3. The music video for Radiohead’s “Street Spirit” goes
above and beyond the requirements of a music video.
The video in itself is a stunning piece of
cinematography, almost resembling more a short film
than a music video. The video is entitled: “Motion
Sickness” and explores the use of motion through
different time manipulations, resulting in a series of
incredible shots to music, however unlike most music
videos. It is about as conceptual as they come,
featuring only a minimum amount of singing,
significant from a band featuring guitars, bass and
drums. The video is carried by the concept of time
slowing and fastening, creating interesting dissonance
between objects in the frame.

4. Being a conceptual video it does not illustrate the
song’s meaning to much of an extent, although it
does create a mood of distance and isolation,
linking with the song’s general meaning. It is
extremely successful, however, in creating an
impact on the viewer, and causing them to
remember the song, which is the overall aim of
the music video. The videos identification as a
film in itself does pose extra marketing
opportunities. It certainly does fulfill the
audiences expectations in terms of mood and
spectacle.

5. For these reasons “Motion Sickness” is, in my
opinion, a very successful music video, and a
perfect example of the conceptual video.
