91 5 Rising Up from a Sea of Discontent The 1970 Koza Uprising in U.S.-Occupied Okinawa Wesley Iwao Ueunten Burn, burn, let the whole world burn! —Overheard by journalists during the Koza Uprising (Takamine, Shirarezaru Okinawa no beihei) I came across an account of a riot that occurred in Okinawa on December 20, 1970, that made its way to the front page of many major American newspapers but then suddenly disappeared from news coverage the next day. In the aft ermath of the “Koza Riot,” or what I choose to call the “Koza Uprising” because it was not merely a chaotic and mindless fracas (a point about which I will address later; see Figure 5.1), over seventy cars owned by Americans and a few buildings on the huge Kadena Air Force Base, for which the town of Koza served as an entertainment district, were burned by Okinawans. No such violent protest by Okinawans toward U.S. military occupation can be remembered before or since then. Th is chapter seeks to examine critically the historical and social context of the Koza Uprising; in doing so, it aims to reveal the nature of a tripartite relationship between Okinawa, the United States, and Japan. Th at is, the Koza Uprising took place against the backdrop of U.S. imperialism in Asia and its colonial rule over Okinawa. Japan had previously been the colonial ruler of Okinawa aft er forcibly annexing the former Ryûkyûan King- dom in 1879. Consequently, the U.S. takeover of Okinawa in 1945 was the transfer of control from one colonial ruler to another. However, Japan has benefi ted from U.S. colonial rule over Okinawa, as its postwar “economic miracle” was made possible by the U.S. military umbrella concentrated in Okinawa. The Media’s Gendered Misrepresentation of Disney Princesses Isabelle Gill | University of Central Florida A gender bias seems to exist when discussing Disney princesses in entertainment media that could have significant consequences for girls who admire these heroines. Prior research and my own extensions have shown that modern princesses display almost equal amounts of masculine and feminine qualities; however, my research on film reviews shows an inaccurate representation of these qualities. These media perpetuate sexist ideals for women in society by including traditionally feminine vocabulary, degrading physical descriptions, and inaccuracies about the films, as well as syntax and critiques that trivialize the heroines’ accomplishments and suggest the characters are not empowered enough. The reviews also encourage unhealthy competition between the princesses and devote significantly more words to these negative trends than to positive discussions. These patterns result in the depiction of the princesses as more stereotypically feminine and weak than is indicated by the films themselves, which hinders the cre- ation of role models for girls. Despite significant strides women have made toward combatting sexism in American society, news and entertainment media representations of women continue to be one of the many obstacles left before reaching equality. Numerous studies have identified gender bias in the ways media represent women (Fink and Kensicki; Niven and Zilber; Shacar; Wood). Media tend to favor representations of women who are “traditionally feminine” as well as not “too able, too powerful, or too confident,” over more complex representations (Wood 33). For example, research by Janet Fink and Linda Jean Kensicki shows that when media aimed at both men and women discuss female ath- letes, their focus is on sex appeal, fashion, and family rather than athletic accomplishment. Female scientists as well as female members of Congress also fall victim to this trend. Interviews with male scientists often portray them as primarily professionals while interviews with female scientists tend to reference their professionalism while highlighting domesticity and family life (Shacar). Similarly, media descriptions of the female members of Congress focus on domestic issues even though the congresswomen portray themselves as having diverse interests (Niven and Zilber). In sum, biased, gendered representations of women are common in various forms of media. Media misrepresentation of women in these ways can lead to significant social consequences, such as reinforcing anti- quated gender roles and diminishing the perception of women’s impact on society (England, Descartes, and Collier-Meek; Fink and Kensicki; Graves; Niven and Zilber; Shacar; Wood). 