2. From these radio adverts, these seem to be constant themes/ conventions of radio adverts:
-Radio Adverts usually last for 30 seconds approximately.
- There is always a voice over present.
-There is usually a background track or a ‘jingle’ before the voiceover and after the voiceover, this
sometimes fades during the voiceover so it can be heard in the background – sometimes it just fades
altogether. This music is used to make the advert stand out and be memorable.
-Specific language and words used to interest the target audience as the advert is designed to
persuade a certain person. (Alton towers – families, people who like theme parks, Snickers – people
who like chocolate, the words used ‘get some nuts’ could indicate they are targeting men in
particular, Nandos – mainly teenagers , people who enjoy food or spicy food in particular).
-Radio adverts are usually categorised into 4 types. Humour, surreal, dramatic and realistic. Dramatic
is used in both the snickers and the Alton towers adverts as this makes what they are advertising
seem like something that is a must have.
-The heavy persuasive language used can be heard in the adverts above – such as repetition,
alliteration and superlatives, this is also so the product or thing that is being advertised stays in the
mind of the audience.
-The voiceover is usually someone who speaks clearly and audibly and will usually have a lively and
upbeat tone to their voice. In the Alton towers advert they affect scared voices as it highlights what
they are advertising – a ‘scarefest’.
-Some radio adverts will contain exclusive offers to draw listeners in.
-Sometimes, depending on the product, there will be a slogan which will immediately resonate with
the reader what the slogan represents. This makes the advertising easier as it is memorable.
-The mode of address is always aimed directly at the audience as if the voice on the advert is
speaking to the audience personally.
-Most radio adverts start with a question as this engages the audience and makes them listen to
hear the ‘answer’.
