What is a genre of literature?
 A genre is a category or type of

literature that is generally broken into
fiction and non-fiction.
Fiction vs. Non-Fiction
 Fictional stories are not

real and involve characters
and storylines that are
made up by the author.

 Non-fiction stories are

real or true stories about
people and events that
actually occurred.
What is Realistic Fiction?
 Realistic fiction are stories that are made up but are

about people and events that could actually happen.
Characteristics of Realistic Fiction
 The characters resemble real people.
 The places that the characters live in and visit (setting)

could be real places.
 The things that happen to the characters could happen in
real life.
 The problems (conflicts) that the characters face are
similar to real, everyday problems.
 The main problem in the story helps the reader discover
a realistic solution.
