Okinawa became the “keystone” in this unholy alliance by allowing
Japan to contain the most blatant aspects of U.S. domination in a place far
enough away to remain out of the consciousness of the general American
and Japanese populations but near enough to off er the benefi ts of U.S. mil-
itary presence. Even now, about 20 percent of Okinawa, the main island in
the Ryûkyû Archipelago, is occupied by U.S. military bases. About 75 per-
cent of all U.S. military facilities in Japan are located in Okinawa, despite

The Media’s Gendered Misrepresentation
of Disney Princesses

A gender bias seems to exist when discussing Disney princesses in entertainment media that could have
significant consequences for girls who admire these heroines. Prior research and my own extensions have
shown that modern princesses display almost equal amounts of masculine and feminine qualities; how-
ever, my research on film reviews shows an inaccurate representation of these qualities. These media
perpetuate sexist ideals for women in society by including traditionally feminine vocabulary, degrading
physical descriptions, and inaccuracies about the films, as well as syntax and critiques that trivialize the
heroines’ accomplishments and suggest the characters are not empowered enough. The reviews also
encourage unhealthy competition between the princesses and devote significantly more words to these
negative trends than to positive discussions. These patterns result in the depiction of the princesses as
more stereotypically feminine and weak than is indicated by the films themselves, which hinders the cre-
ation of role models for girls.
Despite significant strides women have made
toward combatting sexism in American
society, news and entertainment media rep-
resentations of women continue to be one of
the many obstacles left before reaching
equality. Numerous studies have identified
gender bias in the ways media represent
women (Fink and Kensicki; Niven and
Zilber; Shacar; Wood). Media tend to favor
representations of women who are “tradi-
tionally feminine” as well as not “too able,
too powerful, or too confident,” over more
complex representations (Wood 33). For
example, research by Janet Fink and Linda
Jean Kensicki shows that when media aimed
at both men and women discuss female ath-
letes, their focus is on sex appeal, fashion,
and family rather than athletic accomplish-
ment. Female scientists as well as female
members of Congress also fall victim to this
trend. Interviews with male scientists often
portray them as primarily professionals
while interviews with female scientists tend
to reference their professionalism while high-
lighting domesticity and family life (Shacar).
Similarly, media descriptions of the female
members of Congress focus on domestic
issues even though the congresswomen por-
tray themselves as having diverse interests
(Niven and Zilber). In sum, biased, gendered
representations of women are common in
various forms of media.
Media misrepresentation of women in
these ways can lead to significant social
consequences, such as reinforcing anti-
quated gender roles and diminishing the
perception of women’s impact on society
(England, Descartes, and Collier-Meek;
Fink and Kensicki; Graves; Niven and
Zilber; Shacar; Wood). Since media are

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
