Observational Study Designs
A clinical pediatric nurse has noticed a rise in childhood cancer diagnoses among the Hispanic population served by the local clinic. The nurse is concerned about this increase in cancer incidence in the patient population and turns to the literature to explore current research on this topic. The nurse finds through the reading that there appears to be an association between parental smoking and childhood cancer and wonders if this could be the cause of the rise in cases.
This type of suspected association between a risk factor (exposure) and a particular outcome (childhood cancer) can be evaluated using an observational study design. This week, you were introduced to observational study designs used in epidemiology. For this Discussion, you will identify an epidemiologic association of interest (e.g., smoking and lung cancer, obesity and heart disease, hormone replacement/modification therapy and breast cancer) and determine an appropriate observational study design for exploring that association.
To prepare:
Review the different types of observational study designs presented in the Learning Resources: ecologic, cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort.
Carefully examine the characteristics, strengths, and limitations of each design.
Consider an association between a risk factor and a particular health outcome that is of interest to you. Then, select the observational study design you think would be the most appropriate for exploring this association.
Consider how using observational study designs can lead to improvements in population health.

Introduction
Introduction
To understand how to best address the needs of vulnerable populations, research must be conducted. The type of research used to study special populations in America’s health care system falls into three broad categories. Descriptive research
focuses on identifying those most at risk and the methods of identifying these groups and
their needs—for example, identifying which youth are most at risk for violent behavior.
Analytic research focuses on iden-
tifying the reasons for vulnerability
and ways to prevent and remediate
vulnerability, so it is used to iden-
tify why certain youth have higher
risks of violent behavior than others.
Evaluative research helps determine
the success of existing programs that
aim to provide services to vulner-
able groups—meaning that evalu-
ative research asks such questions
as, “What programs are effective at
addressing the needs of youth iden-
tified as being at risk for violent
behavior?”
Each research category serves an
important purpose; However, more
integration between research types
and studies would help improve
the understanding of vulnerability
as well as the programs that serve
America’s most vulnerable. The research associated with vulnerable populations is often
fragmented, in that studies often look at one particular issue or group but do not always
consider the connections that exist across issues and populations.

Critique of Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Method Design
Both quantitative and qualitative methods play a pivotal role in nursing research. Qualitative research helps nurses and other healthcare workers to understand the experiences of the patients on health and illness. Quantitative data allows researchers to use an accurate approach in data collection and analysis. When using quantitative techniques, data can be analyzed using either descriptive statistics or inferential statistics which allows the researchers to derive important facts like demographics, preference trends, and differences between the groups. The paper comprehensively critiques quantitative and quantitative techniques of research. Furthermore, the author will also give reasons as to why qualitative methods should be regarded as scientific.
The overall value of quantitative and Qualitative Research
Quantitative studies allow the researchers to present data in terms of numbers. Since data is in numeric form, researchers can apply statistical techniques in analyzing it. These include descriptive statistics like mean, mode, median, standard deviation and inferential statistics such as ANOVA, t-tests, correlation and regression analysis. Statistical analysis allows us to derive important facts from data such as preference trends, demographics, and differences between groups. For instance, by conducting a mixed methods study to determine the feeding experiences of infants among teen mothers in North Carolina, Tucker and colleagues were able to compare breastfeeding trends among various population groups. The multiple groups compared were likely to initiate breastfeeding as follows: Hispanic teens 89%, Black American teens 41%, and White teens 52% (Tucker et al., 2011).
The high strength of quantitative analysis lies in providing data that is descriptive. The descriptive statistics helps us to capture a snapshot of the population. When analyzed appropriate, the descriptive data enables us to make general conclusions concerning the population. For instance, through detailed data analysis, Tucker and co-researchers were able to observe that there were a large number of adolescents who ceased breastfeeding within the first month drawing the need for nurses to conduct individualized follow-ups the early days after hospital discharge. These follow-ups would significantly assist in addressing the conventional technical problems and offer support in managing back to school transition (Tucker et al., 2011).
Qualitative research allows researchers to determine the client’s perspective on healthcare. It enables researchers to observe certain behaviors and experiences amo.

