In the Spring ‘14 semester, we collaborated to design and deliver a course at Daemen College entitled, “Social Media Fundamentals.” By developing a student-led social media marketing project, course participants engaged real-world social justice issues using real-world tools and techniques. Engaging diversity issues on their own campus, students applied their knowledge through creating their own digital presence, interpreting community norms and standards in virtual worlds, examining legal and justice issues, analyzing common Internet analytics, and appraising their own social media campaign. What was learned was that an expansive interpretation of “classroom space” that included all interactions between participants afforded an interdisciplinary playground for students to explore. This session will demonstrate to participants how the course evolved into an interdisciplinary learning experience, how we mapped the study of social media to interdisciplinary studies, and how we addressed issues of student engagement when introducing new technologies.

Today’s college students use social media (i.e., Facebook, Myspace, Twitter), cell phones, blogs, and instant messaging at higher rates than people from other generations. In higher education, faculty members generally lag behind students in their use of technology. While some faculty members embrace it, most have negative views of newer technologies, believing that technology use hurts students academically and socially. Nevertheless, research demonstrates that students generally utilize newer technologies in ways that are beneficial to them. For instance, recent research has shown that students who use Facebook at high rates have more positive educational outcomes. Additionally, the use of blogs, cell phones, and instant messaging have all been shown to promote student academic and psychosocial development.
This presentation reviews recent research on how college students use technologies such as social media, cell phones, blogs, and instant messaging. Additionally, these slides highlight the latest research on student attitudes about social media, statistics on their use, differences in use based on gender, ethnicity, and social class (the digital divide), positive academic and social effects of technology use, and research-based strategies to help faculty members integrate technology into their courses in order to support student academic development.

ASSURE Method Day 3

Little SDO & Camilla SDO presented on best practices in educational outreach using NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and examples from other NASA education missions. They discussed using social media like Facebook and Twitter to share information about NASA's SDO mission and the sun. An example mission called BTS-1 took three students to the edge of space on a high altitude balloon flight to inspire students. Educational outreach uses real NASA missions and collaborations with students to teach STEM topics and excite younger generations about space.Web 2.0 in the classroom

ASSURE Method Day 5
This lesson plan is designed for a 9th grade honors class in West Virginia to analyze pulsar plots over 5 days of instruction. The students will work in groups of 2-3 to analyze pulsar plots from an online database using previously taken notes. They will then present their findings on Facebook and discuss each other's posts. On the final day, students will present their findings alongside robotics projects they have been building. The teacher will facilitate discussion and ensure technology is available for presentations. Students will be assessed based on group participation, robot applications and their engagement on social media forums throughout the unit. Feedback will be used to revise and improve the lesson plan.

The use of the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) has speedily increased during the last 20 years. They have led us to a new global citizenship, a new way of thinking and even a new way of behaving, which have influenced all knowledge fields, including education. As a matter of fact, UNESCO’s ICT Competency Standards for Teachers (2008) recently pointed out that both students and teachers must utilize technology effectively in order to live, learn, and work successfully in an increasingly complex, information-rich and knowledge-based society. Students have new ways to access information and learn; they have naturally developed cognitive skills that make the use of digital technology much easier. Thus, they are called ‘the net generation’ or 'digital natives', people who have grown up with technology, mainly Internet (Prensky, 2001). Consequently, teachers have to develop digital competences to satisfy the demands of that new generation. Making the teaching-learning process more effective, interesting, dynamic, updated and adapted to the new learning times is a must for us. This presentation will offer an overview of digital literacy and a basic training on powerful Web 2.0 tools (blogs, wikis, podcasts, social networking, etc) to enhance the ELT teaching practice.
