Reflection Paper
Former United States President, Calvin Coolidge, once said, "If you see ten troubles coming down
the road be sure that nine will run into the ditch before they reach you" (U.S President Calvin
Coolidge). Throughout this semester the book Getting On Course showed many ways in order to
have a great College life, by following simple techniques such as how to accept personal
responsibility to developing emotional intelligence. All of these components play a huge role in a
student's life in College. In this paper, I will dive deep in discussing the eight major components that
each College student needs in order to succeed in College and live an easy ... Show more content on

But there was one technique that I used to help me created motivation which was using the formula
for motivation (V x E = M) which was Value (Value placed on education) times Expectation
(Expectation for Success) = Motivation. I used this technique a lot during my first semester at St.
Clair County Community College, it helped me gain the motivation I needed when going
completing all of the Math homework that was assigned and all of the Health quizzes and papers
that needed to be turned in on time. In conclusion, this component also showed how to design a
compelling life plan which was how to set a goal, discover your dream, and also your life plan. It
also showed you how to commit to your goals and dream and how to visualize your ideal future. All
of these techniques have been proven to be very successful. All of these techniques will be always
useful in my college life.
The third component is Mastering Self–Management. This component played a huge role in my
College life. The book showed many techniques on how to master self–management and I used one
technique that helped me greatly and that was having a calendar. I wrote down all of my
assignments, due dates, quizzes, tests, etc, on my calendar which I looked at daily throughout my
semester and it helped me to keep on track with all of my school.

Performance Funding : A Descriptive Study
Performance Funding, A Descriptive Study
During the years 1979 to 2007, 26 states enacted performance funding (Harnisch 2011). According
to the National Conference of State Legislatures, today 33 states use performance based funding as a
source of determination for their higher education institutions. Locally, the state of Louisiana is not
exempt. According to senate bill 337, the higher education commissioner must submit a proposal for
outcome based funding by the end of 2015 to the Board of Regents for approval. Performance based
funds are often used across the United States thus understanding this mandate is critical to the
continued success of higher education institutions. The research shows both the positive and
negative outcomes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dougherty notes that the "First wave of performance funding adoption began in Tennessee in 1979,
and ended in 2000, when a recession struck and caused a sharp decline in new program adoptions
and the discontinuation of many existing programs. It seemed as if performance funding had been
but a passing fancy. However, beginning in 2007, another wave of performance funding arose. The
first–wave programs typically involved a bonus for higher education institutions above base state
funding. The performance funding bonus was relatively small, between 1 and 6 percent of base state
funding for public higher education" (Dougherty and Reddy 201). This policy has been labeled
"performance funding 1.0".
"The second wave of performance funding began in 2007 with two–thirds of these new programs
being re–adoptions of discontinued first–wave programs. In about two–fifths of these wave 2
programs, performance funding typically did not take the form of a bonus on top of regular state
funding. Rather, performance funding dollars were embedded in the base state funding for higher
education.
This has been dubbed "performance funding 2.0" (Dougherty and Reddy 2013).
As noted by Friedel, Performance 1.0 emphasized outcome measures such

Tech Prep Essay
Tech Prep
Although the development and implementation of tech prep education programs have been in
process since the initiation of the Carl D. Perkins Act Amendments of 1990, misconceptions about
tech prep education still exist. As defined in provisions authorizing Perkins funds for tech prep, a
tech prep education program is a combined secondary and postsecondary program that–
leads to an associate degree or two–year certificate; provides technical preparation in at least one
field of engineering technology; applied science, mechanical, industrial, or practical art or trade; or
agriculture, health or business; builds student competence in mathematics, science, and
communications (including applied academics) through a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although the integration of academic and vocational education offers one strategy for developing
the academic and technical competence of students, it does not constitute tech prep. Tech prep
requires not only new courses and a sequenced core curriculum, but courses that take into account
the learning styles of the majority of students, incorporating concepts like that of contextual
learning. According to Hull (1993), contextual learning "occurs only when students process new
information or knowledge in such a way that it makes sense to them in their frame of reference
(their own inner world of memory, experience, and response)" (p. 41). Thus, the applied academics
approach to learning, which involves the teaching of solid academic content by means of hands–on
and vocational applications, follows the contextual learning concept in that it provides for learning
in the context of life experiences–building on what the students already know and applying learning
in the context of how the knowledge/information can be used in the context of exploration,
discovery, and invention (ibid.). One of the goals of applied academic curriculum is that it should
enable students to transfer knowledge from academic content to vocational applications and from
school to the workplace.

Essay about Curriculum design & Inclusive Practices
Curriculum Design for inclusive Practice
In this assignment, I will be discussing what curriculum means, who and what factors can influence
and impact the design of curriculum. Also defining the main theories models and ideologies and
how they contribute to my curriculum, and how they can change various teaching methods.
Concluding with, proposed solutions to improve the curriculum within the Hospitality department.
Curriculum is hardly new in fact it dates way back to ancient Greece and the famous Aristotle's
(384BC– 322BC) who was a Greek philosopher. A student of Plato came up with the categorisation
of knowledge, which I will be discussing later on in the commentary. So curriculum has been around
for years, but the way we understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Product Model – This model is interested in the product of the curriculum: just what does it equip a
learner to do? Tanner and Tanner (1980) argue that this model has been the most dominant model of
the twentieth century. However CALLAHAN in the 1970's with his instrumentalism ideology of
skilling the learner to be fit for work, stated
'To the teacher, I would say that you must satisfy the parents and industry that what you are doing
meets the requirements and the needs of our children' (TES Magazine, 11/10/1996) From the
Rusken College speech in 1976, a whole new approach to education was to be invented and from
this came the introduction of the craft based qualifications, his idea of the government putting
money into education and seeing very little return, made him concentrate on making people fit for
work, in turn helping the economy and paying the government back on their investment. This is the
main model used in my specialised curriculum. One of the attractions of this approach to curriculum
theory is that it involves detailed attention to what people need to know in order for it to work.
Lesson plans are produced with the main theme of 'by the end of the session the learner will

The Benefits Of Going To A Community College
According to Jenkins and Fink, the writers for the Community College Research Center, an average
of 38% of community colleges students transfer to a 4 year college and 42% of the students
complete a bachelor's degree within the next 6 years. Going to a community college is very
beneficial and affordable to children with high or low income. While I am taking Economics my
teacher broke down the concepts and benefits of going to a community college versus a university.
For example, going to Moraine Valley Community College is about $3,570 a year for their tuition,
while the University of Illinois is around $15,686 in tution. If you go to Moraine Valley Community
College for 2 years you will only be paying about $7,140 versus going to the University of Illinois
for 2 years and paying $31,372 Your saving $24,232 dollars if you go to a 2 year college versus
going the whole 4 years. If people are struggling financially this can be a financial advantage. Some
junior colleges cost less than two–thousand dollars each semester for students who attend full time
and it gives students some time to prepare for a 4 year university if they plan on taking their
education further. Going to a community college helps students to set goals and aspects for their
future career they want to pursue to transfer to a university. So why doesn't Joliet West counselors
promote the idea of going to a community college?

Primary Characteristics Of A Learning Centered College
Objective Two: Program Redesign
One of the four primary characteristics of a learning–centered college is that the college assesses its
effectiveness in relation to student learning (the Learning–centered Center College–Camosun
College, n.d.). Currently Blue Community College has 12 special programs that aid in the process of
ensuring the college is learning–centered. The variations of these programs are beneficial to the
needs and interest of all students. It is important to identify and assess if these programs are current
and relevant to the average student. Through my consultation, I have identified that in order for the
college to adopt the characteristics needed to become learning–centered, the primary focus has to be
assessing student learning. Learning outcome assessments will provide Blue Community College
with accountability and transparency to ensure that the institution is providing all measures to
guarantee student success. The assessments can also provide insight into the opportunities and
challenges that are unique to each student and identify the relevancy of these programs. Blue
Community College currently utilizes a program map for its students called a Student Plan. The
student plan allows students to select their own course schedule; however, it provides an outline of
the course sequence. It is imperative to ensure that the needs of the students are considered when
creating an educational map. A through

The Postsecondary State Policy Network
The readings from "The Postsecondary State Policy Network", led by Jobs for the Future, is a
multistate partnership that is assists states in setting policies that will lead to student success and
completion. The supporters of this initiative are Achieving the Dream, Completion by Design and
Student Success Center. The primary focus is supporting structured student pathways from
connection to college through completion. The four pathways are connection, entry, progress and
completion (2014).
I agreed with this initiative and believe the network is well needed, and is committed to help states
create legislative policies that recognize the need for institutional reform strategies. By doing so it
helps institutions provide structured pathways through college for more students, while assisting
students enroll efficiently in programs of study that the student wants to pursue, and keep them
engaged and progressing until they complete their degree or certificate to compete in the job market
(2014).
As an Educator having a program like this at Bergen Community College is essential for many of
the students that struggle with academic success and completion. This program in collaboration with
our already existing ATD would be ideal and would help to set standards and policies that are very
much needed.