While in the womb fetus is in the it feeds off the food intake and nourishment through the
placenta, which also means that any substances such as drugs, alcohol or tobacco that enters the
mothers system flows through the placenta and is delivered to the fetus as well. From birth to three
years old is the most critical period in a child’s development process. Children of mothers that use
drugs while they are pregnant increase the likelihood that the child will suffer from some form of
birth defect and oftentimes born prematurely. The lasting effects of prenatal cocaine affect the
growth of the fetus physically. The results of the increase of premature birth, and generalized growth
retardation including decreased birth weight, shorter body length, and smaller head circumference
(Bigsby et al, 2011; Covington et al, 2002; Gouin et al, 2011; Mayes et al, 2003).
These toxic chemicals can sometimes have irreversible damage that affect the child’s normal
development process with regards to proper development of organs and brain function.
From the ages of 0-2 months old a child are expected to have develop motor skills that would
include the ability to recognize different colors and shapes, kicking waving, have the ability to
recognize familiar voices and their sleeping patterns would change, meaning that as they grow older
children should be sleeping a little longer than a new born baby. Children from the ages of 2
months old should be able to extend their arm and reach and pick up toys and other objects,
hand coordination by shifting objects from one hand to another. The child should be able to pick up
finger food and bring it to their mouths. Identifying a problem with a child is when they are not able
to perform these age appropriate task.
A toddler ages 3 to 5 years old should be able to perform task such as holding crayons drawing horizontal lines, circles and have the ability to fold and snip paper with scissors. Children that have been exposed to substance may struggle with completing these tasks or will develop these cognitive skills at a slower rate. One study using play behavior (Rodning, Beckwith, & Howard, 1989a) found that preterm toddlers exposed to cocaine
and other drugs to show poorly developed play behaviors, and a lack of interest and motivation in
unstructured situations, in comparison to a group of high risk preterm children. Using play behavior,
one study found preterm toddlers exposed to cocaine and other drugs to show poorly. However, by
3 years of age, there were no changes associated with fine motor performance or behavior observed
with the child externalizing behavioral problems at age 5 years old. Stress and psychological
symptoms of caregivers were found to be in direct correlation with increased child behavioral issues;
indicating that the effected children may have m.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
1. Reducing Anomia
The aim of Maddy, Capiluto & McComas (2014) was to review the research evaluating the effectiveness of
semantic feature analysis on reducing anomia in individuals with aphasia. They used seven databases to search for
articles, and seven terms. The author's search initially identified eighty–eight articles, eighteen of which were
relevant. The authors then focused on research that was experimental in nature, examined semantic feature analysis
as a treatment method, and included participants that were adults with neurological injury. Next, the parameters
included that the articles had to be written in English, and had to have been published in a peer–reviewed journal
from 1980 to June 2013. The authors did not include research that looked at semantic feature analysis in
combination with another treatment approach. This left the authors with a total of eleven articles to review.
Next, the research was examined for quality. Maddy et al. (2014) selected two speech–language pathologists to
review the research independently. Ten of the eleven studies were assessed using the Single Case Experimental
Design Scale. One study was not assessed using this method to due the fact it did not use a single subject research

(2014) then evaluated the efficacy of semantic feature analysis on reducing anomia by calculating the effect sizes of
the selected studies using Cohen's d. The authors also used the calculation of percent of non–overlapping data due
to the fact it was not possible to calculate Cohen's d. for all the studies. The effect size for the majority of
participants was small, indicating that semantic feature analysis did not result in significant improvement in word–
finding ability for these participants. Some of the participants did show medium or high effect size. When using the

literature has revealed that persistent infection with an oncogenic strain of HPV is the known cause of cervical
cancer and of the 40 HPV types that affect the genital area, at least 15 types are known to be oncogenic or cancer
causative (Armstrong, 2010). Based on clinical trials, HPV vaccination is effective against the occurrence of
precancerous lesions and according to Armstrong (2010), studies of the quadrivalent HPV vaccine revealed a 98%
protection against high–grade precancerous lesions, whereas for bivalent HPV vaccine 93% efficacy has been
demonstrated in females to HPV 16 and 18 who completed the 3–dose vaccine series prior to engaging in any type
of sexual actitivities. Cook & et al (2010), acknowledges that there is no research available on long term efficiency
of vaccines and also not everyone who initiates the vaccine series completes all 3 doses or completes all doses in
the recommended 6–month time frame; this noncompliance and

