To get startedwithyournewRefWorksaccount,go to https://refworks.proquest.com Enteryourinstitutional
email addressandcreate a password.
NOTE: RefWorkssupports ShibbolethandOpenAthens,whichallowsyoutouse yourinstitutionalcredentials
to signintoRefWorks.
Remote usersaccessingRefWorksfromoff-siteorfroma non-registeredIPaddress,musteitherenterthe
unique URL providedbythe institutionaladmin,loginviathe organization’sproxyserver,orloginusingother
institutional credentials(Athens,Shibboleth).
2. There are several waystoaddreferencesintoRefworks.
Begininthe Main Navigationandclickon +Add:
Uploada Document – these are documentsfromyourown computer
files.Example:PDF,PPT,WordDoc. Theycan alsobe uploadedwithdrag
and dropanywhere onthe All Documentspage orImport a Reference
page.
Import a Reference –allowsyouto importreference filesfromother
reference managers,fromlegacyRefWorksandfromothersources.
ADDING REFERENCES
Create New Reference –Search fora title orDOI, review the resultsandsave the onesyouchoose,ormanually
add all reference metadata.Whenselecting Create newreference anew pane will appearonthe right.
You can search fora reference orcreate ityourself.
1. Enter a title,oras much of the title as youcan.
2. Whenavailable,clickonthe lightningiconbutton inthe Title fieldtohave RefWorksmatchthe title
withan iteminthe library.Thisbuttonisalsoavailable afteryouenteravalue inthe DOI field,which
appearsfor mostreference types.
3. RefWorks displayspossible suggestionsatthe bottomof the pane.If youselectone,RefWorkscompletes
the title andfillsthe fieldswithinformationfromthe library.Youcan laterreview oreditfields.
4. To keepthe reference,clickon Save.The reference will be addedtoyourLast ImportedFolder.
5. If no match is found,youcan create the reference bytypinginthe metadatayourselfandclickingon Save.
You can save referencesorarticles,includingfull text(if available) fromanywebsite intoRefWorksusingthe Save
to RefWorksplug-in;refertothe Tools sectionbelow.
You can alsoadd referencesbysearchingin linkedlibrarycatalogsand
publiclyavailable databases.Searchresultscanbe importedintoyour
account withthe clickof a button.
1. Selectthe Search Databases tab fromthe leftsidebar.
2. Openthe dropdownandenterthe name of the database you
wishto searchor selectitfromthe listof recentlyused
databases.
3. Enter the searchterm inthe search box andclick onthe Search
icon
4. Selectthe relevantitemsanduse one of the followingoptions
to save the references:

To exportreferences,navigatetothe page or folderof the referencesyouwouldlike toexport.Clickon Share in
the Main Navigation,then Exportreferences.Selectthe relevantoptionsandclickon Export.
a. Clickon the Foldericonto importintoa specificfolder. Chooseanexistingfolderorcreate a newfolder.
b. ClickonImport. The newlyimportedreferencesare placedinthe Last Importedfolderandcan be
assignedtofoldersbydragginganddroppingorby usingthe Assignto Folder actioninthe MainNavigation.

RefWorkssupportsthe full researchprocessandprovidesavarietyof optionsto
help you better organize references.
Left Sidebar:
All References – Containsall referencesinthe project.
Search Databases – Used to searchfor itemsinexternal linkeddatabases.
Last Imported– Displaysreferencesimportedinthe last30 days.
Sharing – Enablesyoutoview foldersthatwere sharedwithyou.
My Folders– Allowsyoutoorganize referencesintofoldersandsubfolders.A
single reference canbe inmultiple folders. NotinFolder– Displaysreferences
that have not yetbeenmovedintoafolder.
Tags – includestagsassignedtoreferencesthatare imported andtagscreated
by youwhenaddingreferences.A reference canhave multiple tags.
Deleted– Containsall itemsthathave beendeleted.
To add a folder:
1. Clickon +Add folder
2. Name yourfolder
3. Clickon Save
To add a subfolder:
1. Clickon the selectedfolder’skabobicon (onthe right)
2. Clickon Addsubfolder...
3. Followpromptstoname and save the subfolder.
You can sort foldersalphabeticallyordragand dropin yourpreferredorder.Youcan toggle
betweenthe twosortingoptionsusingthe SortoptionunderMy Folders.Whenchoosingthe
customoption,yourlatestcustomsortingisrestored.
Referencescanalsobe organized intoprojects,whichare separate reference
collectionswithunique folders,references,tags,etc.Mostuserswill findthey
can organize theirreferencessufficientlybyusingfolders.Forsome users,
especiallythose workingonmultiple researchprojectswithdifferentgroups
of people,the abilitytoisolatereferencesandfolderswithinaProjectis
needed. YourRefWorksaccounthasa defaultprojectcalledUntitledProject.
You can change the name andcreate newprojectsinthe Manage projects
page.

5. SHARING & COLLABORATING
RefWorkssharingcapabilitiesallowyoutoshare foldersandprojectswithotherswithinoroutside your
institution.Inadditiontoindividualsharing,userscanshare folderswithall usersattheirinstitution.
Selectthe folderyouchoose toshare inyour My Folderstab.
1. Clickon the iconand selectShare Folderor click onthe
Share iconin the Main Navigation.
2. In the SharingSettingsscreenuse the dropdownoptions
to configure:
o Settingsfor:Whichreferencestoshare
o PublicURL: Create a URL to provide accesstopeople whodonot
have a RefWorksaccount.Theywill be able toview,sort,export
referencesandcreate abibliography.
o Sharedwith:Type the email addresses,designate if the recipients
can read,annotate or modifyandoptionallyaddamessage.
3. Clickon Done.
You can share a projectwithotherRefWorksusers.
Doingso makesthema projectownerandgivesthemfull
permissionswithinthe project,includingadding,deleting,and
modifyingfoldersandreferences.
Anyprojectownercan delete the project,aslongasit isnot the
currentprojectof anyowner.
Select“Share thisProject”fromthe Projectdropdownmenuorfroma
project’s“Actions”buttononthe My Projectspage (ProjectMenu>
Manage Projects):
The ProjectSharingSettingspage appears,allowingtoinvite userstothe
project,anddisplayinguserswithwhomthe projectwasalreadyshared.

references,theircorrespondingcitationswill be displayedinthe textbox.
3. Clickon the clipboardicon,navigate toyourdocumentandpaste the formattedcitations.Don’tforgetto
save your paperwhenyou're done!
4. Clickon Continue tobibliographyto generate a bibliographywhichyoucancopyand paste intoyour
document.Youcan alsoclick on Create bibliographyinthe mainNavigationandthenagainon Create
bibliographyto skipcreatingcitations.

Save to RefWorks
By installingthe Save toRefWorksplug-ininyourbrowser,youwillbe able tosave a reference orarticle,
