Louis Sachar was born in 1954 in New York and moved to California as a child. He became an avid reader in high school after being inspired by authors like J.D. Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut. While in college, he worked as an aide at an elementary school, which inspired him to write his first children's book Sideways Stories from Wayside School. After graduating law school, he continued writing children's books part-time while also practicing law, until his books became successful enough for him to write full-time. He currently lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and daughter.