Finally, it will end with the opportunities and challenges that are facing China's libraries. Through this paper, we
will gain a general understanding of China's growing library system as they take steps to secure its advancement in
society. China's Libraries: The Influence of a Large Population China, a country with such a rich history, has long
been identified by its significantly large population. When one thinks of China some of the first images that come to
mind are the unique architecture, the traditional dress, splendid dynasties, internationally acclaimed philosophies,
and high educational standards. It was noted by Wasserstrom (2013) that the most emphasized moralities from the
Analects are education, ritual, and hierarchal relationships. These three important factors are such values that, to
this day, they have a significant influence on Chinese culture. In addition to its rich culture and values, this country
has the honor of holding the largest population in the world. The current population of this country is
1,370,940,000. Their population was growing at such a significant rate that following the year 1979, the country put
in place the "One–Child Family" policy. The general purpose of this policy is to limit the size of the Chinese family.
It should be noted that though its title states one child, in some cases families are allowed to have a second child.

25. Stealing Should Have Taught You Essay
When you were younger, your parents tried to teach you–or should have tried to teach you–that stealing is wrong
and could get you in trouble. The definition of stealing, according to Webster's dictionary, is to take another person's
property without permission or legal right without intending to return it. Another thing parents should have taught
you is the lesson on losing thing. "Don't misplace that, you might need it later!" or "Don't forget where that"
whatever it was "is!" and hopefully you learned! The definition of losing, this also according to Webster's
dictionary, is to be unable to find. What happens when you mix the two? See, to this day, I don't count it as stealing.
I swear I had the intention to return the book! I would never steal anything, especially not from a teacher. I wasn't

we had learned at the beginning of the year, was that we could "checkout" any book we wanted, one at a time, if we

Students would go up to her and ask, "May I borrow this book, Mrs. Fisher?" The answer was very rarely yes.
While I had asked her for a book a few times before, our regular school library lacking this book on their many

29. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Systematic Review
Introduction and Statement of the problem
The most important criterion that distinguishes and characterizes systemic reviews from other narrative reviews is
"being comprehensive ". That's why developing an explicit and comprehensive search strategy is considered a must
and an indispensable step of systematic reviews, failure to attain such step through searching all available channels
of information is a potential threat to the validity of the systematic review.
The information sources for systematic review comprise three main fold:
Academic bibliographic databases
Hand searching for printable journals, conferences and databases.
Informal channels for further data searching.
Limitations of quick searches:
Searching only one academic database suffers major shortcomings. First, that won't ensure retrieval of all relevant
literature, according to previous study only 30–80 % of the available studies will be retrieved during searching a
single database. Second, most databases tend to publish studies which shows effectiveness of interventions, not
adverse effects. And finally databases like Medline for example English articles represent most of the indexed
studies. To sum up searching a sole data bases will ends up with a systematic review that suffers selection bias,
language bias and publication bias.(Suarez–Almazor, Belseck, Homik, Dorgan, & ... Show more content on

Considering it's ease of use, simplicity and capability of obtaining a great number of relevant studies in a minimum
time. It's worth noting that electronic searching should be pertained mainly to academic databases like PubMed and
Cochrane central. The use of search engines like Google scholar, Intute and TRIP or publisher's website as springer
link and science direct should limited. Making a systematic review from articles obtained from such sources will
surely suffer publication and selection bias.(Higgins & Green,

experiences to kept the historical materials. Archivists have increasing opportunities for collaborations at
universities by trending affecting higher education today and understanding of varying experiences of archives
should only strengthen these collaborations through enabling clear communication. Moreover, archivists need to
reconsider and develop new approaches to the important issue of the use of archival material. Six approaches to this
challenges are suggested and discussed, developing better means of tracking research use, improving procedures for
interpreting and reporting on that use, promoting increased research use, emphasizing use as a means of garnering
program support, reaching out to the user community for assistance in dealing with certain archival issues and
expanding the concept of reference service to a broader notion of researcher service or public service. Last but not

