This document presents information on the practice of rejuvenation in apple orchards and its major factors. Rejuvenation involves restoring the vitality of apple trees through pruning, top working, manuring, and controlling devitalizing agents. It is done when trees become unproductive due to issues like pest infestation, improper planting, or weather conditions. The sequential steps of rejuvenation include pruning, top working with a desired variety, manuring, and controlling diseases. Rejuvenation benefits include increased productivity, easier orchard management, and restoration of soil fertility.

6. INTRODUCTION
Apple is temperate fruit. It is consumed world wide.
Commonly known as premire fruit or fruit of health.
Grown in places where winter are cold, summers are mild and spring are frost
free.
Origin – South western asia
In india, apple is introduced by Captain Lee in 1865 in Kullu valley, HP.
Rich in nutrients like carbs [ 15% ], protiens [0.3%], potassium, phosphorus and
calcium.
7. AREA COVERED
1. In India , apple is commercially grown in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and
Uttrakhand .
2. In India , apple acquires an area of

10. REJUVENATION
Rejuvenation means restoring the vitality
and freshness of plants.
It is another name of renewal.
It is practiced to restore the fertility of
trees in the orchard.
It is time taking and a messy process
which might take 3 to 4 years of time.
If the tree is showing huge decline in
production, rejuvenation can restore its
viability.
11. CONTD..
REHABILITATION
When trees becomes unproductive and
uneconomic in orchards , large scale
uprooting and replacement with new
plantations is done. This technique is
termed as rehabilitation.
More costly.
REJUVENATION
The uneconomic orchard problem is
tackled by top working and heavy pruning
instead of uprooting the whole orchard is
known as rejuvenation.
Less costly.
12.
13. NEED OF REJUVENATION
The various factors which make plant susceptible to rejuvenation are :
1. Infestation of orchard
2. Improper planting
3. Faulty site
4. Adverse weather condition
5. Attack of pests and pathogens
14. REJUVENATION PRACTICES
1. PRUNING – In pruning, every attempt is made to remove dead, damaged,
diseased and interlacerating branches. Heading back is done almost to the base of
the trunk. The low stems left thus produce vigorous growth.
15. CONTINUED
2. TOP WORKING – These are done to change the trees of inferior varieties into good
ones. The scaffold branches of the trees are cut back 2 inches to 3 inches from the
point of origin and when the new sprouts come out , they are budded or grafted with
the scion of desired variety , keeping in view that yhe scion is compatible to the
headed trunk. After the top working, only scion branch is allowed to grow and the
rest are removed promptly.

3. MANURING – Fruit trees continuously
remove plant food from the soil unless an
adequate return is made available. Green
manuring is constantly done to replenish soil
fertility. If green manure is absent, a heavy
dose of FYM with good N:P:K should be
provided.
18. CONTINUED
4. CONTROL OF DEVITALIZING AGENTS
Unhealthy and diseased limbs should
be pruned parts should be suitably
disposed. Proper sanitation of orchard
should be maintained.
5. ADVENTITIOUS METHOD OF FEEDING
Old trees with weak shoots can be
envigorated by infusing the sap of
younger seedlings into them. Inarch
grafting is then practiced so that the
tree vigor should be maintained.
19. Timing Of Rejuvination
Winter is the perfect time to start
rejuvenation and shape up overgrown and
neglected trees for a protective harvest in
coming years .
20. CONTINUED
Summer pruning is sometimes also
practiced which is helpful in retardation of
senescence .
It also increase the cytokinin supply and
reduces auxin availability which causes a
temporary lose in apical dominance .
24. CONTINUED
Control of insect pest infestation in apple orchards.
Also helps in thinning and filling the gaps between trees in orchard.
Manuring can be easily done.
Drainage systems can be well maintained.
25. AFTER CARE
Marking the tree with paint or chalk undergoing rejuvenation.
Maintaining proper sanitation in orchard.
Use of proper manures and fertilizers for proper rejuvenation .
Making pits for preventing fungal infection.
27. CONCLUSION
For overcoming the unfruitfulness and unproductive trees, rejuvenation is
practiced.
Canopy management is practiced by doing top working and pruning of orchards.
Orchard planting is very expensive and tideous process and hence its rejuvenation
is practiced.
Hence, it is very economical.