The Mission Of Community Colleges
Introduction The purpose of this research paper is to explore the altered missions of community
colleges and related impacts on the historical mission of community colleges. The mission of
community colleges were intended to serve all individuals with an equal opportunity for higher
education access. In this research paper, there will be four guided questions:
1. What was the original mission of community colleges?
2. How has the community colleges mission changed over time?
3. How did the organizational culture impact the community colleges?
4. What are societal factors impacted when community colleges decided to change their mission?
Since there are four guided questions to help address the main research question. There will also be
some subtopics to help us better understand the reasoning toward the altered mission of community
colleges. First, I will discuss about the first community college founded in American history of
higher education and its mission, the influences on community college mission during the
Depression era, and the intention of community college mission after the World War II era. Second,
I will report what I have found about the impact on community college to alter their institution from
a 2 years institution to a 4 years institution. Third, I will discuss what the organizational culture was
like today compared to the twentieth century. Lastly, I will examine some of the societal factors that
impact the altered mission of community colleges.

Dual European School Systems : Dual And Differentiated...
Dual European School Systems The European nation has taken a new initiative toward changing the
traditional school systems that we see in place throughout the world. There are multiple diverse
organizational methods that the countries in Europe are testing for the most effective method of
creating students who are prepped for the work force. The types of organization are split into Early
Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and the compulsory education (European Commission 5).
However, the focus will be on the different compulsory education pathways. These include single
structure, common core, and dual/differentiated education. The single structure focuses on general
education through a single school path with no transitions, while the common core curriculum
provision creates a more universal system of completion of one level of education before moving to
the next general education level (European Commission 6). These said education levels were
updated in 2011 and named the International Standard Classification of Education or ISCED. The
levels start with ISCED 0, Early Childhood Education and Care, and finish with ISCED 7, Master's
degree or Equivalent (European Commission 10). For compulsory education the ISCED levels
utilized are ISCED 2, Lower secondary education, and ISCED 3, Upper secondary education.
Although the European school system has three different organization patterns following the ISCED
guidelines, the dual organization system has set out to change the

The World Is Flat, By Thomas Friedman
In our world of a frequently mutable economy, there is no such thing as a sure thing. The
rollercoaster effect of falling and rising expenses and needs for jobs are continuously changing as
our times become more and more digital. Americans are finding that the life they cherish so dearly
may be gone in a matter of seconds. Most however, lack the concept of why everything seems to be
slipping away. People have become too comfortable riding of the coat tails of innovators that paved
the way before them and they are finding themselves lost in the shuffle. The rest of the world is
catching up and in the words of Thomas Friedman, in The World is Flat, "[we] simply are not
educating, or even interesting, enough of our own young people in advanced math, science, and
engineering" (349). Therefore, we must combat this issue at hand. America has grown idle due to
the achievements of previous ideas and although we have been amusing ourselves, bathing in our
own narcissism, we are no longer at the top, no longer a positive anomaly. We aren't producing
skilled and knowledgeable workers to keep our superiority, which is a direct result of an extremely
problematic education system. Thus, in order to repair the damages done and the severe amount of
problems in the American education system, a better functioning national system of higher
education must be established. I suggest that vocational/technological schools should be combined
to join in with the free community college proposal. This

History of Community Colleges in the United States
Community colleges in the United States develop rapidly and have become a vital component of the
postsecondary education delivery system. As of 2011–2012 school year, 45% of all undergraduate
students were enrolled in public two–year colleges, approximately 8.3 million students (Knapp et
al., 2012. Cited by AACC Fast Facts). And it seems that with globalization and Obama's education
agenda, the trend of growing enrollment in community colleges won't change. A high school
graduate who decides to pursue postsecondary education may face with a dilemma––whether enroll
in a community college or a traditional four–year college. Even within a community college, a
student may be faced with a choice–enroll in a vocational program and enter workforce after
graduation with a vocational certification, or choose an academic program with an intention of
transferring to four–year institutions.
This paper will first give a brief introduction on community college in the United States–its past and
present. Then it will examine four main purposes for students attending a community college today.
In the next part, an economic comparison between community college and four–year university will
be given with a focus on two specific programs. At last, implication and conclusion will be
presented.
The past and present of community college

such prominence" (Brint & Karabel, 1989). Once commonly called

The First Law Passed By The Massachusetts Bay Colony
1. PAST LEGISLATION In the mid 1600's, the first law passed by the Massachusetts Bay Colony
mandated that children start learning the fundamental of education; learn basic reading and writing
by reading the bible and the town's laws. It was believed that for the success and evolution of the
world and specifically their colony, children needed to be educated and knowledgeable.
Furthermore, to strengthen the educational foundation that was forming and with some resistance
from parents, a law was passed in 1647 commissioning the towns create and maintain public
schools. Moving forward, Smith–Hughes Act of 1917 commissioned federal revenue to create and
support of secondary and postsecondary vocational training. Emphasis were placed on instruction in
agriculture, home economics, and trades and industry. This act along with the demand for change
and other outlets for education, open the doors for trades that prepared people for jobs. Legislation
during this time contended that this was the best step moving forward to focus on skills to ensure
people were workplace ready. Several years later in 1958, the National Defense Education Act
contributed additional federal dollars to the schools to raise awareness and to heighten the
fundamental importance and priority to focus on STEM. STEM provides instructions in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math. During this time, emphasis was also placed on strengthening the
foreign languages and provided financial resources and support

this realization, many people have decided to go to college. Those that are in the market for a

This was the overall feeling when meeting the staff at Everest. The classrooms were pristine. The
hallway walls were littered with snap shots of successful students and lists of companies hungry for
newly trained graduates. Yet, there were no students. The place was a ghost town. I could sense that
something was not right. After the tour, Nancy invited me into her office to chat about my career
choice, which she thought was wrong. She convinced me I would be better in the medical field by
boasting about how intelligent I appeared, and she knew I was going to be exceptionally successful

The Legislative Movement : Subsidize The College Education...
The legislative movement to subsidize the college education of undocumented students has been
accredited to the state of Texas, which in 2001 took legislative action (House Bill 1403) and enacted
an in–state tuition policy that allowed undocumented students to pay in–state tuition rates like any
other state resident, moreover, it assisted these students with state financial support (Drachman,
2006; Flores, 2010b, Dickson and Pender, 2013). From that point forward other states have taking
similar legislative steps to subsidize the postsecondary education of undocumented students within
their borders. In California, Assembly Bill (AB 540) was signed into law that same year (Abrego,
2008). However, as Flores (2010b) explains while states like California took initiative to subsidize
higher education for undocumented students they failed to provide in–state financial aid to support
these students. To date, only six states (California, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and
Washington) provide undocumented student with monetary assistance (NCSL). While under "title
IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965" undocumented students are currently forbidden to use
federal monies to fund their postsecondary education (Drachman, 2006:91). When considering that
most undocumented students come from poor families, and that their situation is comparable to that
of low–income, first generation college students, who often cannot afford to pay educational fees

The Inspiration For American Education
Inspiration for American Education In order to find food for her family to survive, a famished
woman rummages around the streets, hunts through trash bins, and asks oncoming pedestrians for
food, but she has no luck and gives up hope. After searching for days and giving up hope, she
wishes she would have gone to college for a better education to support her children. Millions of
men, women, and teenagers suffer each day because they do not have the adequate education for
finding a qualifying job. Although many people have different excuses why they did not go to
college, they have the same opportunities to earn at least a two–year college degree. Since
community colleges and universities provide numerous ways to help students pay for college, all
American students should want to further their education after high school. Although people from
all over the world do not have the proper education to find a high–quality career, they have plenty of
opportunities to succeed and to earn a degree. Receiving a college degree will help people have a
better life and encourage them to accomplish future goals. Why should all American students earn at
least a two–year college degree? All American students should earn at least a two–year college
degree because they can advance in their education, establish a better life, and inspire future
generations.

College Education Is The Best Time Of A Person 's Life
Having a college education is considered a must for success in the real world and it is an archaic and
much believed thought that college education is associated with a successful life. College education
is a necessity for living up to the standards of the world and is necessary for shaping a literate and
well–informed society. College teaches people things that the real world will probably not hence it
becomes obligatory that after passing high school, students need to obtain a college degree. Where
there are many people who disagree with the concept of having a college degree and spending a
fortune on college education because it has nothing to do with success, there are others who
willfully agree that college is undoubtedly the best time of a person's life and college teaches lessons
that one carries with them all lifelong.
There are two sides of the argument; in favor of college education and one that goes against it.
Those that oppose college are people who feel that it is burden and waste of economic resources and
it needs to be skipped out from the lives of the people who need to get acquainted with the real
world as soon as they can because college life and education are a loud cry from reality and it
doesn't really help when it comes to obtaining a good occupation or even the part of making it
through the three–four years of college. The opponents of college education point out various issues
related to college teaching as well as the teachers and the students.