54. The Effects Of Music Therapy On Patients With Cancer
Rhythm that produces sound whether by means of a voice or instrument can stir a feeling of joy or sorrow in a
human being. One of the earliest known complete music compositions dating from about 2nd century B.C., an
Epitaph believed to have been written by Seikilos himself while still alive. The (Seikilos) Epitaph has been
translated from the original Greek of that period as:
"As long as you live, shine feel no grief at all Life is short Life demands its toll" (Pilich).
The interesting fact about this composition is that the tempo is expressive of "religious solemnity" (Pilich).
Obviously one can comprehend the fact that music contains not only mere words but can foster certain emotions
that are associated with a particular piece of music.
Music therapy has proven beneficial to patients with cancer most notably the psychological and physical end–
results. More than one million people in the United States get cancer each year (cancer.org). Most have heard or
know of someone who has had cancer and the stories of the chemo radiation therapy that goes along with it.
Imagine the emotions that one feels when diagnosed with cancer. The patient is ultimately suffering from the whole
ordeal physically and emotionally. Music interventions are employed to "alleviate symptoms and treatment side
effects in cancer patients" (Cochrane review).
A recent study of music therapy interventions was conducted on 1,891 participants. The study was offered by music
therapists and medical staff.

58. Adnan's Guilty Analysis
From the evidence presented in the podcast and by the witnesses who claim to have seen Adnan Syed who can
come to the conclusion that these alibis are not valid because of inconsistencies and errors in the case. When it
comes to Adnan's supposed alibi at the library, there are several errors that invalidate Adnan's possible alibi. Asia
Mcclain claims that "she specifically remembers me being at the library, at the public library, right after school."
(Koenig 1) But the problem with that is later after she had written the affidavit for the trial, Asia invalidated her
original statement. "Asia had called one of the prosecutors in Adnan's case, a guy named Kevin Urick, and
undermined her own statement." (Koenig 1) According to Kevin Urick, "She was concerned, because she was being

She told me that she'd only written it because she was getting pressure from the family, and she basically wrote it to
please them and get them off her back." (Koenig 1) While discussing the alibi in the podcast Sarah Koenig came to
the conclusion of, "Because if he was, library equals innocent. It's so maddeningly simple." She's right, it is so
maddeningly simple because from the invalidated alibi, we can significantly prove that Adnan was not at the library
but instead committing the murder of Hae Min Lee.
Although you can claim the possible invalidation of Adnan's alibi, there is substantial and undeniable evidence from
other people supplying alibi's that proves that Adnan's alibi is not invalidated. In contrast to the possible
invalidation of Adnan's alibi, Adnan could have been at the library all afternoon as well as Hae at the school since
the state's timeline has some errors. So if we assume that Adnan was at the public library from 2:15–3:30 and at
track practice from 3:30– to about 4:30 or 5:30 like he claims in his timeline, then we know that it is impossible for

78. College Essay : An Ideal College
An Essay on An Ideal College
Everyone has or should have an ideal; something which he can look forward to, of which he may dream, and for
which he may strive. In our colleges we come across many defects or limitations. We often discuss these among
ourselves. And in course of these discussions, and as a result of them, we come to cherish a vague notion of what
would be an ideal college, at last, what we would regard as an ideal. Here of course I speak mostly for myself.
An ideal college, in my opinion, should consist of a building with well–lighted and spacious rooms, an extensive
playground, well–equipped libraries and laboratories, and learned teachers. These are essential, and so I will discuss
these first.
On the academic side an ideal college should have two kinds of rooms: lecture–rooms and tutorial rooms. Lecture–
rooms should be large enough to accommodate even two to three hundred students without crowding. In these days
of amplifiers, large classes should offer no real difficulty. Only three must be plenty of light and air to prevent
stuffiness. The acoustic arrangements must be such as to put no undue strain on a lecturer's voice. Tutorial rooms
should be spacious enough to accommodate small classes of ten or fifteen students. Too many lectures are apt to
become monotonous and boring. It would be deal if the ground covered by a lecture broadly is once again reviewed
in the tutorial classes in greater detail and with an eye to individual difficulties of students.

