14. Case Study:
Differential Pressure Transmitters to Control Boiler Steam Production
► Company Profile
This electric generating plant, with a total generating capacity of
2,640,000 kW via 4 coal powered generating units, is owned by one
of the largest electricity utilities companies in the United States.
► Challenge
Existing drum level transmitters placed on the four corners of a boiler drum were drifting by +/- 2”. Readings never
corresponded and therefore operators were unable to accurately determine the boiler’s drum levels - a critical
measurement for efficiently controlling steam. The readings needed to be recorded precisely and match for the process
to flow interrupted and to prevent overheating and damage to the superheater due to water ingress.
► Solution
Rawson provided two ABB Model 266DSH Differential Pressure transmitters for trial use. The
transmitters were placed on opposite corners of a boiler and measurements transmitted to the
control room. The 266DSH was selected because it measures liquid, gas or steam flow as well
as level, pressure and density. It also met the specific application requirements - a tighter span
(minimum span of 0.8 H2O with a 16” H2O Upper Range Limit) and improved base accuracy
(0.06%). The 266DSH was easily integrated into the customers process control system via a 4 to
20 mA DC + HART output signal.
Additional benefits derived from this solution:
• Both terminal block and communication boards can be replaced in few minutes without the
need to reconfigure the transmitter.
• Process parameters can be adjusted using the “Easy Setup” feature, carried out with local
indicator, HART Hand Held Terminal or Device Type Manager (DTM) allows to adapt the
instrument within shortest possible time.
• User selectable application-specific visualization; display may also indicate static pressure, sensor temperature and
diagnostic messages as well as an optional bar graph to indicate the signals current percent of span.
• Totalized and instantaneous flow indication.
• Full compliance with PED Category III, SIL2 and SIL3 TUV certified.
• Plugged Impulse Line Detection as standard helping customer in detecting when the impulse line are going to be
plugged. This is real predictive maintenance.
► Bottom Line
After 6 months of use with zero drift and tight span range, the ABB trial transmitters proved their
worth. Elated with the transmitters’ performance, not only did the client decided to purchase
4 transmitters for each of their 4 boilers, but also made ABB transmitters the standard for all
applications despite a 30 year relationship with their now ousted supplier. The client has been
greatly satisfied with their decision to switch to ABB and has resulted in a $50,000 sale every year
for the past 6 years.

15. Case Study:
Raw Water Intake Filtration for Carbon Capture and Storage
► Company Profile
This 7 unit, duel fueled coal and natural gas power plant has 3
combined cycle combustion and 2 combined cycle steam turbine
generating units. The unit served as the host site for the “first
and largest sequential solvent based capture and sequestration
demonstration [carbon capture and storage or CCS] on pulverized
coal power plant in the world.”
► Challenge
The 25MW carbon (CO2
) capture plant received flue gas from a slipstream ducted from one of the power generation
plant’s units. Because it was built within the power generating plant’s property line, it was able to take advantage of its
proximity to a nearby river, the facility’s main water source.
When the capture plant was initially constructed, a water
treatment company supplied water treatment chemicals,
cooling tower and media filters. However, it was soon
realized that the filters were undersized and unable to
provide the level of water filtration and flow capacity
required for the carbon capture process.
► Solution
An emergency call was made to Rawson to determine a
solution that would provide clean filtered (direct river)
water at the state rate of 500 gpm.
The solution provided was the Amiad 4” SK (Spin Klin®)
Galaxy, 6 unit battery system with 20 micron disc filters. This unit is an automatic, self cleaning filtration system which was
designed as a highly efficient solution for high flow rate applications in all types of water. Because of its modular design it
can be expanded in the future.
► Bottom Line
The system was expedited and shipped within 4 weeks and the plant was able to begin filtering raw
water for flue gas CO2
capture, treatment and storage. Since its installation in June 2012, the water
filtration system has needed only minimal maintenance.
Through the carbon capture process the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere
has decreased drastically (up to 90%) and the project has been acknowledged for its achievements
worldwide.