Traditional Programs For Academic Mentors And Mentees Are
Traditional programs for academic mentors and mentees are based on a seasoned professional
working with an in–experienced teacher, and there is a plethora of case studies and literature reviews
on such mentoring relationships. The idea of mentoring harkens back to Classical Greek literature
wherein Homer introduces his readers to the inept character of Mentor (Zellers, Howard, & Barcic,
2008), so it is with a sense of irony that the term mentor is used to describe the experienced member
of such a team. Nevertheless, the idea of mentoring is somewhat timeless and therefore appears
valuable to help new teachers acclimate to teaching because it has survived so many years with little
transformation.

begin the 2016–2017 academic year. During the summer, she asked three colleagues to help design
and execute the program with her. During the fall term in–service, the four of core members met

hired faculty members. The main outcome was to help the newly hired faculty assimilate into the
culture of the college and the small, rural, isolated community, so they would be more apt to stay if
their first year evaluations revealed that their work was up to the college's standards. The advantages
were to be two fold because this type of program should not only help retention of faculty for the
college, but it would also benefit the mentees; "Benefits [of mentoring] to proteges in both business
and academic include rapid assimilation to the organizational culture . . . higher career satisfaction . .

Education Is The Best Important Things For Me Essay
Education is one of the most important things for me. I believe education is the way to be a better
person, and it is the key to being who you want to be. My dream is to be a doctor; however, I have
limited resources. My parents did not have money to send me to college. I am currently getting a
loan for my associate degree. I am concern about the amount of money I am going to pay back on
the loan after I graduate. This is making me anxious and is limiting my likelihood to continue post–
associate degree. I know many people who are in the same situation. Many people drop out from
college, and many also choose not to seek college education just because of the expensive tuition.
That's why I am proposing free college tuition and fees for all Americans, so that students from poor
families can also seek college education without financial worries, so that student can focus on
learning, and so that graduates can start their various careers free of debt or without significant debt
in order to focus on developing the economy.
As in every country, all American are not equal in terms of wealth. There are few people extremely
rich, and we have rich people, then we have the middle class, followed by the poor who struggle to
make ends meet. It is so obvious for poor people to put their basic needs such as food and shelter as
a priority whereas spending money on education represents a luxury for them. However, education

Essay on The American Economy: Profit Over People
In the face of a changing and more globalized economy, a new emphasis has been placed on the
pursuit of higher education in the United States. A sense of desperation abounds as competition and
economic uncertainty drive individuals to pursue more lucrative and stable paths, to which
education supposedly holds the key. Consequently, attendance at colleges and universities has
become a necessity in the view of many Americans. This push for higher education has
consequences for society that have been expounded in the work of Paulo Freire, and his theories
regarding education and oppression in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. In his work, Freire frames
education as a great equalizer and a means by which the oppressed may "liberate themselves and ...

Children, and their performance, are turned into a commodity in this impersonalized system, which
does not encourage quality learning, but rather, quantifiable performance.
Paul Taylor of the Pew Research Center, on NPR's All Things Considered, stated that "in a modern,
knowledge–based economy, the only thing more expensive than going to college is not going to
college." This applies to our economy today. A recent Pew Research study showed that millennials
with a high school diploma make only 62% of what college graduates make. In addition, the study
revealed that 86% of college graduates say they have a "career–track" job, compared to 57% of high
school graduates. Such numbers indicate the importance that receiving a college education can have.
However, the economic necessity of education in our country seems to further distance education
from a "liberating" structure.
When it comes to our universities, economics, too, has an increasing influence. In fact, higher
education itself is an industry, one that is becoming more exclusive as expenses increase, especially
at top universities. According to journalist Jack Lessenbury, this can be said for the University of
Michigan: "Current estimates show the cost of

The African American Wom Shaping Of A Leader
The African American Woman: Shaping of a Leader in Higher Education
History and Struggles of Women in Higher Education
The purpose of this literature review is to explore challenges, experiences, and successful strategies
that African American women have encountered in the shaping of leadership in higher education.
This review focuses on the history and struggles of women in higher education, male dominance,
and African American women who have become successful in leadership roles. Some of the
literature reviewed suggests that if efforts are not made to support the upward mount of African
American women in leadership positions, the possibility of the decrease in this population is
inevitable.
In 1834, Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio was the only institution that did not discriminate in the
admission of students due to race or sex (Watson, 1977). This institution admitted four young
women into a core curriculum, allowing for Oberlin College to be the first co–educational school of
higher education in the country (Watson, 1977). Although the opportunity existed for women to
enter the doors of higher education, enrollment in the college did not guarantee equality. Women
who enrolled in the college had very limited social freedom, could only enroll in specific majors,
and were not given the same level of consideration and respect as their male counter parts (Watson,
1977). Women were limited to studying fields such as education. Professions such as medicine, law,

Undocumented Students Access For Public Higher Education
Undocumented Student Access to Public Higher Education
Elizabeth Fava
Florida International University
EDH 6055: Access and Choice in US Higher Education
Approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants are currently living in the U.S., an estimated
2.3 million undocumented students are in the U.S. K–12 system and yet only an estimated 65,000
graduate from high school (Jauregui, Slate, & Stallone Brown, 2008; Diaz–Strong, Gomez, Luna–
Duarte, & Meiners, 2011). Of those 65,000 students, only 5–10% will go on to pursue any kind of
postsecondary degree (Herrera, Garibay, Garcia, & Johnston, 2013). The issues and implications of
these numbers clearly frame two issues surrounding access policy for postsecondary attainment:
how can institutions of higher education assist this student population and can institutions of higher
education ethically serve this population. These are issues that directly affect access to higher
education for this population, as well as choice of institution to attend.
History and Background of Access to Education for Undocumented Students
The U.S. Supreme Court case, Plyler v. Doe (1982) created legal protection of undocumented
students to receive a free K–12 education in the United States that is still upheld today (Olivas,
2009). However, no such legal protection or mandate exists at the national level for undocumented
students or the children of undocumented immigrants to access postsecondary education. The

Changes Within The Nursing Program
Changes in the Nursing Program
Even though Registered Nurses are in high demand, Victor Valley Community College instituted a
multi screening point assignment to really weed out applicants that are qualified for the program.
"According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), more than 30,000
qualified applicants have been turned away from nursing education programs every year since
2002". VVC offers an associate program, which would normally be two years long. With numerous
test implemented to make sure the student is able to follow through with the program, qualified
individuals are on the waiting list for years.
In 2007, Assembly Bill 1559 was signed; it required Community Colleges and University to initiate
a merit based system. The purpose of the bill was to train more nurses as the population of nurses is
disappearing by the aging population. In the 1990's a disagreement aroused over merit based
Associate Degree Nursing programs. "The Mexican–American Legal Defense and Education fund
threatened a lawsuit for the students of different ethnicities were being denied into the program"
(Berryhill). After negotiations, the Board of Governors prohibited the nursing programs to use such
evaluative systems. The lottery and wait list were instituted and the completion rates dropped.
"Community Colleges have high dropout rates and are turning away qualified applicants"
(Berryhill). In 2008, VVC requirements to enter the program simply by completing your

My First Term As A Declared History Major
This is my second term as a declared History major. Before this, I was a Mathematics major, and
during my time at Umpqua Community College, I worked at both subjects in order to open more
doors in my future. Looking back, I am glad I did this. The reason being is that on Thursday of the
first week of Fall term, October 1, 2015, the UCC shooting occurred. Without hesitation, I drove
down to Roseburg to take care of my girlfriend who was there during the event. Subsequently, I
returned to Roseburg every weekend to spend time with her, my friends, and my family who were
impacted by this event. I sacrificed my co–curricular activities so that I could support my friends

By New Year's Eve, I was ready to take on the change in courses. Then the unthinkable happened.
On New Year's Day, three days before the start of Winter term, my grandfather passed away from a
combined heart attack and stroke. It was sudden and I had no idea what to do. It brought back my
depression, and I was on the brink of giving up entirely. Luckily and thankfully, my girlfriend and
family stepped in and pushed me to not give up and to seek counseling at CAPS. There has been a
lot of improvement which is elicited by my high honors completion of Winter term, my near
completion of Spring Term, and the many other things that have occurred since New Year's Day:
Obtainment of the Florence Gradon Ragen and Louis Brooks Ragen Scholarship and the Nicholas J.
and Thea Yonker Scholarship through the College of Liberal Arts, co–founding Pearlwood Visions,
LLC. with my girlfriend through Google Startup Weekend: Roseburg, declaring pre–education, and
establishing two internships this summer at UCC. Even though there is still residual depression from
the events of this past academic year, I am grateful for discovering that History acts as my
antidepressant; for while I sit in any of my history courses, read a primary source, or am writing a
research paper are the only times that I know I can get past this depression and be successful in my
academics and future career.

A Brief Note On The European School System
European School System
European systems are intricate structures that carefully lead students on the path that compliments
their strengths. With the European tracking system, referred to as university or academic/vocational
streaming, according to Chmielewski (2014), it is the students who are tracked, not their courses
(p.293). In this system, students do not take the same classes as their peers in other tracks. The
curriculum and classes depends on the track they are on. Also, a group of studies found that for
academic/vocational tracking countries socioeconomic status (SES) is highly predictive of track
placement (Chmielewski, 2014, p. 298). A contributing factor to this notion is that fact that this type
of tracking begins when students are much younger than with course–by–course tracking.
Luxembourg School System
In Luxembourg, the educational structure is an intricate system that begins with students attending
primary grade cycles 1–4. According to Shiveley's resource on Luxembourgian educational system
(2016b), each cycle lasts two years and students can be held back in cycle 1–3 depending on their
performance and maturity. Once students complete cycle four, around age 10–12, they move onto
orientation cycle that is similar to the U.S. equivalence of middle school. After this, they will
advance to secondary grade cycles. Within the orientation and secondary grade cycles, students are
tracked and take differing course loads depending on their academic performance.