Thomas Cochrane was born on December 14, 1775 in Annsfield, Scotland. He was the eldest son of Archibald and

schooling, which taught him to be self–reliant and practical. Thomas shared his eccentricity and intellectual
curiosity with his father, a scientist and inventor. In November of 1784, Anna Cochrane passed away. Soon after,
Thomas was sent to Mr. Chauvet's military academy in Kensington, London. His father had secured this role for

Thetis as acting second lieutenant and waited for an official promotion. These skills allowed Thomas to take the

Resolution. It was an extremely peaceful boat; the officers got along and the crew was enjoyed their work, but
cochrane understood that promotion was not likely aboard the Resolution. In 1798, he reboarded his uncles frigate

the Mediterranean.
Because of his natural independent disposition, Cochrane never failed to irritate some of the

86. Application Of Evidence Based Practice
Introduction Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is the process nurses use to conduct research and find recent and
credible evidence to support best practice (McCutcheon, 2009). The process of EBP will be applied to the case
study about a nurse who did not use EBP in her nursing process. This is important because providing EBP is a core
philosophy in the ANMC competency standards for the registered nurse (The Nursing and Midwifery Board of
Australia, 2016). The report will on build assignment one where a problem was identified and an answerable
question was created and apply the remaining steps in the EBP process. These steps include locating the best
evidence to answer the question, appraising it, and provide a summary of best practice (Johnson, 2008). Problem
and answerable question In the case study about Emily the identified problem was that she changed her clinical
practice based on the opinion of a colleague. Therefore, Emily had no valid evidence that her method was safe, as
she had not used the EBP process. Furthermore, her decision had the potential to put her clients at risk. In
clarification of the comments offered in assignment one, the problem that is the focus of the case study is that Emily
did not use EBP and not that she did not follow hospital policy. Assignment one created an answerable question
based on this problem. The question, can mentoring between graduate nurses and senior nurses improve the use of
EBP in graduate nurses, aimed to research a method of

Have you ever had to go all the way to your locker just to get one thing for one class? If we could just take our
backpacks or something to carry things with, we wouldn't have that problem. At Romig Middle School, we aren't
allowed to bring such things. Instead of carrying our backpacks we have to keep them in our lockers at all times. If
we do take backpacks with us to class, we get in trouble by our teachers or security guards. Going back and forth
through the hallways wastes needed energy that we already don't have because of the long and early school hours.
Not only does it waste energy, but it's also time consuming and causes us to become late for class. Students should

contraband or weapons into school, they will!" I believe this statement is true because if a student wanted to bring
drugs or weapons into a school then they would have plenty of ways to hide them without getting caught. Even if a
student did bring those kinds of things into school, the school should have already been prepared to take care of the
issue. At the end of the day, it is a school's and a parents' responsibility to raise their child to know that violence is

94. The Reflection Of The Library Space In The University
The space that we chose to explore was the library. As students within the university, we use the library space on a
daily basis. "Space speak of being, belonging, and becoming" (Australian Government Department of Education
Employment and Workplace Relations, 2009, as cited in Giamminuti, 2013, p. 52). The library is a space that we
are familiar with and expected to be comfortable with. It is a space where students can find books, study,
collaborate, use computers, and print materials. Our understanding of the library is limited to it being a quiet,
respected, and organized space. However, we instead, wanted to explore the unfamiliar, the unexpected, and
uncomfortable aspects of the library. We'd like to explore its "volumes, colours, light, sounds, and smells" and be in
dialogue with these matters (Reggio Children, 2011).
The entrance to the library played a huge role on how we understand this place. We had expectations, from previous
experience, of how the library will be. According to Giamminuti (2013), "what one feels and views when entering a
school can influence what one then perceives as one's role within that school, one's relationship to others, and what
one eventually comes to know about the school" (p. 53).
These doors reminded us of the expectations it held upon. As soon as you enter the library, the atmosphere suddenly
changes.
When people enter the space, they automatically lower their voices and no one would make any loud sound. We