90 Case 14 Northern Gushers Northern Gushers Drilling has developed a lease on the North Slope of Alaska over the last five years. They have drilled 16 production wells evenly spaced over the four square miles of the lease tract. Every well’s production declines over time, so to maintain a “steady” total flow new wells are drilled. Specifically, total production from the existing wells will decline at 17% per year if no new wells are drilled. All wells have been directionally drilled from the gravel drill pad, which also contains a processing facility (see Figure 14-1). Figure 14-1 Field Arrangement Case 14 Northern Gushers 91 This processing facility separates water and natural gas from the crude oil stream. By reducing the pressure from formation to atmospheric levels, the volatile gases are removed from the oil. The oil is then dehydrated to remove water before transfer to the pipeline. As shown in the flowchart of Figure 14-2, a small portion of the natural gas is used to power the facility. Then most of the natural gas and all the water are repressurized and reinjected into the formation. This reinjection avoids the environmental problems of flaring the gas or surface disposal of contaminated water. It also helps maintain the pressure in the oil formation to increase total recovery. Figure 14-2 Processing Flow Chart The timing of new wells has been planned to maintain a steady flow of about 20,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD). This flow rate is the “shipping space” on the Great Northern Pipeline that has been allotted to Northern Gushers parent company. Fluctuations in Cases in Engineering Economy 2nd by Peterson & Eschenbach 92 production are matched with the shipping space by buying, selling, and trading with other shippers at about the tariff’s cost per barrel. A second consideration has been maximizing total recovery by distributing new wells over the leased tract. Thus, each of the 16 wells has helped maintain current production and also increased total recovery from the field. Now Northern Gusher is facing a different problem. The entire leased tract has been covered by the 16 wells. New wells will be drilled “in-between” existing wells and will therefore have less impact on total recovery from the field. Each new well will increase production now by 2000 BOPD and increase the decline rate by 1%. Since each well costs about $2 million to drill and $1.75 million to tie into the production facilities, the management of Northern Gushers must justify this decision to their parent company by identifying the rate of return on the required capital investment. Additional capital is required every 7 years to do a well work-over for $1.25 million. Abandonment costs in the final year of production amount to 10% of the initial drilling and facility costs. The KMT's candidate (and current Mayor of Taipei) Ma Ying Jeon holds a 50.40% to 49.60% lead over the TSU's candidate Shu Chin-Chiang. Coverage of the elections in the PRC's state-run media Xinhua has focused on two main themes.The first centers on veiled warnings to both candidates to avoid unnecessarily increasing tensions by injecting inflammatory issues (i.e. Taiwan independence) into the election. Their second theme has focused on condemning the TSU's Shu Chin-Chiang as a "reckless war mongerer" whose election would "irreparably damage the spirit surrounding positive negotiations." On the diplomatic front, Taiwan's Central News Agency is reporting representatives from Ma Ying Jeon KMT are believed to be in the PRC conducting undisclosed negotiations. 85 Days Prior to the Election After unleashing a new attack on Shu Chin-Chiang's alleged involvement in a two-year old corruption scandal, Ma Ying Jeon (KMT-52.05%) has increased his lead over Shu Chin-Chiang (TSU-47.95%) by 4.1%. Although Shu Chin-Chiang was exonerated of any involvement in the cash-for-votes scandal, he realizes his vulnerability and has begun holding a series of high-level party meetings to develop a new strategy. 80 Days Prior to the Election Ma Ying Jeon's (KMT-54.55%) continued attacks on Shu Chin-Chiang (TSU-45.45%) has expanded his lead to 9.1%. Ma Ying Jeon's (KMT-54.95%) lead over Shu Chin-Chiang (TSU-45.05%) has continued to grow, albeit at a slower pace. 70 DAYS PRIOR TO THE ELECTION In the wake of the Central News Agency's report, Shu Chin-Chiang (TSU) has launched a blistering attack on the KMT for conspiring with the PRC to influence the outcome of the presidential elections. Citing Taiwan's Central News Agency report that KMT members were in the PRC approximately three weeks earlier, Shu Chin-Chiang (TSU) accused the KMT of "working with the enemy in order to maintain their political control." All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth. Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority. Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages. Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