Although many students apply for jobs it's still not enough to pay for the tuition. However, students

Tuition Cost Solution For College
Tuition is what most high graduates worry about for college. It is a topic that is mentioned in the
news, presidential debates, and amongst students. Some would argue that college cannot be
completely free but that it should be lowered to reasonable price that can make college more
affordable and easier access to low income families. Others oppose this standpoint by stating that
the decrease in tuition would also decrease the quality of education that many are paying thousands
of dollars for. Should tuition cost decrease or remain the same? Tuition effects billions of students in
the United States today. College is expensive for it does not cover books, fees, rides, food, room and
board. Which is the main reason why college students and parents advocate that tuition should be
lowered because there are so many other expenses. If college would lower tuition then it would be
more accessible to low income families. This is proven by the statistics that The Christian Monitor
(2009) has provided;
In 1998, the share of American 25–to–34–year–olds holding a bachelor's degree was rising, and the
US was tied for first place with South Korea. Since 2000, that share has slipped, with America
falling to seventh place...Obama wants America to get back on top with college graduates by 2020.
(p.8) Tuition in the 90's was not as high as it is today. Tuition in the 1990's was lower than ten
thousand dollars vs today, which depending on institution, can be over twenty thousand dollars.

President Obama 's State Of The Union Address
One of the most highly debated proposals from President Barack Obama's State of the Union
address is a new government program that would cover the cost of community college. The
"American College Promise" would provide free tuition to students who enroll in a community
college for at least half–time, maintain a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA), make steady progress
towards completing an associate's degree and cannot have an adjusted gross income of above two
hundred thousand dollars. Obama has stated that the new proposal will benefit roughly nine million
students each year by earning them an associate's degree at no cost. Although the new proposal can
be seen as a panacea for all incoming college students, the opposition is true due to the fact that
community college is affordable, exclusive, and will hurt the economy by causing the current United
States debt to increase.
Many critiques against community college being tuition free state that our economy will improve.
This is being proven by Wyner who states that it is necessary to close the percentage gap of jobs that
will require a college education. Yes, it is true that a college education will be required for 60% of
jobs, it doesn't mean that community college should be free. If anything, making college free, will
affect the economy . The White House stated that the cost of implementing a tuition free community
college program will be over sixty billion dollars over ten years. The money will come from
taxpayer dollars.

Working With Community College Students
Applicability Working with Community College
Having my future sights at working with first generation college students, I saw the applicability of
constructivist theory in the combine use of solution focused and narrative therapy in servicing such
a diverse group of students. Constructivist theory as a whole is applicable with addressing diverse
issues surrounding culture, gender, and social context that influence career choices that are unique to
a client when compared with others. Through a recent article titled the "Use of Constructivist
Approach in Higher Education: An Instructors' Observation", focused on the constructivist approach
being used in a career counseling setting, which presented an insight into clients ' stories. The article
provided some of the positive aspects of narrative therapy by express how gaining insight to a
client's stories "amplify clients ' self–awareness, and develop with clients a future orientation
through action steps" (Hussain, 2012). The article showed how students were able to externalize
their career–related problems and confront them through each counseling session (Hussain, 2012).
Each counseling session Hussain emphasized the importance of the SFT techniques of

technique of leagues from other students as to create a positive narrative for change (p.179–184).

College Is Not For Everyone
Ever since you can remember, you have been attending school, either because your parents said so,
it 's required by the government, or because you really want to further your education. When senior
year approaches your future is literally in your hands. You are trying to decide which route to take.
Should you take the route that most kids take after graduation; college, or should you chose your
own path. You began to consider the cost, the effectiveness, and other problems associated with
college which makes you start to reconsider if college is actually worth it. You have to decide
whether to go to college, an alternative institute, or to get a job. Your dreams are big and you know
the chances of achieving them are less if you do not receive a college degree. After all, a college
degree is a life necessity, depending on what your dreams are. Not everyone would agree with the
sentence above, especially Charles Murray. Charles Murray, a political scientist and author, believes
college is not for everyone. Murray himself writes, "But while it is true that the average person with
a B.A. makes more than the average person without a B.A., getting a B.A. is still going to be the
wrong economic decision for many high school graduates". I have to disagree with Murray on that
because he overlooks the fact that when one is investing in college, one is investing in their self. The
result of a college degree weighs much more than the initial investment. In the end it is all worth

Complexities Of Community College Culture Essay
Complexities of Community College Culture
Brooke Adkison Head
University of Alabama
Abstract
Community colleges do not have a single culture, but rather a myriad of cultures. The culture of an
institution in higher education may not fit into a traditional model due to the complexity of academic
culture. Within an institution, there is a dominate culture, as well as subcultures that exist. In
addition, there are administrative cultures that may interact with the academic culture. The
administration, faculty, staff, and students of an institution influence the culture, institutional goals,
as well as individual success. Due to increasing demands and greater accountability in higher
education, administrators are faced with greater challenges. At the community college level, there is
an expectation for timely responsiveness to meet the needs of the community and workforce.
Educational institutions must demonstrate sensitivity to the existing culture when addressing
challenges in order to make progress.

Higher Education And High Education
Higher education has evolved to become one of the principal means in educating individuals in
specific areas of study such as engineering, management, or the sciences. Universities and colleges
are the places where people go seeking for higher education. It is the reason why the world is where
it is today. Almost all of the inventions that make our life easier today are the outcome of education.
Some students will do whatever they can to make sure they end up in one of these places. Higher
education has been a very important topic for students and their families: some believe that the cost
of higher education is too high; others argue that it is not, and also those who thinks there is no real
outcome to higher education.
There are many people who believe that the cost of college is very high. The rising cost of college
may put higher education out of reach for the average American. In the public four–year sector, the
increase in published tuition and fees from $2,810 (in 2014 dollars) in 1984–85 to $9,139 in 2014–
15 is an increase of 225%, or 4.0% per year over 30 years. The increase over the most recent five
years, from 2009–10 to 2014–15, was 17%, or 3.2% per year (collegeboard.com). The cost has
increased tremendously in the past few decades thus resulting in lower attendants. Many students
are missing out because of the cost and lack of financial aid. Though there are many scholarships

Adult Arts Learning Essay
Adult Arts Learning
The motivations and objectives of both providers and participants in adult arts learning are diverse.
Adult educators seeking to foster transformative learning invoke the role of imagination in
developing new perspectives; they view the arts as a way of engaging adults in imaginative
exploration of themselves and their relationship to the world (Dirkx 2000; Kazemek and Rigg
1997). In adult literacy education, analysis of paintings and poems can be a means of developing
visual and linguistic acuity, critical thinking, and aesthetic judgment (Dreybus 2000; Kazemek and
Rigg 1997). Greene (in Elias, Jones, and Normie 1995) speaks of aesthetic education as a form of
critical literacy to empower people to read and name ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
107). Such therapeutic benefits of creative activity are often an important motivation for arts
participation. In Bardsley and Soskice's (1998) survey, one–third of adult arts learners sought job–
related skills, but the majority were motivated by increased confidence, maintenance of physical and
mental abilities, and recovery from loss or illness. Similarly, in a music appreciation course, two–
thirds of adult participants cited therapeutic motivations such as coping with stress (Buell in Jones,
McConnell, and Normie 1996).
These examples involve different providers: adult educators (Dirkx, Dreybus, Kazemek and Rigg),
artists/arts educators working with adults (Apol and Kambour, Buell), and educators using the arts
in other subject areas (Alburty). In addition, a great deal of adult arts learning takes place formally
and informally in museums, parks, galleries, theatres, and similar venues, organizations that may not
view their role as primarily educative (Chadwick and Stannett 2000). With many different providers,
there are multiple, sometimes competing, purposes for adult arts education. Is it to develop the
individual, to maintain the dominant culture, or to change the culture (Elias et al. 1995)? Is it to
develop appreciative audiences or creative practitioners (McDaniel and Thorn 1997)? To liberate
creativity or to develop technical skills (Milton in Elias et al. 1995)? Is art the means or a goal in
itself; that is, are the arts used for

The Multidimensional Nature Of Globalization
The multidimensional nature of globalization impacts citizens of the world in many ways. This
study will focus specifically on the effects of globalization on higher education with particular
emphasis on the rural community college and the employers served by this segment of the American
education system. Globalization is not a new concept in higher education; however, the impact of
globalization and its affect on rural communities is becoming more apparent. "The impact of
globalization, both in terms of the opportunities it affords and the challenges it presents, is now a
well–established feature of economic development. Due to increased openness in markets,
economies can no longer depend on protection from global competition" ... Show more content on

