2. What is black
carbonBlack carbon (soot) is fine particulate matter mainly comes from diesel engines,
industrial smokestacks , burning of wood & cow dung for residential cooking
and heating , open air cremation of dead bodies ,jungle fire , incomplete burning
of bio-mass ,old brick kilns & from burning of incense sticks & oil lamps (diya) .
Black carbon remains in the atmosphere for only a few days but absorbs more
heat than that of CO2 .

3. Soot from open air
cremation of dead bodies
Soot from old disel engines
Soot from industries Soot from residential cooking
4. black carbon is more harmful than CO2
• The UN reports that 40% of the emissions causing global warming are from black
carbon emissions .
• Black carbon has a strong warming effect ( more than 100-2000 times than CO2 )
both in the atmosphere, and when it lands on snow, ice caps and glaciers, where it
absorbs the sun's heat, reduces reflectivity and causes widespread and faster
melting, causing sea level rise and other climate changes.
• A study of UN expert panel says that black carbon may increase earts’s
temperature by 0.5 degree by 2050 .
• A recent study shows that 250 million tons of black carbon is produced every
every year .
• The Tibetan Plateau & Himalayan glaciers the planet's largest store of ice after
the Arctic and Antarctic , are melting five times faster which could threaten
freshwater resources .
5. Mumbai’s Nariman Point will be submerged by Year 2030
Nariman Point at present 2014 Nariman Point in 2030
The himalayan glaciers may totally disappear causing catastrophic disruption .
the glacier meltdown will first result in rivers being flooded &then drying up.
the ganga delta would turn infertile
6. COASTAL CATASTROPHE :- SEA LEVEL WILL RISE
20-30 CM HIGHER BY 2100 AND 50 MILLION PEOPLE IN
COASTAL INDIA WOULD BE DISPLACED BY FLOODING
It will submerge 6% of Netherlands, 17.5% of Bangladesh and
many Island will disappear. (Lakshadweep, Andaman
& nicobar, SL, Maldives etc.)
7. black carbon affects our health
• The World Health Organization reports that soot emissions kill more than
1.5 million people prematurely worldwide each year. In addition, millions
more, mostly in the developing world, are prone to develop respiratory
illnesses , asthma & heart problems .
• In India alone, black carbon-laden indoor smoke is responsible for over
400,000 premature deaths annually, mostly of women and children. As they
typically spend long hours cooking meals beside smoky fires and stoves,
with infants and small children nearby . With expanding populations in
Africa, India and China, and increased use of biomass (wood, crop residues
and dung), the issue is intensifying.
• Controlling emissions of black carbon, will save lives and improve health
around the world.-UN
8. • A new report from the United Nations environment programme has
concluded cutting the amount of soot we pour into the atmosphere, and
emissions of methane from agriculture, would be one of the most powerful
ways to tackle climate change. Preventing "black carbon", particles of
soot from industry and cooking fires, from polluting the air would help to
cut global warming by as much as 0.5 C, and reduce warming in the
Arctic by about 0.7 C by 2050.
• As black carbon remains in the atmosphere for only a few days - unlike
other greenhouse gases, which may remain in the atmosphere for over a
century - reducing black carbon emissions may be among the most
effective near-term & relatively cheap way for slowing global warming
immediately .

9. What can we do to reduce black carbon …..
1. Banning of vehicles that emit high
levels of black carbon and particulate
filter in every fuel engine .
2. Use of black carbon filter in
industrial ,household & other
chimneys .
3. Installation of low emission brick
kilns having black carbon filter
facility .
4. Use of modern biomass burning
stoves to reduce black carbon
emissions .
10. 5. Use of coal briquettes instead
of coal to reduce black carbon
emission .
6. Ban of fossil fuel burning
in open air .
6. Use of battery operated vehicle
for public transport in big cities .
7. More stress on Electric Crematorium
& chimney based crematorium .
11. BUY A HYBRID CAR
An average hybrid car
driver could save 1 ton
of Black Carbon ,16,000
lbs. of CO2 and about
Rs.1,74,000 per year.
CARPOOL WHEN YOU CAN
Own a big vehicle? Carpooling
with friends and co-workers
saves fuel. You can save ¼ ton of
black carbon 790 lbs. of carbon
dioxide and thousands of rupees
per year.
12. USE COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS
If you replace 3 frequently
used light bulbs with
compact fluorescent bulbs,
you save 300 lbs. of carbon
dioxide and Rs.2,789.40 per
year.
UNPLUG UN-USED ELECTRONICS
Even when electronic devices
are turned off, they use
energy. By unplugging them,
you can save over 1,000 lbs.
of CO2 and Rs.12,000 per
year.
13. PLANT A TREE
Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for
us to breathe. By planting just one tree, you can save
about 2,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.
