The document outlines a new vision of retirement that focuses on pursuing one's goals and dreams at any age rather than simply stopping work at a certain age. It discusses rewriting the traditional retirement myths of solely leisurely pursuits after 65 and presents an alternative of integrating work and passion into one's life journey. The document promises to help readers craft their own personalized retirement narrative and shows how to achieve it through finding inspiration in Hollywood and reimagining oneself rather than adhering to preconceived notions of retirement.
Modern life often leads to overwork and stress that goes unnoticed until it's too late. A print ad campaign uses a tie with subtle signs of distress, like the people it represents, to raise awareness of work-related stress and direct people to support resources before they reach a breaking point. The goal is to encourage people to check in on themselves and others so that suffering is caught early instead of when it's too late.

GWT International Conference 2022 - Tackling Climate Change using an intergen...Alison Clyde
The document discusses the outcomes of COP26 and whether it constituted success or failure from an inter-generational perspective. It quotes UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying that future generations will judge current leaders and if they fail on climate, future generations will not forgive them. It also quotes the UN Secretary-General saying the COP26 agreements were a compromise that did not overcome contradictions. Greta Thunberg is quoted dismissing the results as "blah, blah, blah" but that real work will continue outside formal negotiations. The author reflects that success needs to be measured by science not politics; climate justice requires those in power give up some power; and being in negotiations is just one part of driving change.

Early Texas had an economy dominated by farming and ranching during the 1820s and 1830s. Large plantations specialized in growing cotton and other crops with slave labor. Ranching also grew as a key economic activity, with Tejanos and later settlers raising cattle on the prairies and in river valleys. Trade and business developed, with merchants and other businessmen operating under a largely free enterprise system with minimal government control. However, poor transportation infrastructure, especially roads, posed challenges for economic growth.
The document discusses Mexico's colonization laws in Texas in the 1820s and 1830s, which allowed empresarios like Stephen F. Austin, Green Dewitt, and Martin de León to bring settlers to Texas. The empresarios would receive large grants of land for every family they settled in Texas. Austin was the most important empresario, bringing over 1,500 families and is known as the "Father of Texas." By 1834 over 21,000 settlers lived in Texas due to the work of empresarios like Austin.
Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle led an expedition in 1684 to establish a French colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River. However, they missed the river's mouth and settled instead at Matagorda Bay, building a settlement called Fort Saint Louis. Disease and attacks from local Native Americans caused many deaths among the colonists. La Salle attempted to get help but was killed by his own men. The few remaining colonists were later killed in an Indian attack, ending France's colony in the region. This challenged Spain's dominance as the sole European power in North America.
Life in the Spanish missions in Texas consisted of daily prayer and work from dawn to dusk under the direction of priests and soldiers. Men tended crops while women did tasks like making pottery, weaving, and cooking. The Spanish hoped the native Indians would adopt Catholicism and European ways of life, but they often maintained their traditional celebrations and customs. Overall, life was harsh with dirt floors, open windows, and occasional food shortages, though some missions had better conditions than others. Nearby presidios provided protection for the missions and supervised the Indians, and towns developed diverse populations and the beginnings of local government.
1) The Spanish missions in East Texas originally failed in the early 1700s, causing the Spanish to ignore Texas for over 20 years.
2) In 1713, a French trader named Louis Juchereau de St. Denis traveled through East Texas, alarming the Spanish and causing them to fear French influence in the region.
3) In 1716, the Spanish led a new expedition to East Texas to establish missions, with St. Denis serving as a guide. They successfully established the Mission San Francisco de los Tejas and five other missions.
War broke out between France and Spain in Europe in 1719. This affected their colonies in North America as French soldiers from Louisiana attacked and raided the Spanish mission of San Miguel de Linares. In response, the Spanish temporarily abandoned the East Texas region. However, in 1721 the Viceroy ordered the Marques de San Miguel de Aguyayo to reoccupy the missions. Aguayo negotiated an agreement with the French commander to separate control of French Louisiana and Spanish Texas. He expanded Spanish settlements by establishing Los Adaes as the capital and building the mission and presidio of La Bahia near Matagorda Bay.

"Much is in the news today about what is becoming of the next generation. Discussants usually say one of two things. On one side, researchers say that technology will impact a child's development and lead to increases in narcissism. Others feel that there is nothing to be alarmed about and this is a common cry of every newer generation about the older. Using the current research as well as experiences from the classroom and consulting room, the author in this paper uses a psychoanalytic frame to redefine the question and hopefully establish a more practical way about thinking and feeling about technology, narcissism, and the state of things to come. The predictions aim to help readers understand and deal with impending changes.
My iPhone Self & Facebook Family: Is technology changing us?Mathias Klang
Technology is changing how humans interact and think in fundamental ways. While technology liberates us from constraints of the past, our habits and routines become locked into the technologies we adopt. Some argue this can infantilize the brain and reduce attention spans, while others see potential for new forms of intelligence. The effects of technologies like social media on human communication, relationships, and information consumption are complex with reasonable arguments on both sides. Ultimately, striking a balance between the opportunities and risks of technology will be an ongoing challenge.

iPhone Living: On using and being abused by technologyMathias Klang
This document summarizes Mathias Klang's thoughts on living with and being impacted by technology. It discusses how technology has evolved from ancient prosthetics to modern smartphones and social networks. While technology connects people and increases access to information, it may also isolate users, reduce attention spans, and allow for more control and manipulation of personal data. The document questions whether technology enriches lives or alters human behavior and relationships in unintended ways. In the end, it remains unclear if heavy technology use leads to more meaningful thoughts or a new form of intelligence.
This document contains 53 passages from various authors on the topic of ideas. The passages cover ideas from different perspectives such as how ideas are formed, spread, understood, and impact society and technology. Some key excerpts discuss ideas as the means to create systems or be enslaved by them, how entertaining an idea is different than living with it permanently, and how ideas originate from attention and discipline of the mind.
The document contains a collection of quotes related to leadership, change, vision, teamwork, innovation and overcoming challenges. Some key themes that emerge are the importance of confronting problems rather than ignoring them, promoting a culture of creative dissatisfaction to drive excellence, and achieving more by working together than alone through collaboration and trust.

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on BlockchainClaudio Di Ciccio
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