However, the community college in advancing these globalization efforts, and, in particular, the
small, rural community college, is less defined and has not been researched to the extent that it has
at the university and K–12 levels. This chapter begins by providing the background and context of
globalization as a workplace issue; followed by the problem statement; purpose of the study; and
research questions that the study is striving to address. Concluding the chapter are common
terminology definitions used throughout the study.
Background and Context Americans are entering a workforce that is changing at a rapid pace.
Global competition affecting both businesses/organizations and workers; labor shortages; and the
documented skills gap are all factors that have led to a rapidly changing work environment. Due to
these changes, workers are expected to change and adapt to this global environment. "Education and
training needed to prepare students to be globally competent lacks clarity, uniformity, and direction"
(Hunter, 2004). Dellow (2007) goes on to say that globalization has and will continue to affect our
nation's labor market. Worker training and retraining due to offshoring and outsourcing of American
jobs, along with the creation of new jobs, will require workers to be able to adjust and adapt to these
changes within their communities. To keep pace and prepare

Community College Education Should Not Be Tuition Free
Community College Education Should Not Be Tuition Free Every year, millions of students
graduate from high school and consider studying in community college. The main reason for them
to choose community colleges over four–year universities is the affordable tuition, or they have
undecided majors for their careers. Unfortunately, an academic article published in 2014 "How to
Help College Students Graduate," Kirp demonstrated, "American students are enrolling college in
record numbers, but they are also dropping out in droves" (Par1). Kirp also claimed that "only one
third of community college students graduate" (Par1). In January, 2015, President Obama has
proposed to spend more than $60 billion over the next ten years making community college tuition
free for the purpose of increasing the graduation rates (The Editorial Board Par2). The proposal
seems particularly well–suited in supporting college enrollment; however, from the economic
perspective and the cultural perspective, community college education should not be tuition free.
First of all, offering free college education is not feasible or practical. In fact, community colleges
have been serving a wide variety of students in different age ranges. In other words, students who
are teenagers, working adults, or retirees can attend community colleges. There is no doubt that
college enrollment would rapidly improve since students would be attracted by the free courses, but
it still does not seem to increase the

The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education Essay
The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education
With the passage of the 1988 Family Support Act (FSA), adult basic and literacy education was
linked to welfare reform. Based on experimentation with welfare reform during the previous decade,
the FSA created the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training Program (JOBS). JOBS, which
requires states to make educational services available to welfare recipients, was created in response
to the general consensus that welfare recipients are not well prepared to enter the work force (Cohen
et al. 1994). One of its major underlying assumptions is "that a strong foundation of literacy and
basic skills is critical to the successful transition to employment and self–sufficiency for AFDC ...

Some of this research is based on experiments with welfare–to–work programs leading up to the
FSA (e.g., California's Greater Avenues for Independence [GAIN] program), but much of it deals
directly with the experiences of providing adult basic and literacy education to JOBS participants.
This Practice Application Briefreviews some of these research findings and describes their
implications for practice.
What Does the Research Say?
Evaluation studies of employment and training programs, including the Comprehensive
Employment and Training Act (CETA), the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), and JOBS, are one
body of research that can inform practice. This research has been conducted over the past 20 years
primarily on demonstration programs designed to improve the basic skills and employability of
disadvantaged adults. A synthesis (Cohen et al. 1994) of this research resulted in the following
conclusions that have a bearing on the role of adult basic and literacy education in welfare–to–work
programs:
Because they use traditional pedagogical approaches for which many adults have little tolerance,
adult basic and literacy education programs have experienced difficulty attracting and retaining
participants. Furthermore, many low–skilled adults see no connection between this traditional
approach and their primary goal of getting a

High School Schools Are More Than Other Forms Of College
Most of the general populous seeks some form of higher education after high school. The big dream
is to attend an IV league school and get scholarships to pay for all of it but the reality is that that is
not attainable for most of the people in this country. Some people go to local colleges instead. They
are more affordable and they offer about the same degree of training at least for basic classes that
the four year schools offer. Although community colleges are so helpful to many people and much
more affordable than other forms of college; they cannot take in everyone. Some schools offer
online programs, but not as many as in class. That is where for–profit colleges come in. For–profit
colleges offer schooling for the students that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many students who attend these for–profit institutions are lured in with promises of gainful
employment and job placement but by the time they realize that it will not work out it is already too
late for them. Three women who graduated from Everest College were told that they would be
making twenty five to thirty five dollars an hour (College Inc.). These women were also told that the
college would place them in a job because they had big connections and that sounded really good to
them so they signed up (College Inc.). "Despite graduating and getting licenses, all three women
have struggled to find jobs, they claim they didn 't have the right training. In fact, they were given
no practical experience in hospitals, as they were promised, they were only given training in nursing
homes and health clinics" (College Inc.). "These women, along with ten other students in their class,
want their money back and are considering filing a lawsuit against the school" (College Inc.).
Treating these schools like businesses is very harmful to the students who attend them. It makes
them more about making money than giving students a quality education. Most students who seek
higher education cannot afford it on their own. Many of them don't have wealthy families and
scholarships don't pay for as much as they used to so they have to work A LOT or take out a student

Reflection Paper On Getting On Course

  • 1. Reflection Paper On Getting On Course Joshua L. Simpson Mrs. Martiny SD – 140 – 01 November 29th, 2017 Reflection Paper Former United States President, Calvin Coolidge, once said, "If you see ten troubles coming down the road be sure that nine will run into the ditch before they reach you" (U.S President Calvin Coolidge). Throughout this semester the book Getting On Course showed many ways in order to have a great College life, by following simple techniques such as how to accept personal responsibility to developing emotional intelligence. All of these components play a huge role in a student's life in College. In this paper, I will dive deep in discussing the eight major components that each College student needs in order to succeed in College and live an easy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But there was one technique that I used to help me created motivation which was using the formula for motivation (V x E = M) which was Value (Value placed on education) times Expectation (Expectation for Success) = Motivation. I used this technique a lot during my first semester at St. Clair County Community College, it helped me gain the motivation I needed when going completing all of the Math homework that was assigned and all of the Health quizzes and papers that needed to be turned in on time. In conclusion, this component also showed how to design a compelling life plan which was how to set a goal, discover your dream, and also your life plan. It also showed you how to commit to your goals and dream and how to visualize your ideal future. All of these techniques have been proven to be very successful. All of these techniques will be always useful in my college life. The third component is Mastering Self–Management. This component played a huge role in my College life. The book showed many techniques on how to master self–management and I used one technique that helped me greatly and that was having a calendar. I wrote down all of my assignments, due dates, quizzes, tests, etc, on my calendar which I looked at daily throughout my semester and it helped me to keep on track with all of my school.

