5. • Air cooled wire and tube type condenser is used in domestic
refrigerator.
• This is a natural air cooled condenser, no fan is used to force air over
the condenser.
• Because of natural cooling area required is very large.
• The fins are provide to enhance the heat transfer.
• The heat transfer coefficient for natural convection is comparatively
less, so more area is provided.
• Wires or fins are also provided to enhance condensation.

11. • Here coil through which refrigerants passes is submerged in shell.
• Water or coolant is taking heat from refrigerant and condensation of
refrigerant occurs.
• Good quality if water is the requirements here.
• If water quality is not good, there is a problem of scaling.

14. Shell and tube
• The shell and tube condenser, as shown in Fig. consists of a cylindrical
steel shell containing a number of straight water tubes. The tubes are
expanded into grooves in the tube sheet holes to form a vapor-tight
fit.
• The tube sheets are welded to the shell at both the ends. The
removable water boxes are bolted to the tube sheet at each end to
facilitate cleaning of the condenser.
• The intermediate supports are provided in the shell to avoid sagging
of the tubes. The condenser tubes are made either from steel or
copper, with or without fins. The steel tubes without fins are usually
used in ammonia refrigerating systems because ammonia corrodes
copper tubing.

15. Shell and Tube
• In this type of condenser, the hot vapor refrigerant enters at the top
of the shell and condenses as it comes in contact with water tubes.
The condensed liquid refrigerant drops to the bottom of the shell
which often serves as a receiver.
• However, if the maximum storage capacity for the liquid refrigerant is
less than the total charge of the system, then a receiver of adequate
capacity has to be added in case the pump down facility is to be
provided as in ice plants, cold storages etc.
• In some condensers, extra rows of water tubes are provided at the
lower end of the condenser for sub-cooling of the liquid refrigerant
below the condensing temperature.

19. • The evaporative condensers, as shown in Fig. 10.10, use both air and
water as condensing mediums to condense the hot vapor refrigerant
to liquid refrigerant.
• These condensers perform the combined functions of a water-cooled
condenser and a cooling tower. In its operation, the water is pumped
from the sump to a spray header and sprayed through nozzles over
the condenser coils through which the hot vapour refrigerant from
the compressor is passing.
• The heat transfers from the refrigerant through the condensing tube
walls and into the water that is wetting the outside surface of the
lubes. At the same time, a fan draws air from the bottom side of the
condenser and discharged out at the top of the condenser.

20. • The air causes the water from the surface of the condenser coils to
evaporate and absorb the latent heat of evaporation from the
remaining water to cool it.
• Though most of the cooling takes place by evaporation, the air can
also absorb some sensible heat from water. Since the heat for
vaporizing the water is taken from the refrigerant, therefore the vapor
refrigerant condenses into a liquid refrigerant.
• The cold water that drops down into a sump is recirculated. In order
to make up the deficiency caused by the evaporated water, additional
water is supplied to the sump. A float valve in the sump controls the
make-up supply. The eliminator is provided above the spray header to
stop particles of water escaping along with the discharge air
