The user’s perception of speed is everything
● Focus on how quickly above-the-fold content appears on the screen (FMP).
● Look at the time it takes for hero content and key elements for onward
user journeys to become interactive (TTI).
● Critical rendering path optimisation - identifying render-blocking
resources that prevent important pixels from being painted to the screen.
Optimising for different devices
● Leverage the ‘Audience’ tab in Google Analytics to get an understanding of
the different device types and browsers accessing your site.
● Use progressive enhancement to optimise for the lowest quality CPU and
device type to ensure they can still access crucial content.

Optimising for different journeys
● Use resource hints like preload, prefetch and preconnect to fetch key links
and resources more quickly.
● Guess.js can be used to model user journeys and prefetch the pages a
user is most likely to visit next, so the next page loads immediately.
Optimising for different connection types
● Use the Network Information API to monitor the user’s connectivity and
serve lower file size content accordingly.
● For example, if the user is on 4G, a video can be served, but if they are on
2G you can serve a static image instead.
● The user won’t know that they’re missing out on anything.

Top Tips from Rachel Costello The user’s perception of speed is everything ● Focus on how quickly above-the-fold content appears on the screen (FMP). ● Look at the time it takes for hero content and key elements for onward user journeys to become interactive (TTI). ● Critical rendering path optimisation - identifying render-blocking resources that prevent important pixels from being painted to the screen. Optimising for different devices ● Leverage the ‘Audience’ tab in Google Analytics to get an understanding of the different device types and browsers accessing your site. ● Use progressive enhancement to optimise for the lowest quality CPU and device type to ensure they can still access crucial content.

Top Tips from Rachel Costello Optimising for different journeys ● Use resource hints like preload, prefetch and preconnect to fetch key links and resources more quickly. ● Guess.js can be used to model user journeys and prefetch the pages a user is most likely to visit next, so the next page loads immediately. Optimising for different connection types ● Use the Network Information API to monitor the user’s connectivity and serve lower file size content accordingly. ● For example, if the user is on 4G, a video can be served, but if they are on 2G you can serve a static image instead. ● The user won’t know that they’re missing out on anything.
