The Ice Condition Detector is a one-piece, probe-type device designed to detect the
presence of icing conditions. It provides a signal correlating to ice accretion on aircraft surfaces.
When ice detector detects ice, it activates the anti-ice systems, signals the aircraft systems to
adjust the stall warning angles to compensate for the effect of ice accretion on the surfaces and
notifies on the Crew Alerting System (CAS).
Goodrich 0871 series Ice Detectors use a magnetostrictive technology to drive the sensing probe
to resonate at its natural frequency. As ice accretes on the probe, a shift in resonance frequency
occurs and an ice signal is activated when the frequency reaches the set point.
