He was to serve as Governor General of all British Territories in India. Governor General was to be assisted by an executive council of four members. - 8. The members of the council were Lt. General John Clavering, George Monson, Richard Barwell and Philip Francis. These members could be removed only by the British Monarch (King or Queen) on representation from Court of Directors.
- 9. 1. Governors-in-Council of Bombay and Madras were required to pay appropriate obedience to the orders of Governor General of Bengal. 2. Governor-General in council was given power to make rules, ordinances and regulations. 3. These rules and regulations were required to be registered with the Supremes court and could be dissolved by the king-in council within 2 years.
- 10. Conclusion • Act did not prove to be a long term solution to concerns over the Company’s affairs. • Marked the first step towards parliamentary control over the Company and centralized administration in India.