Research Beyond the Classroom by Joel Chirinos. The first session that I attended was "Research Beyond the

advice was to always focusing in our topic to find the most useful information. Research is used to support our
writings, opinions, etc. From this talk, he made us value the library as a very important medium to gain useful and
credible information that could help us in our classes. Mr.Chirinos also mentioned how research does not end in the
classroom. For example, when we are planning to go to a trip, we start researching to look for prices in different

102. Fayol's “Principles” in a University Library
In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the theories of
management that stood out to me was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol was one of the main
proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol "divided organizational activities into
five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of management and believed that "management is a skill one
can learn, rather than a talent received at birth" (Evans & Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I
found that it might be interesting to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to
some of the more applicable aspects of Fayol's principles of management. I ... Show more content on

Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the main stacks, there
was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that performed supervisory tasks. In
my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks
that kept our department running. These included opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work
done by students, assigning hourly jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving
orders and being responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while
we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a difficult situation
the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if one student was chronically
underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian
who managed us to make up the "management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go
together. I would also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could
be, it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones that were
delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no way that he could

I've been volunteering at the Triton College Library since my first semester at Triton. I've learned several things,
both personally and practically.
I actually have past experience in volunteering at libraries. I used to volunteer at my high school's library for 3
years. Because of that I had learned the Dewey Decimal system along with laminating and helping students with
requests. Those skills really came in handy during my time volunteering. I have considered pursuing library studies
to become a librarian, but ultimately decided it wasn't for me. Nonetheless, I still enjoy volunteering ... Show more

Although I didn't keep any because I didn't want to hoard books like I had in high school, I skimmed through some
of them and it's amazing to think that these books had transcended tens of years. It made me wonder just how many
people had held and read the book like I was at that moment, possible before I was even born.
The staff at the library are very kind and supporting. They were always willing to help me when I needed it. They
even offered me snacks and even planned a small goodbye party in their break room with cupcakes and flowers they
had bought for me. I was touched and very grateful that they had planned and gone through the effort to plan a party
for me when I had only been with them a semester. I learned more about them personally this semester compared to
last semester. They still say hi to me occasionally when I go to the library and usually ask how I am.
While I was helping out at the library, I realized just how many resources we have available to us students. I also
noticed that most students didn't even know about them, much less how to access them. We had numerous events
such as a computer coding workshop (for people of all ages) which I would have gone to if it wasn't for it being

115. PDA Disadvantages
Consequently, with every advantage there comes a disadvantage. With PDA's, there is no exception. Firstly, PDA's,
sometimes, fail to support the broader educational mission of the university, by emphasising the immediate delivery
of information rather than the development of collections that meet the long–term needs of the institution (De Fino
& Lo, 2011; Walters, 2012). This therefore fails to support the needs of the students. PDA's can determine the
students' wants and immediate desires and not particularly the students' long–term educational needs, especially
when it comes to course requirements and learning (Fulton, 2014; Walters, 2012). This is particularly important
when new university students lack knowledge and expertise to select the most relevant titles to assist with their
learning. PDA's discourage utilising librarians extensive knowledge, awareness and breadth of subject knowledge
(Walters, 2012). Furthermore, PDA's fail to represent the full range of library stakeholders (Walters, 2012). Walters
(2012) reports that PDA programs, grant selection authority to a limited group of stakeholders, which include
current patrons who use the library and the PDA selection procedure and does not take into account patrons who do
not use the library; future students and faculty; scholars from other institutions; the library as an organisational
entity; and the university as a whole.
In addition, PDA's are systematic and idiosyncratic biased in selection (Walters, 2012).

