THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL YEAR for the
Barrington United Methodist Church (BUMC)
Rummage Sale, as it celebrates its 85th
anniversary! An institution in the community,
the sale began during the Great Depression.
“Times were hard” was so often heard and
church families reached out to help each
other. What started as a trade between
families evolved into a rummage sale so others
experiencing hard times could share the
abundance. Records of one of the first sales, in
1932, showed a profit of $11.67.
NEARLY A CENTURY OF RUMMAGE SALE
PROCEEDS
By the 1940s, there were two sales per year,
spring and fall, and they netted $200 to $500
per sale. Some of the proceeds of the sale in
1944 purchased $12 of canned goods sent to
the Lake Bluff Orphanage and the Methodist
Old People’s Home. By this time, the sale had
become so well-known that families would ride

the train out from Chicago for to shop.
In the 1960s, profit from the sales was
often over $2,000. Sales continued to be held
in the spring and fall and included a bake sale.
A newspaper article highlighted items for the
“Specialty Shop” that offered coffee and rolls.
When the fire destroyed the downtown
Barrington United Methodist Church building
in October 1998, just a week before the
scheduled sale, the Knights of Columbus
offered their building, then on Kelsey Road.
With the help of amazing volunteers, items
for the sale were donated and arranged for
sale in just two days, instead of the usual five
days. The Knights continued to allow the use of
their space until the new church building was
completed in 2003.
Now, 85 years later, the Rummage Sale
continues to serve. “The sale is a great
opportunity to find some unique treasures
and bargains. But more important, it provides
funds for many worthy organizations and
provides families a way to stretch their budget
with a selection of needed items at a low
price,” committee member Carolyn Schneider
said. Sale profits continue to go to local
organizations, such as BACOA’s Meals with
Wheels, FISH Food Pantry-Carpentersville,
PADS, ChildServ, and to the mission work of
United Methodist Women.
Shoppers will find clothing (mens, womens,
and childrens), shoes, and children’s toys in
the lower level. Departments upstairs include
books, CDs, DVDs, housewares, lamps, tools,
linens, holiday items, crafts, pictures, frames,
and fabrics. Jewelry, accessories, and purses
are in a separate room. Small furniture pieces,
bikes, sporting goods, and outdoor items are
just some of the departments that fill the tent
to the seams.
“One of the outstanding areas not to be
missed is the French Room. No longer just
the nicer items, the French Room has evolved
into a true ‘Specialty Shop’, filled with carefully
selected, high-quality items, including china,
clothing, antiques, and collectibles, and other
amazing treasures,” said committee chair Mary
Mellon.

12. IN JUNE, THE MUCH-LOVED SAFETY TOWN PROGRAM, sponsored
by Barrington Junior Women's Club, took the program on the road
in a first-ever “Safety Town Around Town” at Sunny Hill Elementary
School in Carpentersville. Led by former volunteer Melanie Trejo, an
abbreviated week-long session brought the vital safety lessons of
street crossings, stranger danger, poison awareness, fire protocol,
and more to 14 attentive campers. Various community speakers
met with the students each day, and an outing to the Safety Town
permanent site riding trikes was the highlight.
"This pilot program fills a need in this area of bringing important
lessons to incoming second-graders. I was so happy to be a part of
this and feel very optimistic about growing this program established
by Barrington Junior Women's Club,” Melanie Trejo said. “It was an
excellent week of learning and fun with campers and volunteers
working together.” Neena Masterson, BJWC Committee Co-
Chair, added "We streamlined the curriculum and made each day
interactive, so everyone got the most from this opportunity. After
months of planning, it was so gratifying to see the smiles on the kids'
faces!"

Spa walk-a-thon raised $4,600 for Alliance for the Great
Lakes. The Alliance involves tens of thousands of people
each year in advocacy, volunteering, education, and research
to ensure the lakes are healthy and safe for now and the
future. The salon accepted pledges from clients for a 5K
walk through Cuba Marsh.
Since 1992, Ben E Salon Spa has walked for Earth Month
raising money for various organizations. The Alliance for
the Great Lakes has been the recipient for the past several
years. As a Lifestyle Salon for Aveda Corporation, they join
other Aveda Salons in the Midwest raising money for Earth
conscious organizations. “We are proud to participate in
caring for our Great Lakes and send a big thank-you to all
the guests who supported our efforts,” Ben E Salon owner
