A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

WELCOME TO
FRIDAY IRISH FISH FRY SATURDAY FUN FOR ALL
Kick off St Patrick’s Week!
2. Welcome to
Carroll’s 4th Annual St. Pat’s Fest!
This event, now in its fourth year, is a wonderful example of how the
Carroll community comes together for the good of our beloved school.
Specifically, three fundraising arms: the Alumni Association, Patriot
Parent Club and Carrolleers have collaborated to bring you this special
event. The proceeds generated from the festival will impact all aspects of
the Carroll community – academics, athletics, the arts, and alumni. St.
Pat’s Fest proceeds from the past three years went towards a new cooling
system in the main gymnasium, renovation of our Collaborative Learning
Center (formerly the library) in addition to student scholarships and
music program needs.
We believe that our festival truly has something for everyone. Friday’s
traditional fish fry will give alumni, parents, and friends a chance to catch
up with old friends, enjoy Irish music and enjoy delicious food and drink.
On Saturday, we welcome families during the day to enjoy games and
activities for people of all ages with entertainment from Carroll students
and local Irish Dance companies. Saturday night, after Mass, we’re in for
a special treat as the popular Band 5 performs in the aux gym, and the
Irish band, Bloody Tinth, takes the stage for some extraordinary music.
We thank you for coming to visit us this weekend and we hope you have a
wonderful time.
I am truly grateful to the entire Carroll community, especially those
parents, alumni, staff, and students who make this event such a huge
success. It is volunteers like them who work so hard for the greater good
that make Carroll such a special place.
It’s good to be Irish and it’s a great day to be a Patriot!