  • 4. Performance Funding : A Descriptive Study Performance Funding, A Descriptive Study During the years 1979 to 2007, 26 states enacted performance funding (Harnisch 2011). According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, today 33 states use performance based funding as a source of determination for their higher education institutions. Locally, the state of Louisiana is not exempt. According to senate bill 337, the higher education commissioner must submit a proposal for outcome based funding by the end of 2015 to the Board of Regents for approval. Performance based funds are often used across the United States thus understanding this mandate is critical to the continued success of higher education institutions. The research shows both the positive and negative outcomes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dougherty notes that the "First wave of performance funding adoption began in Tennessee in 1979, and ended in 2000, when a recession struck and caused a sharp decline in new program adoptions and the discontinuation of many existing programs. It seemed as if performance funding had been but a passing fancy. However, beginning in 2007, another wave of performance funding arose. The first–wave programs typically involved a bonus for higher education institutions above base state funding. The performance funding bonus was relatively small, between 1 and 6 percent of base state funding for public higher education" (Dougherty and Reddy 201). This policy has been labeled "performance funding 1.0". "The second wave of performance funding began in 2007 with two–thirds of these new programs being re–adoptions of discontinued first–wave programs. In about two–fifths of these wave 2 programs, performance funding typically did not take the form of a bonus on top of regular state funding. Rather, performance funding dollars were embedded in the base state funding for higher education. This has been dubbed "performance funding 2.0" (Dougherty and Reddy 2013). As noted by Friedel, Performance 1.0 emphasized outcome measures such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Tech Prep Essay Tech Prep Although the development and implementation of tech prep education programs have been in process since the initiation of the Carl D. Perkins Act Amendments of 1990, misconceptions about tech prep education still exist. As defined in provisions authorizing Perkins funds for tech prep, a tech prep education program is a combined secondary and postsecondary program that– leads to an associate degree or two–year certificate; provides technical preparation in at least one field of engineering technology; applied science, mechanical, industrial, or practical art or trade; or agriculture, health or business; builds student competence in mathematics, science, and communications (including applied academics) through a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the integration of academic and vocational education offers one strategy for developing the academic and technical competence of students, it does not constitute tech prep. Tech prep requires not only new courses and a sequenced core curriculum, but courses that take into account the learning styles of the majority of students, incorporating concepts like that of contextual learning. According to Hull (1993), contextual learning "occurs only when students process new information or knowledge in such a way that it makes sense to them in their frame of reference (their own inner world of memory, experience, and response)" (p. 41). Thus, the applied academics approach to learning, which involves the teaching of solid academic content by means of hands–on and vocational applications, follows the contextual learning concept in that it provides for learning in the context of life experiences–building on what the students already know and applying learning in the context of how the knowledge/information can be used in the context of exploration, discovery, and invention (ibid.). One of the goals of applied academic curriculum is that it should enable students to transfer knowledge from academic content to vocational applications and from school to the workplace. To ensure a curriculum that will prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for work in a technologically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Curriculum design & Inclusive Practices Curriculum Design for inclusive Practice In this assignment, I will be discussing what curriculum means, who and what factors can influence and impact the design of curriculum. Also defining the main theories models and ideologies and how they contribute to my curriculum, and how they can change various teaching methods. Concluding with, proposed solutions to improve the curriculum within the Hospitality department. Curriculum is hardly new in fact it dates way back to ancient Greece and the famous Aristotle's (384BC– 322BC) who was a Greek philosopher. A student of Plato came up with the categorisation of knowledge, which I will be discussing later on in the commentary. So curriculum has been around for years, but the way we understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Product Model – This model is interested in the product of the curriculum: just what does it equip a learner to do? Tanner and Tanner (1980) argue that this model has been the most dominant model of the twentieth century. However CALLAHAN in the 1970's with his instrumentalism ideology of skilling the learner to be fit for work, stated 'To the teacher, I would say that you must satisfy the parents and industry that what you are doing meets the requirements and the needs of our children' (TES Magazine, 11/10/1996) From the Rusken College speech in 1976, a whole new approach to education was to be invented and from this came the introduction of the craft based qualifications, his idea of the government putting money into education and seeing very little return, made him concentrate on making people fit for work, in turn helping the economy and paying the government back on their investment. This is the main model used in my specialised curriculum. One of the attractions of this approach to curriculum theory is that it involves detailed attention to what people need to know in order for it to work. • 10. The Benefits Of Going To A Community College According to Jenkins and Fink, the writers for the Community College Research Center, an average of 38% of community colleges students transfer to a 4 year college and 42% of the students complete a bachelor's degree within the next 6 years. Going to a community college is very beneficial and affordable to children with high or low income. While I am taking Economics my teacher broke down the concepts and benefits of going to a community college versus a university. For example, going to Moraine Valley Community College is about $3,570 a year for their tuition, while the University of Illinois is around $15,686 in tution. If you go to Moraine Valley Community College for 2 years you will only be paying about $7,140 versus going to the University of Illinois for 2 years and paying $31,372 Your saving $24,232 dollars if you go to a 2 year college versus going the whole 4 years. If people are struggling financially this can be a financial advantage. Some junior colleges cost less than two–thousand dollars each semester for students who attend full time and it gives students some time to prepare for a 4 year university if they plan on taking their education further. Going to a community college helps students to set goals and aspects for their future career they want to pursue to transfer to a university. So why doesn't Joliet West counselors promote the idea of going to a community college? Audience: Students who may not know much about going to a community college may think ... • 12. Primary Characteristics Of A Learning Centered College Objective Two: Program Redesign One of the four primary characteristics of a learning–centered college is that the college assesses its effectiveness in relation to student learning (the Learning–centered Center College–Camosun College, n.d.). Currently Blue Community College has 12 special programs that aid in the process of ensuring the college is learning–centered. The variations of these programs are beneficial to the needs and interest of all students. It is important to identify and assess if these programs are current and relevant to the average student. Through my consultation, I have identified that in order for the college to adopt the characteristics needed to become learning–centered, the primary focus has to be assessing student learning. Learning outcome assessments will provide Blue Community College with accountability and transparency to ensure that the institution is providing all measures to guarantee student success. The assessments can also provide insight into the opportunities and challenges that are unique to each student and identify the relevancy of these programs. Blue Community College currently utilizes a program map for its students called a Student Plan. The student plan allows students to select their own course schedule; however, it provides an outline of the course sequence. It is imperative to ensure that the needs of the students are considered when creating an educational map. A through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Postsecondary State Policy Network The readings from "The Postsecondary State Policy Network", led by Jobs for the Future, is a multistate partnership that is assists states in setting policies that will lead to student success and completion. The supporters of this initiative are Achieving the Dream, Completion by Design and Student Success Center. The primary focus is supporting structured student pathways from connection to college through completion. The four pathways are connection, entry, progress and completion (2014). I agreed with this initiative and believe the network is well needed, and is committed to help states create legislative policies that recognize the need for institutional reform strategies. By doing so it helps institutions provide structured pathways through college for more students, while assisting students enroll efficiently in programs of study that the student wants to pursue, and keep them engaged and progressing until they complete their degree or certificate to compete in the job market (2014). As an Educator having a program like this at Bergen Community College is essential for many of the students that struggle with academic success and completion. This program in collaboration with our already existing ATD would be ideal and would help to set standards and policies that are very much needed. The College Promise is a national, nonpartisan, local and state led higher education initiative that works together with leaders from the business community, philanthropy, higher ... The Mission Of Community Colleges Introduction The purpose of this research paper is to explore the altered missions of community colleges and related impacts on the historical mission of community colleges. The mission of community colleges were intended to serve all individuals with an equal opportunity for higher education access. In this research paper, there will be four guided questions: 1. What was the original mission of community colleges? 2. How has the community colleges mission changed over time? 3. How did the organizational culture impact the community colleges? 4. What are societal factors impacted when community colleges decided to change their mission? Since there are four guided questions to help address the main research question. There will also be some subtopics to help us better understand the reasoning toward the altered mission of community colleges. First, I will discuss about the first community college founded in American history of higher education and its mission, the influences on community college mission during the Depression era, and the intention of community college mission after the World War II era. Second, I will report what I have found about the impact on community college to alter their institution from a 2 years institution to a 4 years institution. • 18. Dual European School Systems : Dual And Differentiated... Dual European School Systems The European nation has taken a new initiative toward changing the traditional school systems that we see in place throughout the world. There are multiple diverse organizational methods that the countries in Europe are testing for the most effective method of creating students who are prepped for the work force. The types of organization are split into Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and the compulsory education (European Commission 5). However, the focus will be on the different compulsory education pathways. These include single structure, common core, and dual/differentiated education. The single structure focuses on general education through a single school path with no transitions, while the common core curriculum provision creates a more universal system of completion of one level of education before moving to the next general education level (European Commission 6). These said education levels were updated in 2011 and named the International Standard Classification of Education or ISCED. The levels start with ISCED 0, Early Childhood Education and Care, and finish with ISCED 7, Master's degree or Equivalent (European Commission 10). For compulsory education the ISCED levels utilized are ISCED 2, Lower secondary education, and ISCED 3, Upper secondary education. Although the European school system has three different organization patterns following the ISCED guidelines, the dual organization system has set out to change the ... • 20. The World Is Flat, By Thomas Friedman In our world of a frequently mutable economy, there is no such thing as a sure thing. The rollercoaster effect of falling and rising expenses and needs for jobs are continuously changing as our times become more and more digital. Americans are finding that the life they cherish so dearly may be gone in a matter of seconds. Most however, lack the concept of why everything seems to be slipping away. People have become too comfortable riding of the coat tails of innovators that paved the way before them and they are finding themselves lost in the shuffle. The rest of the world is catching up and in the words of Thomas Friedman, in The World is Flat, "[we] simply are not educating, or even interesting, enough of our own young people in advanced math, science, and engineering" (349). Therefore, we must combat this issue at hand. America has grown idle due to the achievements of previous ideas and although we have been amusing ourselves, bathing in our own narcissism, we are no longer at the top, no longer a positive anomaly. We aren't producing skilled and knowledgeable workers to keep our superiority, which is a direct result of an extremely problematic education system. Thus, in order to repair the damages done and the severe amount of problems in the American education system, a better functioning national system of higher education must be established. I suggest that vocational/technological schools should be combined to join in with the free community college proposal. