- Welcome to the Digi-Key Electronics Getting the Pi Up and Running – Part 1 of 2 product training module. This presentation will provide users with a step by step procedure for the initial setup of the raspberry Pi 3 Model B and will demonstrate the ease of set up and will list required and optional extras and will provide a comparison of previous versions. This presentation will have the Raspberry Pi, parts and information to begin the setup procedure. This presentation should take approximately 30 minutes to become aware and walk through the setup procedure.
- This slide provides a list of the features provided by the new version Raspberry PI 3 Model B. On Board WiFi/Bluetooth support, 1.2GHz Quadcore ARM Cortex-A53 64bit processor, 1 Gig of Ram, 400MHz VideoCore IV, 10/100 Ethernet from an RJ45 port, 802.1n wireless LAN (WiFi) and Bluetooth 4.1. This version has 4 USB ports, a 2 X 20 Pin Header for connectivity. A 15-pin MIPI Camera Interface, a DSI 15-pin / HDMI Out / Composite RCA Display Interfaces. The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B is now available at Digi-Key with part number 1597-1366-ND.
- Not only does the Pi 3 come with new wireless capabilities, but the Raspberry Pi Foundation has yet still managed to keep the price down. The Raspberry Pi 3 is what users would expect; it doesn’t come with a whole host of additional hardware extras, such as SATA or a Real Time Clock (RTC) that would just be unruly and unnecessary, and it would form part of the Raspberry Pi’s strategy. Whilst other features would be great to some users, they would also, without a doubt, add additional costs to the Pi. When the Raspberry Pi was first introduced to the world four years ago, its main purpose was to provide a low cost computer platform for everyone to learn computer science. To this day that factor remains and the Raspberry Pi 3 is the proof in the pudding. Not only is it a low cost computer, it has now become a serious contender for a real computer that is useful, not just a set-top box media streamer or retro gaming device.
- Two items that are essential in the set-up and use of the Raspberry PI include a 2 A 5 V power supply (993-1292-ND for example) and an available connection to the internet.
- Users of the Raspberry PI will also want to have a Class 10 Micro SD Card on hand.
- Additional items needed include a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Users of the Raspberry PI may also find the PI specific case very useful for stability and protection.
- The first step in getting started with the Raspberry PI is to make sure that the user has the newest version of the operating system. Depending on download speed this can take approximately 40 minutes. This can be located and downloaded at https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ .
- Next, choose RASPBIAN JESSIE and save it to a location that will be easily remembered for future use.
- The next item to download is the win32diskimager. There is a link on this slide that will take users straight to the download page and will automatically start the download process. Click run at the bottom of the page when the download bar appears and follow the on screen prompts to download and setup. Once it is up and running the user will see the following image.
- Click on the folder button and browse to the folder the image was saved in and click open, highlight the file and click open.
- After inserting the Class 10 SD Micro card Click Write and click yes.
- The user will see the green status bar working across the screen of the image writer. When it has completed this image will appear. Then click ok and then exit. The Raspberry Pi now has a beginning operating system.
- In summary, this first module in a two part series has instructed users on how to get the image burned and ready to run on the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. It has also shown the user the required and optional equipment available. In part two, the initial set up will move into the processes of connecting the Raspberry PI and starting the booting process.
