A multi-family apartment building located in Winter Haven, FL.
Program Statement:
Set upon an urban block devoid of practically any street engagement,
this 9-unit rental apartment building aims to reinvigorate the
downtown of a small town in Central Florida. The building site is only
one block away from the epicenter of downtown and this project
represents the first new residential apartments to be built in the
downtown area in over three decades. Each two-bedroom apartment
has a two car garage that is accessed from the rear of the building. A
series of courtyard gardens line the main street frontage that strike a
perfect balance between privacy, security and urban engagement.
The front door to each unit is accessed from the main street through a
rusted metal gate with a customized laser-cut pattern. The
landscaped courtyards serve as both an entry feature and an urban
‘yard’.
A randomized series of slender vertical columns provide not only
structural support, but additional privacy and solar shading. These
architectural elements give the building a unique, yet honest identity.
Built for only $110/psf, this project offers a new affordable option for
urban living in this small town.