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. History of Community Colleges in the United States Community colleges in the United States develop rapidly and have become a vital component of the postsecondary education delivery system. As of 2011–2012 school year, 45% of all undergraduate students were enrolled in public two–year colleges, approximately 8.3 million students (Knapp et al., 2012. Cited by AACC Fast Facts). And it seems that with globalization and Obama's education agenda, the trend of growing enrollment in community colleges won't change. A high school graduate who decides to pursue postsecondary education may face with a dilemma––whether enroll in a community college or a traditional four–year college. Even within a community college, a student may be faced with a choice–enroll in a vocational program and enter workforce after graduation with a vocational certification, or choose an academic program with an intention of transferring to four–year institutions. This paper will first give a brief introduction on community college in the United States–its past and present. Then it will examine four main purposes for students attending a community college today. In the next part, an economic comparison between community college and four–year university will be given with a focus on two specific programs. At last, implication and conclusion will be presented. The past and present of community college "The two–year college has been a distinctively American creation, and nowhere else has it attained such prominence" (Brint & Karabel, 1989). • 24. The First Law Passed By The Massachusetts Bay Colony 1. PAST LEGISLATION In the mid 1600's, the first law passed by the Massachusetts Bay Colony mandated that children start learning the fundamental of education; learn basic reading and writing by reading the bible and the town's laws. It was believed that for the success and evolution of the world and specifically their colony, children needed to be educated and knowledgeable. Furthermore, to strengthen the educational foundation that was forming and with some resistance from parents, a law was passed in 1647 commissioning the towns create and maintain public schools. Moving forward, Smith–Hughes Act of 1917 commissioned federal revenue to create and support of secondary and postsecondary vocational training. Emphasis were placed on instruction in agriculture, home economics, and trades and industry. This act along with the demand for change and other outlets for education, open the doors for trades that prepared people for jobs. Legislation during this time contended that this was the best step moving forward to focus on skills to ensure people were workplace ready. Several years later in 1958, the National Defense Education Act contributed additional federal dollars to the schools to raise awareness and to heighten the fundamental importance and priority to focus on STEM. STEM provides instructions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. It is near impossible to afford the cost of living while earning entry–level wages. The job market has become hostile, and it has gotten to the point that one must have formal training or a marketable education in order to obtain a stable position that offers decent wages. With this realization, many people have decided to go to college. Those that are in the market for a college education face many choices. The most common: community colleges, which do not make a profit, and technical schools or online schools, which are in the business to make a profit. These schools are called for–profit schools. She convinced me I would be better in the medical field by boasting about how intelligent I appeared, and she knew I was going to be exceptionally successful in the medical assistant program. She was sure to inform me that if I struggled, it would not be a problem because they had a very maternal staff whose main concern was–me. • 28. The Legislative Movement : Subsidize The College Education... The legislative movement to subsidize the college education of undocumented students has been accredited to the state of Texas, which in 2001 took legislative action (House Bill 1403) and enacted an in–state tuition policy that allowed undocumented students to pay in–state tuition rates like any other state resident, moreover, it assisted these students with state financial support (Drachman, 2006; Flores, 2010b, Dickson and Pender, 2013). From that point forward other states have taking similar legislative steps to subsidize the postsecondary education of undocumented students within their borders. In California, Assembly Bill (AB 540) was signed into law that same year (Abrego, 2008). However, as Flores (2010b) explains while states like California took initiative to subsidize higher education for undocumented students they failed to provide in–state financial aid to support these students. To date, only six states (California, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and Washington) provide undocumented student with monetary assistance (NCSL). While under "title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965" undocumented students are currently forbidden to use federal monies to fund their postsecondary education (Drachman, 2006:91). When considering that most undocumented students come from poor families, and that their situation is comparable to that of low–income, first generation college students, who often cannot afford to pay educational fees (Kaushal, 2008; Diaz–Strong, ... • 34. College Education Is The Best Time Of A Person 's Life Having a college education is considered a must for success in the real world and it is an archaic and much believed thought that college education is associated with a successful life. College education is a necessity for living up to the standards of the world and is necessary for shaping a literate and well–informed society. College teaches people things that the real world will probably not hence it becomes obligatory that after passing high school, students need to obtain a college degree. Where there are many people who disagree with the concept of having a college degree and spending a fortune on college education because it has nothing to do with success, there are others who willfully agree that college is undoubtedly the best time of a person's life and college teaches lessons that one carries with them all lifelong. There are two sides of the argument; in favor of college education and one that goes against it. Those that oppose college are people who feel that it is burden and waste of economic resources and it needs to be skipped out from the lives of the people who need to get acquainted with the real world as soon as they can because college life and education are a loud cry from reality and it doesn't really help when it comes to obtaining a good occupation or even the part of making it through the three–four years of college. Traditional Programs For Academic Mentors And Mentees Are Traditional programs for academic mentors and mentees are based on a seasoned professional working with an in–experienced teacher, and there is a plethora of case studies and literature reviews on such mentoring relationships. The idea of mentoring harkens back to Classical Greek literature wherein Homer introduces his readers to the inept character of Mentor (Zellers, Howard, & Barcic, 2008), so it is with a sense of irony that the term mentor is used to describe the experienced member of such a team. During the fall term in–service, the four of core members met with the Vice President of Instruction (VPI) and discussed the main outcome for the fourteen newly hired faculty members. The main outcome was to help the newly hired faculty assimilate into the culture of the college and the small, rural, isolated community, so they would be more apt to stay if their first year evaluations revealed that their work was up to the college's standards. The advantages were to be two fold because this type of program should not only help retention of faculty for the college, but it would also benefit the mentees; "Benefits [of mentoring] to proteges in both business and academic include rapid assimilation to the organizational culture . . . higher career satisfaction . . . increased probability of success . . ." I believe education is the way to be a better person, and it is the key to being who you want to be. My dream is to be a doctor; however, I have limited resources. My parents did not have money to send me to college. I am currently getting a loan for my associate degree. I am concern about the amount of money I am going to pay back on the loan after I graduate. This is making me anxious and is limiting my likelihood to continue post– associate degree. I know many people who are in the same situation. Many people drop out from college, and many also choose not to seek college education just because of the expensive tuition. That's why I am proposing free college tuition and fees for all Americans, so that students from poor families can also seek college education without financial worries, so that student can focus on learning, and so that graduates can start their various careers free of debt or without significant debt in order to focus on developing the economy. Essay on The American Economy: Profit Over People In the face of a changing and more globalized economy, a new emphasis has been placed on the pursuit of higher education in the United States. A sense of desperation abounds as competition and economic uncertainty drive individuals to pursue more lucrative and stable paths, to which education supposedly holds the key. Consequently, attendance at colleges and universities has become a necessity in the view of many Americans. This push for higher education has consequences for society that have been expounded in the work of Paulo Freire, and his theories regarding education and oppression in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. In his work, Freire frames education as a great equalizer and a means by which the oppressed may "liberate themselves and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children, and their performance, are turned into a commodity in this impersonalized system, which does not encourage quality learning, but rather, quantifiable performance. Paul Taylor of the Pew Research Center, on NPR's All Things Considered, stated that "in a modern, knowledge–based economy, the only thing more expensive than going to college is not going to college." This applies to our economy today. A recent Pew Research study showed that millennials with a high school diploma make only 62% of what college graduates make. In addition, the study revealed that 86% of college graduates say they have a "career–track" job, compared to 57% of high school graduates. Such numbers indicate the importance that receiving a college education can have. However, the economic necessity of education in our country seems to further distance education from a "liberating" structure. When it comes to our universities, economics, too, has an increasing influence. In fact, higher education itself is an industry, one that is becoming more exclusive as expenses increase, especially at top universities. This review focuses on the history and struggles of women in higher education, male dominance, and African American women who have become successful in leadership roles. Some of the literature reviewed suggests that if efforts are not made to support the upward mount of African American women in leadership positions, the possibility of the decrease in this population is inevitable. Undocumented Students Access For Public Higher Education Undocumented Student Access to Public Higher Education Elizabeth Fava Florida International University EDH 6055: Access and Choice in US Higher Education Approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants are currently living in the U.S., an estimated 2.3 million undocumented students are in the U.S. K–12 system and yet only an estimated 65,000 graduate from high school (Jauregui, Slate, & Stallone Brown, 2008; Diaz–Strong, Gomez, Luna– Duarte, & Meiners, 2011). Of those 65,000 students, only 5–10% will go on to pursue any kind of postsecondary degree (Herrera, Garibay, Garcia, & Johnston, 2013). The issues and implications of these numbers clearly frame two issues surrounding access policy for postsecondary attainment: how can institutions of higher education assist this student population and can institutions of higher education ethically serve this population. These are issues that directly affect access to higher education for this population, as well as choice of institution to attend. History and Background of Access to Education for Undocumented Students The U.S. Supreme Court case, Plyler v. Doe (1982) created legal protection of undocumented students to receive a free K–12 education in the United States that is still upheld today (Olivas, 2009). With the European tracking system, referred to as university or academic/vocational streaming, according to Chmielewski (2014), it is the students who are tracked, not their courses (p.293). In this system, students do not take the same classes as their peers in other tracks. The curriculum and classes depends on the track they are on. Also, a group of studies found that for academic/vocational tracking countries socioeconomic status (SES) is highly predictive of track placement (Chmielewski, 2014, p. 298). A contributing factor to this notion is that fact that this type of tracking begins when students are much younger than with course–by–course tracking. Luxembourg School System In Luxembourg, the educational structure is an intricate system that begins with students attending primary grade cycles 1–4. According to Shiveley's resource on Luxembourgian educational system (2016b), each cycle lasts two years and students can be held back in cycle 1–3 depending on their performance and maturity. Once students complete cycle four, around age 10–12, they move onto orientation cycle that is similar to the U.S. equivalence of middle school. After this, they will advance to secondary grade cycles. Within the orientation and secondary grade cycles, students are tracked and take differing course loads depending on their academic performance. