- Ramu Pulipati presented on Botsplash's journey to implement continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) processes. They initially used shell scripts and Ansible but found deployment took too long. They then tried Circle CI but had issues with dynamic IP ranges and SSH key distribution. They moved to using AWS Code Suite (CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, CodePipeline) but found it added complexity and was difficult to evolve. Their lessons were to start simple, set clear goals, and accomplish them incrementally rather than taking on too much at once.

A Practical Guide to Selecting a Stream Processing Technology

Why do you need to know about spouts or DStreams just to process a simple sequence of records? Depending on your application’s requirements, you may not need a full framework at all. Processing and understanding your data to create business value is the ultimate goal of a stream data platform. In this talk we will survey the stream processing landscape, the dimensions along which to evaluate stream processing technologies, and how they integrate with Apache Kafka. Particularly, we will learn how Kafka Streams, the built-in stream processing engine of Apache Kafka, compares to other stream processing systems that require a separate processing infrastructure.

For some enterprises, this means having a pipeline that can withstand the velocity and throughput of thousands of product releases, supporting tens of thousands of developers and distributed teams, hundreds of thousands of infrastructure nodes, multitudes of inter-dependent application components, or millions of builds and test-cases. This scale poses unique challenges and implications for your pipeline design. My team at Zalando fell in love with KStreams and their programming model straight out of the gate. However, as a small team of developers, building out and supporting our infrastructure while still trying to deliver solutions for our business has not always resulted in a smooth journey. Can a small team of a couple of developers run their own Kafka infrastructure confidently and still spend most of their time developing code? In this talk, we will dive into some of the problems we experienced while running Kafka brokers and Kafka streams applications, as well as the consultations we had with other teams around this matter. We will outline some of the pragmatic decisions we made regarding backups, monitoring and operations to minimize our time spent administering our Kafka brokers and various stream applications.

Kafka has hundreds of measurements, from the high-level numbers that are often meaningless to the per-partition metrics that stack up by the thousands as our data grows. 1) Apache Kafka is a distributed system with many moving parts to monitor, including brokers, topics, partitions, and the applications that use Kafka. It is critical to monitor Kafka performance to ensure high availability and catch problems early. 2) Key metrics to monitor include partition replication, broker resource usage, request latencies, and end-to-end message delivery. Monitoring message rates and comparing production to consumption helps identify issues like under- or over-consumption. 3) Identifying performance bottlenecks like slow request handling or network saturation helps optimize the Kafka cluster. Drilling down on request latency metrics provides insight into where bottlenecks exist in the request lifecycle.

As organizations invest in DevOps to release more frequently, there’s a need to treat the database tier as an integral part of your automated delivery pipeline – to build, test and deploy database changes just like any other part of your application. However, databases (particularly RDBMS) are different from source code, and pose unique challenges to Continuous Delivery - especially in the context of deployments. Often, code changes require updating or migrating the database before the application can be deployed. A deployment method that works for installing a small database or a green-field application may not be suitable for industrial-scale databases. Updating the database can be more demanding than updating the app layer: database changes are more difficult to test, and rollbacks are harder. Furthermore, for organizations who strive to minimize service interruption to end users, database updates with no-downtime are a laborious operation. Your DB stores the most mission-critical and sensitive data of your organization (transaction data, business data, user information, etc.). As you update your database, you’d want to ensure data integrity, ACID, data retention, and have a solid rollback strategy - in case things go wrong … This talk covers strategies for database deployments and rollbacks: • What are some patterns and best practices for reliably deploying databases as part of your CD pipeline? • How do you safely rollback database code? • How do you ensure data integrity? • What are some best practices for handling advanced scenarios and backend processes, such as scheduled tasks, ETL routines, replication architecture, linked databases across distributed infrastructure, and more. • How to handle legacy database, alongside more modern data management solutions?

When moving to a cloud native architecture Moogsoft knew they needed more scale than Rabbit could provide. Moogsoft moved into Kafka which is known for quick writing and driving heavy event driven workloads on top of niceties such as replayability. Choosing the tool was easy, finding a vendor that ticked all their boxes was not. They needed to ensure scalability, upgradability, builds via existing IAC pipelines, and observability via existing tools. When Moogsoft found Aiven, they were impressed with their offering and ability to scale on demand. During this presentation we will explore how Moogsoft used Aiven for Kafka to manage and scale their data in the cloud.

Understanding Kafka Produce and Fetch api calls for high throughtput applicat...

The data team at Cloudflare uses Kafka to process tens of petabytes a day. All this data is moved using the 2 foundational Kafka api calls: Produce (api key 0) and Fetch (api key 1). Understanding the structure of these calls (and of the underlying RecordSet structure) is key to building high throughput clients. The talk describes the basics of the Kafka wire protocol (api keys, correlation id), and the structure of the Produce and Fetch calls. It shows how the asynchronous nature of the wire protocol can combine with the structure of the Produce and Fetch calls to increase latency and reduce client throughput; a solution is offered through use of synchronous single-partition calls. The RecordSet structure, which is used to encode and store sets (batches) of records is described, and its implications on Fetch requests are discussed. The relationship between Fetch api calls and ""consume"" operations is discussed, as is the impact of offset alignment to RecordSet boundaries.

Good Morning everybody, welcome to our webinar on database DevOps. This is one of our monthly webinars series where each month we focus on the integration of our automation tools with different source control systems as well as build and release management tools. Our demo last month was on the integration with the TFS stack so using TFS to source control, build and deploy database changes. Today, we are going to change things up a little and use Git as our source control system, Jenkins as our build system and Octopus Deploy as a release management tool.
We’re going to run through a couple of slides to quickly go over the challenges with database change management and we’ll jump right into the demo afterwards. Just a couple of housekeeping items, everyone will be on mute throughout the webinar but please do post your questions using the gotowebinar panel and we’ll try to answer as many of them as possible towards the end of our session today.
Most of you are familiar with Redgate and have probably used our tools to some extent. I’d actually like to run a quick poll to see how familiar everyone is with Redgate tools For those of you who are new to Redgate, we are a software company and have been specializing in SQL Server tools specifically for developers and DBAs for just over 16 years now. Alright, now let’s talk about the challenges with database change management. A lot of dev shops out there are already utilizing best practices around application lifecycle management and rapid delivery of their application code but the databases are normally left out and there are still a lot of manual processes involved in delivering database changes. This is mainly because deployments of databases is not as easy as swapping out old code with a new one. Databases carry state and hold business critical data that needs to be safely preserved.
Because of the unique challenges with database delivery, we’ve come across a lot of dev shops who’ve experienced some of the issues in this list to some extent. As Part of our database delivery process we need to make sure that we are executing the right changes on our target databases going all the way production and we also need to make sure that we have changes from all developers in the right order so, without the right tooling and the right processes this can become a cumbersome task for developers and specifically for operation DBAs
Most of you are probably familiar with the principles of Application Lifecycle Management and DLM here is no different. Our focus is to help build repeatability into your delivery process where you are continuously testing the production readiness of the changes that you apply to your databases. Deploying small units of change is really the key principal here. I’ve talked to a lot of dbas who are required to review thousands of lines of scripts when it comes to deploying the database and that normally can take days depending on how many bugs they find in that script. By committing database changes to source control on regular basis, you can introduce automated builds and tests to make sure that all of those small units of changes are tested and validated multiple times before you are ready to deploy from dev to your next environment and that can result into your releases being more reliable and less time consuming.