Every Student Succeeds Improving No Child Left Behind
There have been many reforms that have been put in place since schools were created in 1635 . New acts are
created and changed as America and its school system continues to change. Lyndon B. Johnson, to face the problem
of war on poverty , created the Elementary and Secondary School Act of 1965. As America changed, in 2001,
George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act to replace the 1965 act because America was no longer
competing internationally with other countries . This controversial act has negatively affected teachers and students

These tests play a large role in the lives of teachers and students, and it creates controversy and hardships in the
education system.
NCLB has directly affected teachers and their stability of their jobs. In this act, teachers are evaluated based on
student's standardized test scores. There are many factors that affect students when they take standardized tests.
Students could understand all of the material, but when they take the test have anxiety, and not do well. Student
disabilities also need to be a factor to consider. All students are different, and teachers should not have to worry
about losing their jobs based on one test that their students take. According to Levine, "Tests made it easier to
identify substandard teachers and easier to justify firing them." (Levine). Standardized tests should not be used as a
way to justify; they should be used to test what a student has learned. The importance of these tests is causing
teachers to only focus on the material to make sure the students do well on the tests. They solely focus on what will
be on these tests, which affects the other factors students need to learn at school. This is called "teaching to the test".
For example, students should learn how to do an oral presentation and group projects, which could potentially be
pushed to a corner to focus strictly on testing material. Focusing just on testing material could also make teachers
not focus on their creativity in lesson plans. This deprives

It is once said that "A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life"– Henry Ward Beecher. This quote has
proven to be true as I volunteered at the Sacramento Public library. Volunteering at the Sacramento Public Library
led me to various work experience, and I see it as one of the most important necessities of life, especially for
education. At the library, I learned to work around for my social skills as I helped others when in need, I learned to
always be punctual, or sometimes early to be on time. Though, what I loved doing most in the library was reading
to little children, and what shocked me most was that we could plan and host events in the community room that
was just on the outskirts of the library. Since then, I wondered what other benefits the library has to offer us. It is
well known that the library bids us thousands of book each day, but have you ever wondered if they had anything
special that would interest us in reading? Volunteering at the library, there were many things the library had to offer
for our interest that very few knew about. For example, there are scheduled reading out loud to children everyday,
or the fact that they have a senior teaching day every saturday. Senior Teaching day is where high school volunteers

139. Linked Data On The World Wide Web Essay
Linked data is the process of utilizing and sharing individual data on the World Wide Web. It is more specific than
just uploading a large file to the Internet to be shared. Linking data gives very specific information about all of the
components of a document, not just a complete file. By utilizing this process researchers can collect data more
easily about similar topics without having to read large documents of information. By linking this information in
computer readable data format, this data can be easily searched for on the web. This data becomes easily searchable
on the web and can be found and used with current library information. This machine–readable information can be
read by computers and does not have to rely upon the human eye to read and understand the data. This process will
limit human error and produce information quicker and better than ever.
Linked Data in Libraries In recent years, the area of linked data has become a topic that many in the library field
have spent more time and effort pursuing. For many of us, searching the Internet has become a daily event, and
finding information has become a much easier task with the use of the World Wide Web (Corbett, 2016). Libraries
are going through a period of transition and change and must keep up with the expectations of its users. The future
role of libraries must mold into what is needed to meet new service needs (Wallis, 2015). It is very important that

Digital Tools and the Adult Learner How can digital tools be used to increase the academic success of the adult

"Digital literacy is the ability to use digital technology, communications tools, and/or networks, to access, manage,
integrate, evaluate and create information in order to function in a knowledge society." (Dharkar) Digital tools will
bring home the brick and mortar resources, typically found at traditional colleges and universities, to the adult

Many adult learners are returning to college online or with hybrid classes. With the new age of technology and
learning adults have to be more technology savvy. "Educational quality is insured to a great extent through
educational strategies and strategies related to the development of social relationships through dialogue among
teachers and their adult students." (Harlow) Teachers must adapt their teaching style to cater to their students of all
ages. Students must also adapt to the new technological age. For example, now sometimes students must type their

The majority of college students are using their smartphones for social media. Though social media may help
people staying connected, it is also a distraction. According to Thompson, "Today's tools make it easier for us to

Thompson's view of social media is that they help people stay connected with friends, family members, and other