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. Tuition Cost Solution For College Tuition is what most high graduates worry about for college. It is a topic that is mentioned in the news, presidential debates, and amongst students. Some would argue that college cannot be completely free but that it should be lowered to reasonable price that can make college more affordable and easier access to low income families. Others oppose this standpoint by stating that the decrease in tuition would also decrease the quality of education that many are paying thousands of dollars for. Should tuition cost decrease or remain the same? Tuition effects billions of students in the United States today. College is expensive for it does not cover books, fees, rides, food, room and board. Which is the main reason why college students and parents advocate that tuition should be lowered because there are so many other expenses. If college would lower tuition then it would be more accessible to low income families. This is proven by the statistics that The Christian Monitor (2009) has provided; In 1998, the share of American 25–to–34–year–olds holding a bachelor's degree was rising, and the US was tied for first place with South Korea. Since 2000, that share has slipped, with America falling to seventh place...Obama wants America to get back on top with college graduates by 2020. President Obama 's State Of The Union Address One of the most highly debated proposals from President Barack Obama's State of the Union address is a new government program that would cover the cost of community college. The "American College Promise" would provide free tuition to students who enroll in a community college for at least half–time, maintain a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA), make steady progress towards completing an associate's degree and cannot have an adjusted gross income of above two hundred thousand dollars. Obama has stated that the new proposal will benefit roughly nine million students each year by earning them an associate's degree at no cost. Although the new proposal can be seen as a panacea for all incoming college students, the opposition is true due to the fact that community college is affordable, exclusive, and will hurt the economy by causing the current United States debt to increase. Many critiques against community college being tuition free state that our economy will improve. This is being proven by Wyner who states that it is necessary to close the percentage gap of jobs that will require a college education. Yes, it is true that a college education will be required for 60% of jobs, it doesn't mean that community college should be free. If anything, making college free, will affect the economy . Almost all of the inventions that make our life easier today are the outcome of education. Some students will do whatever they can to make sure they end up in one of these places. Higher education has been a very important topic for students and their families: some believe that the cost of higher education is too high; others argue that it is not, and also those who thinks there is no real outcome to higher education. There are many people who believe that the cost of college is very high. The rising cost of college may put higher education out of reach for the average American. In the public four–year sector, the increase in published tuition and fees from $2,810 (in 2014 dollars) in 1984–85 to $9,139 in 2014– 15 is an increase of 225%, or 4.0% per year over 30 years. The increase over the most recent five years, from 2009–10 to 2014–15, was 17%, or 3.2% per year (collegeboard.com). The cost has increased tremendously in the past few decades thus resulting in lower attendants. Many students are missing out because of the cost and lack of financial aid. Though there are many scholarships available nowadays for students, it may not be enough for their budget for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Adult Arts Learning Essay Adult Arts Learning The motivations and objectives of both providers and participants in adult arts learning are diverse. Adult educators seeking to foster transformative learning invoke the role of imagination in developing new perspectives; they view the arts as a way of engaging adults in imaginative exploration of themselves and their relationship to the world (Dirkx 2000; Kazemek and Rigg 1997). In adult literacy education, analysis of paintings and poems can be a means of developing visual and linguistic acuity, critical thinking, and aesthetic judgment (Dreybus 2000; Kazemek and Rigg 1997). Greene (in Elias, Jones, and Normie 1995) speaks of aesthetic education as a form of critical literacy to empower people to read and name ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 107). Such therapeutic benefits of creative activity are often an important motivation for arts participation. In Bardsley and Soskice's (1998) survey, one–third of adult arts learners sought job– related skills, but the majority were motivated by increased confidence, maintenance of physical and mental abilities, and recovery from loss or illness. Similarly, in a music appreciation course, two– thirds of adult participants cited therapeutic motivations such as coping with stress (Buell in Jones, McConnell, and Normie 1996). These examples involve different providers: adult educators (Dirkx, Dreybus, Kazemek and Rigg), artists/arts educators working with adults (Apol and Kambour, Buell), and educators using the arts in other subject areas (Alburty). In addition, a great deal of adult arts learning takes place formally and informally in museums, parks, galleries, theatres, and similar venues, organizations that may not view their role as primarily educative (Chadwick and Stannett 2000). With many different providers, there are multiple, sometimes competing, purposes for adult arts education. Is it to develop the individual, to maintain the dominant culture, or to change the culture (Elias et al. 1995)? Is it to develop appreciative audiences or creative practitioners (McDaniel and Thorn 1997)? To liberate creativity or to develop technical skills (Milton in Elias et al. 1995)? Is art the means or a goal in itself; that is, are the arts used for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. The Multidimensional Nature Of Globalization The multidimensional nature of globalization impacts citizens of the world in many ways. This study will focus specifically on the effects of globalization on higher education with particular emphasis on the rural community college and the employers served by this segment of the American education system. Globalization is not a new concept in higher education; however, the impact of globalization and its affect on rural communities is becoming more apparent. "The impact of globalization, both in terms of the opportunities it affords and the challenges it presents, is now a well–established feature of economic development. Due to increased openness in markets, economies can no longer depend on protection from global competition" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the community college in advancing these globalization efforts, and, in particular, the small, rural community college, is less defined and has not been researched to the extent that it has at the university and K–12 levels. This chapter begins by providing the background and context of globalization as a workplace issue; followed by the problem statement; purpose of the study; and research questions that the study is striving to address. Concluding the chapter are common terminology definitions used throughout the study. Background and Context Americans are entering a workforce that is changing at a rapid pace. Global competition affecting both businesses/organizations and workers; labor shortages; and the documented skills gap are all factors that have led to a rapidly changing work environment. Due to these changes, workers are expected to change and adapt to this global environment. "Education and training needed to prepare students to be globally competent lacks clarity, uniformity, and direction" (Hunter, 2004). Dellow (2007) goes on to say that globalization has and will continue to affect our nation's labor market. Worker training and retraining due to offshoring and outsourcing of American jobs, along with the creation of new jobs, will require workers to be able to adjust and adapt to these changes within their communities. To keep pace and prepare ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Community College Education Should Not Be Tuition Free Community College Education Should Not Be Tuition Free Every year, millions of students graduate from high school and consider studying in community college. The main reason for them to choose community colleges over four–year universities is the affordable tuition, or they have undecided majors for their careers. Unfortunately, an academic article published in 2014 "How to Help College Students Graduate," Kirp demonstrated, "American students are enrolling college in record numbers, but they are also dropping out in droves" (Par1). Kirp also claimed that "only one third of community college students graduate" (Par1). In January, 2015, President Obama has proposed to spend more than $60 billion over the next ten years making community college tuition free for the purpose of increasing the graduation rates (The Editorial Board Par2). The proposal seems particularly well–suited in supporting college enrollment; however, from the economic perspective and the cultural perspective, community college education should not be tuition free. First of all, offering free college education is not feasible or practical. In fact, community colleges have been serving a wide variety of students in different age ranges. In other words, students who are teenagers, working adults, or retirees can attend community colleges. There is no doubt that college enrollment would rapidly improve since students would be attracted by the free courses, but it still does not seem to increase the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education Essay The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education With the passage of the 1988 Family Support Act (FSA), adult basic and literacy education was linked to welfare reform. Based on experimentation with welfare reform during the previous decade, the FSA created the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training Program (JOBS). JOBS, which requires states to make educational services available to welfare recipients, was created in response to the general consensus that welfare recipients are not well prepared to enter the work force (Cohen et al. 1994). One of its major underlying assumptions is "that a strong foundation of literacy and basic skills is critical to the successful transition to employment and self–sufficiency for AFDC ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of this research is based on experiments with welfare–to–work programs leading up to the FSA (e.g., California's Greater Avenues for Independence [GAIN] program), but much of it deals directly with the experiences of providing adult basic and literacy education to JOBS participants. This Practice Application Briefreviews some of these research findings and describes their implications for practice. What Does the Research Say? Evaluation studies of employment and training programs, including the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), and JOBS, are one body of research that can inform practice. This research has been conducted over the past 20 years primarily on demonstration programs designed to improve the basic skills and employability of disadvantaged adults. A synthesis (Cohen et al. 1994) of this research resulted in the following conclusions that have a bearing on the role of adult basic and literacy education in welfare–to–work programs: Because they use traditional pedagogical approaches for which many adults have little tolerance, adult basic and literacy education programs have experienced difficulty attracting and retaining participants. Furthermore, many low–skilled adults see no connection between this traditional approach and their primary goal of getting a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. High School Schools Are More Than Other Forms Of College Most of the general populous seeks some form of higher education after high school. The big dream is to attend an IV league school and get scholarships to pay for all of it but the reality is that that is not attainable for most of the people in this country. Some people go to local colleges instead. They are more affordable and they offer about the same degree of training at least for basic classes that the four year schools offer. Although community colleges are so helpful to many people and much more affordable than other forms of college; they cannot take in everyone. Some schools offer online programs, but not as many as in class. That is where for–profit colleges come in. For–profit colleges offer schooling for the students that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many students who attend these for–profit institutions are lured in with promises of gainful employment and job placement but by the time they realize that it will not work out it is already too late for them. Three women who graduated from Everest College were told that they would be making twenty five to thirty five dollars an hour (College Inc.). These women were also told that the college would place them in a job because they had big connections and that sounded really good to them so they signed up (College Inc.). "Despite graduating and getting licenses, all three women have struggled to find jobs, they claim they didn 't have the right training. In fact, they were given no practical experience in hospitals, as they were promised, they were only given training in nursing homes and health clinics" (College Inc.). "These women, along with ten other students in their class, want their money back and are considering filing a lawsuit against the school" (College Inc.). Treating these schools like businesses is very harmful to the students who attend them. It makes them more about making money than giving students a quality education. Most students who seek higher education cannot afford it on their own. Many of them don't have wealthy families and scholarships don't pay for as much as they used to so they have to work A LOT or take out a student loan of some type. More times than not, students will end up seeking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
