This document provides lesson materials for a unit on Satchel Paige, including comprehension questions, vocabulary words, and discussion prompts. It introduces Satchel Paige and some of the challenges he faced as an African American baseball player. Key points covered include defining vocabulary words like "barrier" and "hostility," discussing how people overcome challenges through traits like ambition and discipline, and summarizing parts of Paige's biography. The document guides students through various reading comprehension and language arts activities related to Satchel Paige's life and career.
This workshop explores the need to use English, with above beginners, as a global language to examine global issues through the practice of critical, comparative, and creative thinking skills related to social values. The framework is based on Robert Fisher’s language learning model of the inter-relatedness of reading, writing, listening, speaking, input, output and metacognition. In this awareness raising session the basic tenet underpinning the action is We are all the Same, We are all Different with the emphasis on teaching for diversity. Questioning ourselves comes before questioning the students, and changing our perceptions is a necessary first step. There will be some theory and plenty of activity.
It has become widely understood that effective language learning involves more than the four integrated skills of ELT. The missing link is the fifth dimension ........that of teaching thinking. This PIPP will explore the cognitive processes employed by learners in a drama lesson and see how they relate to the development of higher order thinking skills. Reference will be made to Fisher's model of language learning, Heathcote's premise that drama IS education, Baldwin’s cross reference chart and Cummins´ quadrant of cognitive processes. There will be some theory and lots of activity.
Advanced ELL students, while often proficient orally, have a limited vocabulary, and read and write below grade level. This presentation will describe how ELL teachers in two high schools use engaging material and effective strategies that prepare students for mainstream classes. The techniques, readings, and writing assignments can also be used in the post secondary setting.

Composite Plate Optimization with Practical Design ConstraintsAltair
Composite free size optimization has the potential to generate weight savings and performance improvements for many applications of composite structures. Key to realizing such improvements is practical application of design and manufacturing constraints in the optimization model.
Fatigue life estimation of rear fuselage structure of an aircrafteSAT Journals
Abstract Integrity of the airframe structure is achieved through rigorous design calculations, stress analysis and structural testing. Finite element method (FEM) is widely used for stress analysis of structural components. Each component in the airframe becomes critical based on the load distribution, which in-turn depends on the attitude of the aircraft during flight. Fuselage and wing are the two major components in the airframe structure. The current study includes a portion of the fuselage structure. Empennage is the rear portion of the aircraft, which consists of rear fuselage, Horizontal tail and vertical tail. The air loads acting on the HT also get transferred to rear portion of the fuselage. First step in ensuring the safety of the structure is the identification of critical locations for crack initiation. This can be achieved through detailed stress analysis of the airframe In this project one of the major stress concentration areas in the fuselage is considered for the analysis. Rear fuselage portion with a cargo door cutout region will be analysed. The structure considered for the stress analysis consists of skin, bulkheads and longerons, which are connected to each other through rivets. Aerodynamic load acting on the aircraft components is a distributed load. Depending on the mass distribution of the fuselage structure the inertia forces will vary along the length of the fuselage. The inertia force distribution makes the fuselage to bend about wing axis. During upward bending, bottom portion of the fuselage will experience tensile stress. A cutout region in the tensile stress field will experience high stress due to concentration effect. These high stress regions will be probable fatigue crack initiation locations in the current work, fatigue damage calculation will be carried out to estimate the fatigue life of the structure under the fluctuating loads experienced during flight. Miner’s rule will be adopted for fatigue damage calculation. Keywords: Transport aircraft, Rear fuselage, Cargo door, Finite element method, Stress concentration, Fatigue damage, Miner’ rule
New HyperWorks Pedestrian Impact Tool for vehicle engineering and CAE simulationAltair
The engineering challenges according to the pedestrian safety requirements have an important impact on the vehicle development time line and on vehicle design. The different pedestrian safety regulations that a vehicle has to fulfill (legal (ECE, GTR…) or consumer (EuroNCAP)) represent a high number of impact points that have to be defined depending on the regulation protocol. For each impact point, a FEM simulation has to be performed in order to evaluate the overall pedestrian protection performances. The integration of this process into an innovative virtual prototyping method needs a CAE tool allowing the automatic definition of the impact points and the automatic generation of ready-to-run FE models for impact simulation. Moreover, pedestrian requirements have a direct influence on vehicle design. That’s the reason why, an automatic definition of the impact points based on CAD design surfaces is a key to allow engineering judgment and design changes in the early phase of the vehicle development. The new HyperWorks Pedestrian Impact Tool, developed by Altair Engineering in cooperation with the Ford of Europe Pedestrian Protection Team, offers a perfect solution to these challenges. During the presentation, an overview of the tool capabilities will be given as well as results of an application on a Ford vehicle model.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

13. Word Analysis – Shades of Meaning
Sometimes two words have very similar meanings. These
shades of meanings can be understood best by using each
word in context.
A dancing dog is uncommon, but a dancing mouse would
be unique!
Explain the shades of meaning of the words uncommon
and unique.
Try the shades of meaning with mocking and teasing with a
partner in the sentence below.
Her teasing manner sometimes makes me laugh. His
mocking voice sounds mean.
14. Literary Terms – Idioms
An idiom is a phrase or expression that has accepted meaning
outside the literal meanings of the words. For example, when we
say a job is a “piece of cake” we mean the job can be done
easily. The meaning doesn’t have anything to do with cake.
Look at “Play Ball!” on page 115. In the passage it says that a great
player has “a style that stands out.” What does “stands out” mean
here?
Does it have anything to do with standing?
In Satchel Paige the author says, “it would land somewhere in the
middle of next week” when talking about a player hitting a ball.
Discuss and write in your spiral with a partner:
would the ball really end up in the middle of next week?
what does this mean?
15. Vocabulary Skill: Antonyms
