Vox pops questions
Do you think there’s a technology age gap?
We will ask this question as it is the main one that our documentary is trying to ask, getting
the publics’ opinion on this will present the documentary as fairer and will let us guide the
rest of the questions that we will ask the people.
The purpose of the question is to get a general idea about how people feel about the
general topic of our documentary so that it can lead onto other, more detailed questions.
With this as the opening question, in editing we will most likely use an equal amount of
people who said yes and the same who said no. this is mediating the answer as even though
the question doesn’t lead to an answer we are trying to remain ‘objective’ even if the
answers aren’t in even numbers.
With this question, we are trying to represent the younger and older generation as equal.
Are the older generation adapting in their use of technology?
This is the question we will ask if the answer to the previous question is that yes, the person
does believe that there is a generation gap.
We will ask this question because it will tell us about the ideas that people have about the
older generations use and attitude to new technologies.
The purpose of this question is to get an idea about how both older and younger and older
people feel about the adaptation of the older generation to the new inventions and
technologies that are available not that are new to them.
This question may make older people look incapable of adapting to new technologies,
enforcing the stereotypes that older people are helpless.
If the answer is that yes, older people are adapting this will subvert the stereotype of older
people and show them as willing to change in their ways which isn’t how older people are
usually shown in the mainstream media.
Once again, this will be mediated in editing; we will most likely try to use the same amount
of yes, they are adapting and no they aren’t making progress in their use of technology. This
will be done to try and represent both sides equally, even if the amount of answers on both
sides aren’t. This means that we are picking answers that fit into what we want. This is done
to try and remove the bias of older people being incapable of using technology.
What do you think are the differences in how generations use
technology differently?
This question is based on Levi Strouss’ theory of binary opposites. This question will be
asked to get an idea about how the two different groups in our documentary are different in
their uses and habits with technology.
The purpose of this question is to give us different opinions about how different ages use
technology differently. Another purpose may be to enhance the difference and potential
opposition of the two groups.
The answers that we will most likely use are the ones that talk about the most extreme
differences in the uses. This will also enhance the opposition. This is selective editing once
again and due to this we are mediating to most likely show the difference in uses of
technology to be more extreme than they probably are. This may be more entertaining for
the viewer to watch than if we just used to answer that don’t have much differences.
This represents the two different groups as binary opposites, I don’t really believe that
either group is represented as more positive than the other as it shows the
What sort of technology do you think older people are using
compared to younger people?
This once again is based on binary opposition, and the differences in younger and older
people’s uses of technology.
We will ask this question to see what the two different generations think the main
differences in their language uses are.
The purpose of this question is to give us information about what other differences there
are in technology use between the generations.
With this answer, we will probably just use most of them and as they are as I don’t believe
there really is an argument to be made with this question, it’s one to just get an idea of
opinions and the main technologies that the other group uses.
This may be binary opposites and if the younger people say that the older people don’t use
much technology then it can once again represent them negatively by showing them as not
willing to change. Older people may also represent the younger as using too much
technology therefore this may represent young people badly.
