Ronald Reagan announced in 1994 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease five years after leaving the presidency. Throughout his letter announcing his diagnosis, Reagan expressed regret for the toll the disease would take on his family, especially his wife Nancy. As Reagan's condition deteriorated in his final days, Nancy was constantly by his bedside along with daughter Patti. Reagan died in 2004 at age 93 from pneumonia complicated by Alzheimer's, and his funeral was attended by over 100,000 mourners. Reagan remains one of the most memorable Republican presidents for his leadership ending the Cold War and communication skills.
